Please use this list to ensure that you have provided the design agency with as much information as possible
to enable them to hand over “fit for purpose” packaging designs into the LRS Artwork & Repro Process.
Supply a full list of material types that will be changing as part of the project
i.e. Shrink sleeves, Shrink wraps, Cans, Tetras, Paper labels, Closures, Trays, Cartons, etc.
This is important as each material type has a different print process which may require
considerable consideration during the design process. This would be relevant when designing a
can versus a shrink sleeve for example.
Inform the Design Agency of any dual printers that may be used to ensure they are aware of the
implication on the design. There may be colour restrictions and different processes involved
from one printer to another.
Inform the Design Agency of any colour limitations that may apply to the design based on
cost/contractual agreement.
Ensure the Design Agency has a copy of the “Design Considerations” document, the
“Packaging Layout Guidelines” document and also any printer specific information necessary
to support them during the design phase.
Where possible ensure the Design Agency has a copy of the latest cutter profiles/keylines.
Provide the Design Agency with any base artwork available as a reference tool.
Confirm which master designs the agency will be designing versus the range of materials that
Schawk will apply these designs to.
Provide the Design Agency with any regulatory, legal and commercial considerations to be
taken into account during the design phase.
Include any fruit content guidelines or instruction from the Regulatory team.
Ensure any health/functional claims to be included in the brief have been checked by the
Regulatory team.
Provide key project milestone timings as part of the brief.
Contact the artwork team if you have any additional questions you need answering to support
your brief to the Design Agency.

A design must be capable of displaying minimum mandatory information for FIC compliance.
Mandatory information is displayed on the Pack Copy Document (PCD). All mandatory text
should be 1.2mm (measured using a lower case ‘x’ height).
Legibility should be optimised such that information can be easily read.
Identify space available on artwork for creative design vs space reserved for mandatory /
regulatory information. On PCD mandatory information to which a minimum font size must be
applied is flagged with a red diamond. Designs must incorporate this information.
When designing a packaging component, it is advisable to have a product sample to hand to
help visualise how the design may look, and also understand any panel orientations or
substrate joins.
It is good practise for Design file templates to be based on the smallest component size in a
range, but have imagery which can be scaled to the biggest required size. (N.B. All images
should be hi-res & never scaled up more than 130%).
Cans are one of the most complex printed components and should be made a priority when
part of a design project.
Be mindful of any future promotional or price flash activity which may have to be
incorporated into the designs.
Graphics should not inhibit reading of information. Legibility considerations must be included
as part of the design.
Consider the portfolio of materials changing.
Contact LRS for confirmation if required (Jazz.Tung@lrsuntory.com)
Any logos or graphics that require a minimum legal size (e.g. weight declarations, recycle
logos etc.) must be set correctly on the design file.
PRE-ARTWORK MEETINGS
A PDF of all design files (on the relevant cutter profile) is required in advance of the
pre-artwork meeting. This is to be supplied to the artwork team who will distribute it to all
relevant stakeholders.
This PDF must:
• Show the positioning of all required graphical & text elements for the design.
• Clearly indicate what colours are intended to be used on the design.
• Be easy to interpret. Annotations can help elaborate on certain aspects of the design intent which
may not necessarily be obvious, and help aid the review process (e.g. Gloss varnish to be applied over
main logo only, background to be clear film etc.)
On completion of the design stage, a proof showing colour intent must be signed off by LRS and
supplied to Schawk as an initial colour target.

• Clear windows / product show through areas should be clearly marked as such on the design files.
• Graphics which need to keep their shape (e.g. faces, circles etc.) should be avoided in the high
distortion areas indicated on the cutter profiles.
• A lacquer is often required for shrink sleeves. This should be identified on the cutter profile legend
and takes up one of the available colour stations.
• Some designs require 2 whites e.g. Lucozade Sport.
• As of April 2015, non-barcoded & barcoded sleeves are to share common printing cylinders where possible.

• Due to the nature of the print process tints of colours below 2% are not allowed.
• Due to the ink pigment on the sleeve being stretched over the bottle it can lead to a lighter
appearance unless colours are backed up.
• Clear windows / product show through areas should be clearly marked as such on the design
files.
• Graphics which need to keep their shape (e.g. faces, circles etc.) should be avoided in the high
distortion areas indicated on the cutter profiles.
• CCL designs cannot have promo bands running around the top of the bottle.
(e.g. Limited Edition, Price Marks, Not for Individual Resale banners etc.).
When required they should be separated into individual blocks for each face of the bottle.
• As of April 2015, non-barcoded & barcoded sleeves are to share common printing plates where possible.

• Sometimes to achieve a good print result certain colours may be split Line & Tone
(e.g. Red Line, Red Tone). This effectively takes up one of the available colour stations.
• Due to the nature of the print process tints of colours below 3% are not allowed.
• Due to the amount of distortion that occurs whilst wrapping around the bottles, always keep to
the optimum areas identified on the cutter profiles. Also note the bottles underneath are
normally slightly visible though the shrinkwrap.
• Sometimes to achieve a good print result certain colours may be split Line & Tone
(e.g. Red Line, Red Tone). This effectively takes up another one of the available colour stations.
• Due to the nature of the print process tints of colours below 3% are not allowed.
• Barcode areas are normally fixed and placed in the optimum area for scanability.
• Always keep to the optimum areas identified on the cutter profiles for text, banners, logos etc.
Any elements which fall outside these areas will be subject to a great deal of distortion due to
the shrinkage that occurs when wrapping around the bottles.
(Text especially should always be kept away from the corners of the wrap).
• Also note that the bottles underneath are normally slightly visible through the shrinkwrap.

CONSIDERATIONS
• Be careful about the use of colour gradients / vignettes, as due to the limitations in the print
process, the desired result may not be achievable.
• Matching of colours from different substrates is difficult. Pantone references which are printed
on white paper are misleading.
• Sans Serif type faces should be used for both positive and negative text.
• Wet on wet print process so no overlapping colours – always liaise with printer.
• Due to printing technique some colour plates may need to be split into two plates in order to
ensure proper quality, therefore reducing the number of colour stations available.
• Barcodes should run in ladder format on the can.
• It is advised to factor in print proofing as part of the design stage time-line in order to manage
expectations of the final printed result.
• Steel is visually darker than aluminium, so printer colour guides will be substrate specific.
• If a design is to appear on both steel and aluminium cans, it is advisable to use a solid white
base coat in order to achieve the best possible colour match between the two substrates.
Metallic show-through is not possible when white base coats are being applied.
• White base coats are not a brilliant white.

• Sometimes to achieve a good print result certain colours may be split Line & Tone
(e.g. Red Line, Red Tone). This effectively takes up another one of the available colour stations.
• Elements must be kept away from creases and folds by a minimum of 2mm.
• Always ensure crimp areas are left text free.

• By keeping designs in a range consistent, it can allow the printer to use common printing plates.
• Always ensure crimp areas are left text free.
• Always design the set of labels required for an individual bottle as a suite, and not in isolation.
• Barcode should run in ladder format on label.
• Elements must be kept away from creases and folds by a minimum or 2mm.
• It is worth noting that the board substrate often used is more of an off-white, which can
therefore slightly change the appearance of colours printing onto it.
• A 3% dot on file results in a 13% dot final printed result.

• It is worth noting that the board substrate often used is more of an off-white, which can
therefore slightly change the appearance of colours printing onto it.
• Images don't always reproduce well and should be avoided. Linework designs tend to work best.
• Elements must be kept away from creases and folds by a minimum or 5mm.
• Ensure the colour of the tray is known (i.e. white or brown), before commencing design work.
• Allow space for ITF barcodes and human readable digits.
• It is worth noting that the board substrate often used is more of an off-white, which can
therefore slightly change the appearance of colours printing onto it.

PRE-ARTWORK MEETINGS A PDF of all design files (on the relevant cutter profile) is required in advance of the pre-artwork meeting. This is to be supplied to the artwork team who will distribute it to all relevant stakeholders. Annotations can help elaborate on certain aspects of the design intent which may not necessarily be obvious, and help aid the review process (e.g. Gloss varnish to be applied over main logo only, background to be clear film etc.) On completion of the design stage, a proof showing colour intent must be signed off by LRS and supplied to Schawk as an initial colour target. LINE THICKNESS / STROKE WEIGHT • Clear windows / product show through areas should be clearly marked as such on the design files. • Graphics which need to keep their shape (e.g. faces, circles etc.) should be avoided in the high distortion areas indicated on the cutter profiles. • A lacquer is often required for shrink sleeves. This should be identified on the cutter profile legend and takes up one of the available colour stations. • Some designs require 2 whites e.g. Lucozade Sport. • As of April 2015, non-barcoded & barcoded sleeves are to share common printing cylinders where possible. 9 4pt (Positive) 6pt (Reverse) 0.2mm (Reverse)6 weeks • Due to the nature of the print process tints of colours below 2% are not allowed. • Due to the ink pigment on the sleeve being stretched over the bottle it can lead to a lighter appearance unless colours are backed up. • Clear windows / product show through areas should be clearly marked as such on the design files. • Graphics which need to keep their shape (e.g. faces, circles etc.) should be avoided in the high distortion areas indicated on the cutter profiles. • CCL designs cannot have promo bands running around the top of the bottle. DATE: 30th June 2015 VERSION: 1 5D E S I G N C O N S I D E R A T I O N S PRINTER KEY CONSIDERATIONS • Be careful about the use of colour gradients / vignettes, as due to the limitations in the print process, the desired result may not be achievable. • Matching of colours from different substrates is difficult. Pantone references which are printed on white paper are misleading. • Sans Serif type faces should be used for both positive and negative text. • Wet on wet print process so no overlapping colours – always liaise with printer. • Due to printing technique some colour plates may need to be split into two plates in order to ensure proper quality, therefore reducing the number of colour stations available. • Barcodes should run in ladder format on the can. • It is advised to factor in print proofing as part of the design stage time-line in order to manage expectations of the final printed result. • Steel is visually darker than aluminium, so printer colour guides will be substrate specific. • If a design is to appear on both steel and aluminium cans, it is advisable to use a solid white base coat in order to achieve the best possible colour match between the two substrates. Metallic show-through is not possible when white base coats are being applied. • White base coats are not a brilliant white. 6 • Sometimes to achieve a good print result certain colours may be split Line & Tone (e.g. Red Line, Red Tone). This effectively takes up another one of the available colour stations. • Elements must be kept away from creases and folds by a minimum of 2mm. • Always ensure crimp areas are left text free. 5pt (Positive) 6pt (Reverse) NO.
