Lord Capulet JinJin Xu head of the Capulet family
What sort of person is the character at the beginning of the play? What are they like at the end? He seemed to be aggressive during the fight in the first scene. His quote, “What noise is this? Give me my long sword, ho!” proves this. He was eager to fight despite his age and authority and the apparent need for a “crutch” as lady Capulet suggested. Lord Capulet disapproved of Paris’s wish to marry Juliet because he thinks she is too young. However, he urges Paris to woo Juliet because her consent if more important than his. Beginning of play End of play He promised Paris that he would marry Juliet in three days in Act 3 without asking for her consent first. He supported the marriage because he believed that it would make Juliet less sad about Tybalt’s death. Although he is still the loving father he was before, he changed and did not care about Juliet’s feelings and her consent towards the marriage. He is still aggressive as he screams at Juliet, threatening about disowning her. He is less eager to fight with the Montagues after the Prince issued a warning about fights between the two houses. He convinced Tybalt not to go after Romeo when he saw him at the party.
What was the moral low point, and the moral high point for this character? He reacted calmly when Tybalt pointed out Romeo at his party and he managed to convince him not to attack Romeo and ordered him to stop acting childish. In Act 1: He cared for Juliet and did not want to agree to her marriage with Paris without her consent Moral High Point Moral Low point After finding out Juliet’s refusal to marry Paris, he flew into a rage and called her “a disobedient wrench”. He started threatening his own daughter about disowning her, and threatening to hit her. Later, he continues the wedding preparations even after knowing her objection.
To what degree was the character responsible for this tragedy? He is directly related to the tragic outcome of events as he is the one to force Juliet to marry Paris instead of Romeo. And of course, Lord Capulet has a deep hatred for the house of Capulet and would probably never approve of Juliet and Romeo’s relationship.
What should this character have done differently? He should not have taken matters into his own hands- feeling as if he had the solution to Juliet’s tears by forcing Juliet to marry Paris.
How would this character dress? What general style of clothing would suit? What color(s) would best represent the character, and why? Select one hand prop (e.g. sword, wine goblet, piece of jewelry) which you would have this character use often, or be associated with, in a production of the play. Explain why this object suits your character. Select one hand prop (e.g. sword, wine goblet, piece of jewelry) which you would have this character use often, or be associated with, in a production of the play. Explain why this object suits your character. As he is the head of the house of this fairly large and rich family, he would dress fancily and luxuriously. I think he would wear red to represent his aggressive personality. A fancy sword to show his aggressive personality, but too fancy to actually use properly because he is old and can not fight properly.
