Looks vs. PersonalityBy Jordan, Nishil, Ashley, Soomin, and Brandon
What is Looks Vs. Personality? Are you attracted to looks or personality? Some people judge others on appearance, others only look for personality. Some people focus on their overall appearance rather than their personality; others don’t care how they look. Who values looks? How important are looks or personality in society?
LooksFirst impressions are important because they are the basic idea that a person forms about another and it determines whether a person decides to pursue any type of relationship with anyone. People tend to form impressions of each other quickly by using minimal information, such as the sex of the person, appearance, or a brief encounter to draw conclusions about each other; these types of factors can lead people to form remarkably detailed impressions. The observation that a person is wearing conservative clothes, such as a suit and tie, for example, may lead to the interpretation of a variety of other characteristics, such as being conservative politically, or having a conservative job, such as a business man.
Importance of looks in societyThere was an attractive young lady who was going to leave the studio and go out on the street to ask for enough money to make a phone call. However, they dressed her like a homeless street person in dingy, worn out clothes with a floppy hat. Then, they sent her out on the street. She approached people as nice and pleasant as she could because she believed that people didn't judge you by your appearance and thought they would respond kindly to her. They most certainly did not. Most of the people she encountered were down right rude. She would approach them with a smile and say, "Excuse me, could you spare enough change for a phone call?" Some even pushed her out of their way. They would hold up their hands and wouldn't even hear what she had to say. One man even told her to get out of the way. By the time the lady gave up, she was in tears. She honestly believed that people didn't judge you by your appearance and she was overwhelmed at the responses she had gotten. Later, she came out dressed real nice and went back to the street. What a difference! They smiled immediately as she approached and listened attentively to her request. Not one person hesitated to help her. Some offered her the use of their cell phone.
Judging looksPhysical attractiveness is difficult because it is hard to avoid forming impressions of people based on their appearance. One reason is the stereotype that a person who is physically attractive has other positive qualities as well.Students rated a lecture by a female teacher more interesting and judged the woman to be a better teacher when she was made up to look more attractive, rather than plain
looksResearch has found that mothers of more attractive infants tend to show them more affection and play with them more than mothers of unattractive infantsAttractive children are more likely to be treated leniently by teachersAttractive adults are generally judged to be more productive by their employees
Judging looksMany tall and average-sized people think that people who aren't quite as tall as them are somehow "inferior" to them. Short and tall people don't "earn" their height. this is a problem that is usually common in men; after all, many girls like to date the tall guys, so the short guys are automatically taken out of the dating pool for no good reasonPeople are also judged by their weight. Even though a significant portion of the world is overweight, society seems to believe that it is okay to discriminate against obese people. Fat jokes are one thing; sometimes, though, someone will not want to associate with someone who's overweight. Just as it makes no sense to judge someone by his or her height, it doesn't make sense to judge someone by his or her weight. You don't know that the person is too lazy to exercise; maybe it's a genetic thing. And your weight has nothing to do with your personality, so you really can't judge an overweight person until he or she actually talks to you; however, the damage done seems to be irreversible, and obese people may never get a fair shake in this world.
looksMostly girls are aware of their looks, they want to wear the right make up and have the right clothes, some people try to dress good because they think it gets them more respect. Men are also aware of their appearance, for they wear suits and ties to look sharp, also wear cologne to smell good for the ladies.Three jobs that might require good looks modeling, cosmetology, acting.
Top reasons why appearance is importantTo impress people. To look one’s best in work place, where one deals with the public. For example, film stars have to look gorgeous and handsome. It makes you feel good. (One feels good if one looks good).A physically attractive person attracts lots of people. It helps in building up relationships. A handsome boy attracts a lot of girls. Similarly, even girls, who are beautiful, are much sought after.Physical appearance does matter in a relationship. In a marriage, the partners need to take care of themselves physically in order to sustain their relationship. Many women face marital problems as they go out of shape after having children. Those women who take care of their physical appearance have better relationship with their partner. It boosts self-confidence and self-esteem. One feels very reassured when other people admire them and prefer to associate with them as they find them very attractive. In certain professions looks make a lot of difference. A model has to look his or best. A good looking salesperson can get noticed quickly.A pleasing face is nice to look at. People like to relax in the presence of beautiful things. A pleasant face can relax the mind. Those with an aesthetic sense like to admire beautiful people and things. An attractive physical appearance enhances personality. It is an added advantage. A physically attractive person, who is well-groomed, can impress upon people. A handsome politician can draw the attention of the masses, although, of course, he also has to be man of importance. For example, former president John F. Kennedy was known for his looks, although he was an astute politician as well. Looks enhanced his public image.
ExperimentWe did a survey on looks vs. personality. We asked 34 students to complete the survey honestly, which characteristics or traits in the opposite sex would they prefer.
Statistics
results from experiment(results) (may need two statistical graphs)
Ethical considerationsWe should of split the scores of all the classmen instead of combining it into one.We also should of split the results up among gender.

Editor's Notes

  • #3 This slide might need editing? I didn’t orriginally plan to put this slide here, it was on my outline presentation. but these questions kinda introduce our presentation so that the audience has a better understanding of what our presentation is about.(this slide I guess is good but it could be better, you think?)
  • #4 http://clearinghouse.missouriwestern.edu/manuscripts/197.phpIdk if this is a good example or not? In the end of the paragraph: “For example, if someone observes a classmate helping an elderly person across the street, he or she concludes that the classmate is thoughtful and helpful.“ kinda judges someone on personality, not on looks.
  • #5 http://www.helium.com/items/954676-importance-of-appearance-in-societyI thought this was good
  • #6 http://clearinghouse.missouriwestern.edu/manuscripts/197.phpMight want to move this slide somewhere else?
  • #7 Found this from the book chapter 15 section 1
  • #8 And maybe move this slide too..plus Edit. Doesn’t really follow with the presentation. We need to make it sound like its in our own voice. Notwat all I did and copy-pasted it from a good rich in information random site.http://www.helium.com/items/1407018-how-people-judge-you-by-your-appearance
  • #9 (Who (or how many) values looks more than personality?) (what kind of job can u get with looks?) (what happens when you are too ugly or too beautiful?)We should add to this? Who else values appearance?I found this quote from a website and I forgot the website sooidk what is the source of this information: “Mostly girls are aware of their looks, they want to wear the right make up and have the right clothes, some people try to dress good because they think it gets them more respect.”
  • #10 http://www.paggu.com/getting-into-roots/top-10-reasons-why-physical-appearance-is-so-important/
  • #11 Should say something about our experiment obviously, wat did we do? Our maybe just what did jordan do: “we gave surveys to everyone which …”
  • #12 Just the explaining of personality..
  • #13 :P
  • #14 Instead of “ethical considerations” maybe we should just call it “drawbacks of the survey”
  • #15 Got this slide completed.. If you all thinksoo? (easiest slide everrrrr)
  • #16 Should we have this slide? Btw, whole presentation must be about 10-15 minutes long obviously. Its either we have very time consuming slides and talk really slow or something or just a lot of information going along with a lot of slides. Lots of visuals are awesomee.
