In 1750, two families in Bohemia, the Ciperas and the Dedics, were forced into servitude to the local Lord of the Manor. After years of struggling, the townspeople rebelled against the Lord and Queen Maria Theresa. When the rebellion was put down, one family's son was taken and forced to work in factories. Facing uncertainty and conflict, the families heard about free farmland being offered in America and decided to emigrate, making the long difficult journey by ship. They eventually found land in America where they could build a home and settle.

The first wave of Englishmen reached Virginia at Cape Henry, the southern headland at the opening of
Chesapeake Bay, on April 26, 1607. The same day their troubles began. The Indians of the Cape Henry
region . . . when they found a party of twenty or thirty strangers walking about on their territory, drove them
back to the ships they came on. It was not the last Indian victory, but it was no more effective than later ones.
In spite of troubles, the English were there to stay. They spent until May 14 exploring Virginia's broad waters
and then chose a site that fitted the formula Hakluyt had prescribed. The place which they named Jamestown,
on the James (formerly Powhatan) River, was inland from the capes about sixty miles, ample distance for
warning of a Spanish invasion by sea. It was situated on a peninsula, making it easily defensible by land; and
the river was navigable by oceangoing ships for another seventy-five miles into the interior, thus giving
access to other tribes in case the local Indians should prove as unfriendly as the Chesapeakes.
Captain Christopher Newport had landed the settlers in time to plant something for a harvest that year if they put
their minds to it. After a week, in which they built a fort for protection, Newport and twenty-one others took a
small boat and headed up the river on a diplomatic and reconnoitering mission, while the settlers behind set
about the crucial business of planting corn. Newport paused at various Indian villages along the way and assured
the people, as best he could, of the friendship of the English and of his readiness to assist them against their
enemies. Newport gathered correctly from his attempted conversations that one man, Powhatan, ruled the whole
area above Jamestown, as far as the falls at the present site of Richmond. . . .
Skip over the first couple of years, when it was easy for Englishmen to make mistakes in the strange new
world to which they had come, and look at Jamestown in the winter of 1609-10. It is three planting seasons
since the colony began. The settlers have fallen into an uneasy truce with the Indians, punctuated by guerrilla
raids on both sides, but they have had plenty of time in which they could have grown crops. They have
obtained corn from the Indians and supplies from England. They have firearms. Game abounds in the woods;
and Virginia's rivers are filled with sturgeon in the summer and covered with geese and ducks in the winter.
There are five hundred people in the colony now. And they are starving. They scour the woods listlessly for
nuts, roots, and berries. And they offer the only authentic examples of cannibalism witnessed in Virginia. One
provident man chops up his wife and salts down the pieces. Others dig up graves to eat the corpses. By spring
only sixty are left alive.

1. After the mass arrests, relatives tried to secure some measure of "justice", but seeking "justice" in this system was in and of itself a crime. And so they did what they could — they kept vigil at the prison walls, went to the NKVD offices, and in their naiveté, even went so far as to write to Stalin himself, asking him to help them in finding and freeing their relatives. But in ninety nine out of a hundred cases, the response was that those arrested had been sentenced as "enemies of the people" and sent to far-off camps, "without the right to correspond". Some 10 thousand of these "enemies of the people," sent off to far-away camps, "without the right to correspond," were found, with their hands bound behind their backs and their skulls crushed, in the mass graves of Vinnytsia.
2. Out of the 169 female corpses that were exhumed, 49 were completely nude. According to the report of the medical commission, these were all women of young age, as were the majority of female corpses that were clad only in long shirts. This suggested, and was later borne out in testimony, that these women had been raped prior to being executed. Only the corpses of a few older women were found fully clothed. There were only a few cases where the female corpses were found with their hands bound.
3. All of the exhumed corpses showed signs of having been shot, most of them in the back of the head. The cause of death could not be determined only in those few cases where the corpse was damaged in the process of being exhumed. In most of the cases, bullets were found still embedded in the skulls. Many bore signs indicating that more than one bullet had been used: 6,360 victims were shot twice; 78 victims were shot three times; and two victims were shot four times; the remainder were either shot once, or the number of shots could not be determined. Some of the skulls were either bashed in or showed signs of having received severe blows, most likely, with a pistol. Some of the corpses had been shot in the forehead or in the temple.
4. As for the place of execution, the reports of the commission concurred with the accounts given by witnesses that, except for a very few, the victims were not executed at the site of the burial. This was confirmed by the absence of cartridges at the sites. The fact that few cartridges were found, and that only a few corpses were found on top of piles of clothing beneath which lay hundreds of corpses, indicates that only a few victims were executed directly at the burial spot.
5. The Nazi crimes have been investigated and documented by the Nuremberg Trials. Some of the countless crimes perpetrated by the Communist regime under Stalin's dictatorship were condemned by his own "advisers" and henchmen after his death.

She was a strange ship, indeed, by all accounts, a frightening ship, a ship of mystery.
Whether she was trader, privateer, or man-of-war no one knows. Through her
bulwarks black-mouthed cannon yawned. The flag she flew was Dutch; her crew a
motley. Her port of call, an English settlement, Jamestown, in the colony of Virginia.
She came, she traded, and shortly afterwards was gone. Probably no ship in modern
history has carried a more portentous freight. Her cargo? Twenty slaves.
There is not a country in world history in which racism has been more important, for so long a
time, as the United States. And the problem of "the color line," as W. E. B. Du Bois put it, is still
with us. So it is more than a purely historical question to ask: How does it start?—and an even
more urgent question: How might it end? Or, to put it differently: Is it possible for whites and
blacks to live together without hatred?
If history can help answer these questions, then the beginnings of slavery in North America—
a continent where we can trace the coming of the first whites and the first blacks—might supply
at least a few clues.
Some historians think those first blacks in Virginia were considered as servants, like the white
indentured servants brought from Europe. But the strong probability is that, even if they were
listed as "servants" (a more familiar category to the English), they were viewed as being different
from white servants, were treated differently, and in fact were slaves. In any case, slavery
developed quickly into a regular institution, into the normal labor relation of blacks to whites in
the New World. With it developed that special racial feeling—whether hatred, or contempt, or
pity, or patronization—that accompanied the inferior position of blacks in America for the next
350 years —that combination of inferior status and derogatory thought we call racism.
Everything in the experience of the first white settlers acted as a pressure for the enslavement
of blacks.
The Virginians of 1619 were desperate for labor, to grow enough food to stay alive. Among
them were survivors from the winter of 1609-1610, the "starving time," when, crazed for want of
food, they roamed the woods for nuts and berries, dug up graves to eat the corpses, and died in
batches until five hundred colonists were reduced to sixty.
In the Journals of the House of Burgesses of Virginia is a document of 1619 which tells of
the first twelve years of the Jamestown colony. The first settlement had a hundred persons, who
had one small ladle of barley per meal. When more people arrived, there was even less food.

- 1. Rose and Augustine Cipera, and Josephine and Benjamin Dedic are forced to enslave themselves to the Lord of the Manor in 1750 Bohemia. After years of struggling on their small plot of poor land to survive, the two families along with thousands of other towns people, rebel against the authoritative Lord of the Manor and their Queen, Maria Theresa, in the town square of Ceske Budajovice. It soon becomes an all out revolt as the towns people fight for basic necessities to survive. Two of Rose and Augustine, and Josephine and Benjamins children get married. Their neighbors are horrified as army men come and kidnap their young son, Joshua, declaring them unfit parents, sending Joshua to work in their woolen factories and spinning mills. Emotionally crushed, Pavel and Karolina are forced to accept the absence of their young son, as Queen Maria Theresa sends twenty- thousand troops to regain control of the town and the people. Reigning from Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria the fair minded Queen Maria Theresa has her own problems dealing with Catherine the Great of Russia, Fredrick the Great of Prussia, and her daughter Marie Antoinette, Queen of France. As the powerful French people rise up against their own leaders for better living conditions and basic necessities, they become even more and more powerful, creating fear and wars among the reigning Royalties of all the countries in Europe. Bohemia is invaded again and again as Pavel and Joseph discuss in deep thoughts, the problems each men face with being forced in and out of servitude and their own families and children's survival. Joshua returns to Ceske Budajovice as a member of the Queens notorious army. Karolina sees him, and is stricken with emotion and collapses to the ground. Members of European Royalty are at their wits end, trying to stop the powerful French people from invading and claiming all of their lands and holdings and decide to hold a mutli-nation congress, called the Congress of Vienna. With dignitaries and Royalty from every sitting Monarchy and union the delegations debate ways to try to end the fighting and bloodshed. Redesigning boundaries and dividing nations in the process. With uncertainty and mayhem everywhere Frantisek and Anna, and Pavel and Karoline and their neighbors hear about a foreign land, America, that is giving away free farmland to anyone who is willing to farm it. They discuss the painful decision to leave their beloved Bohemia for the unknown and uncertainty of journeying to a new land. But the group finally decides they will be better off to leave, walking for days on end to meet the train that will take them to the ship that will cross the ocean and take them there. Storms ravage the ship and its passengers on the voyage, but the three families, and other passengers make it safely to New York harbor. With the long ocean voyage behind them, trying to find a place to settle becomes an even more daunting task, but the adventurers eventually find a place to build a shelter and finally call home.
