Vietnamese businesses have been established in the UK since the 1970s, concentrating in sectors like nail salons, restaurants, and mini-markets. A study identified nearly 300 Vietnamese businesses in London, though the total is estimated closer to 1,000 when including informal sole proprietorships. Most were started in the last 5 years and are micro-enterprises with under 5 employees. These businesses face challenges with limited English skills, lack of alternative financing options to family/friends, and low IT/regulatory knowledge. Support is needed particularly for restaurants and nail salons through translated guidance and training programs to help businesses address licensing requirements, health and safety, and move into new sectors as competition increases.
