Five music students from Black Hills State University (BHSU) competed in state-wide music competitions held at Augustana College. At the Music Teachers National Association competition, Ashton VandenHoek received an honorable mention, while Tyler Raad placed second and Jamie Williams received an honorable mention at the South Dakota Music Teachers Association competition. Jessica Finch also received an honorable mention in the collegiate piano division. BHSU's music department head Dr. Roberts said she was proud of the large representation from their small department, and Raad noted that the preparation and assistance from the BHSU music faculty helped him feel well prepared and able to succeed in the competition.

Roxy Coss is a jazz saxophonist from Seattle, Washington who has had success both in college and New York City. She began playing saxophone at age 9 and was the first tenor saxophone chair in her high school's acclaimed jazz band. Coss earned a full scholarship to study jazz in New Jersey, where she graduated magna cum laude. After college, she moved to New York City and performed with several prestigious jazz groups. Currently, Coss leads her own ensembles and performs regularly in New York City jazz clubs. She is praised for her talents and for standing out among other gifted young jazz musicians in New York City.

Amul was formed in 1946 as a cooperative in Anand, Gujarat in response to exploitation of milk producers by traders. It is now the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which procures milk from 18,536 village cooperatives involving 3.37 million milk producers. GCMMF markets dairy products under the Amul brand and has annual revenue of $3.4 billion, making it one of the largest food companies in India. The cooperative model has empowered farmers and helped establish India as the world's largest producer and consumer of milk and dairy products.
