Michael D. Pawlovich, Ph.D., P.E.
“Analyzing traffic safety-related data serves my passion of providing a safer roadway for all travelers, be they
commuters, commercial drivers, families, motorcyclists, pedestrians, or whomever. Teasing out new insights,
generating unique analytical reports, and enhancing access to data and results have been my primary foci. To serve
my diverse customers, I continually strive to explore innovative methods of data analyses and combinations,
whether using existent databases or via newly developed databases.”
Dr. Pawlovich has more than 20 years of progressive traffic safety, transportation engineering, crash data, data
analysis, and research experience, including 15 years with the Iowa Department of Transportation Office of Traffic
and Safety (TAS). During this time he has served customers ranging from individual citizens, students, media,
legal, and local, state, and national colleagues, including public, consulting, and research. His experience includes:
- analysis of crash data,
- safety-related analyses,
- combining crash data with other data sets (e.g., road, traffic, pavement, bridge, etc.),
- database development (e.g., intersection, interchange, curve, safety features),
- utilization of Geographic Information Systems (GIS),
- development of analysis tools (GIS-based and SAS-based),
- research project management,
- statistical research,
- Bayesian statistical applications,
- Crash Modification Factor (CMF) development,
- Safety Performance Function (SPF) development,
- national study/panel participation,
- website development, and
- data visualization.
Throughout his career, his experience has morphed from doing to directing to teaching and enabling the next
generation. His principal foci are in the areas of traffic safety, statistical analysis, database development and
dissemination, automation, visualization, and GIS applications.
During his career, Dr. Pawlovich has served as Project Monitor (PM) involved in grant activities in excess of $2.8
million include funds from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA), the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT), and the Iowa Governor’s Traffic
Safety Bureau (GTSB). This research has led to the publication of 10 peer-reviewed journal articles and 8 technical
reports. He has served on several national study panels and maintains involvement with numerous Transportation
Research Board (TRB) committees, including membership on the Statistical Methods (ABJ80) committee.
Additionally, Dr. Pawlovich has taught the senior-level Highway Design course at Iowa State University the past
two spring semesters. This experience has re-familiarized him with and renewed his interest in the topics covered,
including but not limited to the planning and design process, horizontal and vertical alignment, highway capacity
analysis, pavement design, and work zone design, and piqued interest into future analyses regarding these features
and their impact on traffic safety. His teaching portfolio includes undergraduate courses in transportation
engineering, as well as guest lectures for graduate-level traffic safety, traffic engineering, and system safety courses
and training courses related to safety and safety analysis software.
Though primarily focused on traffic safety the past couple decades, Dr. Pawlovich continues to be extremely open to
alternative employment opportunities for his curious mind to explore. He is willing to entertain risk, especially in an
encouraging, supportive environment. He remains interested in data applications, whether analyses or visualization,
but is primarily oriented towards solving problems and improving the world (or at least a small corner) using his
unique skillset. As illustrated by his teaching experience as well as his history with TAS student interns, he remains
also interested in teaching and sharing his knowledge.
If interested in discussing possibilities, please review the attached VITA/resume, the Iowa DOT position description,
and the skill/endorsement list. If you remain interested, please contact him to begin a dialogue.
In his personal life, Michael has an unending passion for his family and all that engenders. His several children,
ranging from teenagers to toddlers, are a continual source of joy and discovery in his life. They frequently engage
him in activities including sports (soccer, running, taekwondo), arts (music, drawing, books), games (board, card,
electronic), and miscellaneous other (horses, rabbit hopping) too numerous to list. He and his family share their
nearly 130-year-old home with numerous pets. Due to the age of the home and a growing family, Michael has spent
many hours learning and applying construction skills to the maintenance and upgrading of this structure…including
electrical, plumbing (copper, PVC, and gas), carpentry and finish work, window replacement, cabinetry, and many
other. Finally, Michael lives his faith both through family and friends and by a couple decades of active
participation with the youth ministry of his local parish.
