Hollywood celebrity vs. The Sun
newspaper
On the 12th of May 2005, Ms Diaz, 32, sued News Group Newspapers, publishers of
The Sun, over a story they published. Ms. Diaz suffered "distress", her lawyer, Simon
Smith has said.
Reason behind the filed case:
The article in The Sun claimed and
published:
"Justin Timberlake's bride-to-be Cameron
Diaz has been caught snogging a married
man.“
The man was reported to be her MTV
Charlie's Angels star Diaz has dated
colleague Shane Nickerson.
singer Justin Timberlake since 2003.
'Caught out'
 "It was explained to the newsreaders that he was a married man, married to a
high school teacher and that he was also the father of a one-year-old," Ms.
Diaz's lawyer Simon Smith told the High Court in London.
Readers were informed, said Mr Smith that, "they have enjoyed more than just a
professional relationship".
The article went on to say the actress had been caught out "while her pop star
fiancé prepared to go into hospital for a throat operation".
However, The Sun has since accepted that "the relevant incident involved no more
than Ms Diaz giving a friend a goodbye hug".
Ms Diaz has been dating Justin Timberlake for more than two years.
"The publication of these allegations has caused damage to the claimant's
personal and professional reputation, in addition to obvious distress to both
herself, Mr Timberlake, Mr Nickerson and his wife," said Mr Smith.
 Following an investigation, The Sun has admitted "any suggestion of a
romantic involvement is entirely untrue and without any substance whatsoever".
 March 5, 2007. The National Enquirer has settled a libel case with actress
Cameron Diaz, a case that reminds American media organizations that the
United Kingdom’s more lenient libel laws still pose a threat, despite a recent
ruling protecting stories in the “public Interest.”
 Actress Cameron Diaz has accepted "substantial" libel damages over a UK
newspaper story which alleged she was having an affair with a married
man.
The case stemmed from a complaint filed by Diaz in 2005 when the
magazine published an article and photos alleging an affair between
Diaz and a married producer from her MTV show “Trippin’.”
According to a press release, the original article was published in the U.S.
version of the Enquirer and had only “limited Internet distribution” in
Britain– with only 279 hits from U.K. addresses– before it was removed
from the Enquirer’s website. The article and photos were not included in
published editions of the magazine in Britain.
London attorney Niri Shan, who represents the Enquirer's U.K. publisher,
said this case is part of a worrying trend that endangers the rights of
companies that publish in both the United States and the United
Kingdom.
 "I believe to allow celebrities to bring claims where publication in the U.K.
is so incidental to the U.S. publication it is an abuse of the U.K. court
system," he said in a statement. "Further, it has resulted in the stifling of
free expression in that the Enquirer has had to disable their U.S. website
to U.K. residents. This obviously has significant implications for U.S.
publishers
 Diaz accepted damages of an undisclosed sum from American Media Inc.,
publisher of the Enquirer, on Feb. 16. The magazine also apologized to
Diaz..
