Cameron Diaz sued The Sun newspaper in 2005 over an article claiming she was having an affair with a married man, which caused her distress. The Sun later accepted the article was untrue and contained no evidence of a romantic relationship. In 2007, the National Enquirer also settled a libel case with Diaz and paid her substantial damages over a similar false story alleging an affair. The publisher's lawyer argued these cases abuse the UK court system and stifle free expression for publications in both the US and UK.
