Subject: Beginning Guitar
Topic: Notes on the First String E
Goals and Objectives
- Goals: Students will learn to read the notes E, F, and G using standard musical
notation.
- Objectives: Students will be able to identify the different parts of the guitar and play
basic exercises and melodies.
- Standards: Playing Instruments – Students perform a varied repertoire of music on
instruments alone and with others. Reading – Students read and notate music.
Materials and Tools
Texts: Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1
Handouts: Your Guitar (page 4), Musical Symbols (page 5), Notes on the First String
(pages 6&7).
Procedure
Introduction ( 5 min.): Welcome students to the beginning guitar program. Introduce the
teacher. Explain the main objectives of the course and the rules of conduct during each class
session. Detail necessary materials and student expectations.
Teacher Presentation (10min.): Teacher lecture on the names of the different parts of the
guitar and the names of each string. A brief demonstration on how to tune and hold the guitar.
Class Activities (15min.): Students will read the notes E, F, and G and interpret basic musical
symbols in rhythm.
Homework (10min.): Students will employ the five steps of practicing in their daily routine in
order to play "Spanish Theme" on page 7 of their handouts.
