All living things share certain characteristics that distinguish them from non-living things. Living things are made up of cells, can reproduce, grow and develop, respond to their environment, and maintain homeostasis. They obtain energy from food, water, and air through cellular respiration and release energy through the breakdown of food and its conversion to carbon dioxide and water.
