It provides a case study of a leading business and also examines the research from around the world on remote working. The presentation concludes with some key tips for making virtual workers work for you. This presentation was delivered at the Australian Association of Virtual Industry Professionals in 2012.

Benefits and Savings The following savings have been made: • 171,600km pa from commuting • 3300 car spaces are freed up • $3500 pa in road maintenance • $75,000 pa - office fit-out expenses • Approximately $100,000 pa in staff costs • Green data centre hosting and provision of applications via the ‘cloud’ • 66.5 tonnes CO2 elimination and 13 tones CO2 offset per year

- Our organisation is completely virtual!
- When you think about it, since the industrial revolution we have worked in offices with all the staff travelling to a central location every day. But given improvements in technology, we really don’t need to do this any more. Teleworking not as prevalent in Australian With the NBN rolling out, there is a real possibility to change the current paradigm of work
- Most teleworkers do it at home. Many do it in coffee shops and others do it whilst they are away Armed with a laptop, a broadband connection, a mobile phone and a few online applications its all rather simple. In the 2009 Sensis Teleworking survey 82% of respondants indicated that teleworking had a positive impact. The 1% who indicated that teleworking was a bad thing, when pressed, couldn’t cite any particular reason. Interestingly, small businesses with employees teleworking had a much higher level of business confidence and stronger levels of performance. The benefits of teleworking are substantial at the individual, organisational and national levels Individual Flexible working – work/life balance A 1 minute commute and no need to pay for parking Opportunity for part-time work Opportunity to live where they want to (and can afford)

Most employers don’t like part time or really don’t want to do ‘flexibility’. What about if you live on a rural property 1 hours’ drive west of the Gold Coast how much work do you think there is around? I wont pretend that we got all right the first time…. We have made a few bad hiring choices and didn’t really do enough to get the right cultural fit
