David’s painting is the quintessential example of
Neo-Classicism, a style of severe realism, precise
details, and subject matter derived from antiquity.
The subject is based on a story of betrayal, where
three men must fit to the death, and their women
react and mourn. It is a powerful image inspired by

Voltaire, a NeoClassical writer and philosopher, was
a key element to the shift in power in France during
the French Revolution.
These leaders believed in meritocracy over privilege,
and rule by democracy instead of aristocracy.
Here, Voltaire is portrayed near the end of his life,
wearing a ancient Roman-style toga, symbolizing the
role models of Ancient philosophers like Socrates
and Aristotle.

David returns and becomes a powerful voice for the
Revolution in France. This is an image of a Marat, a
Revolutionist murdered in his bathtub.
He is no longer using ancient Roman references
or styles, but instead leading the way into a new
approach to painting.
This is considered to be one of the first truly
modern paintings, because David is taking the
politics of his day and revealing the horror behind it.

West, an English painter, shows the people wearing
modern clothes instead of ancient costumes, and
the public was initially outraged because they
aren’t wearing Roman costumes. West defined
the contemporary history painting by defying the
Neoclassical tradition.

Jacques Louis David (1749—1825) was a very important painter during the late 18C and the early 19C painting. He was the master of Neo-classicism and later Romanticism. At time he was some what artistic Czar of the time. Neoclassicism was a ‘modernising’ artistic movement of the time after the decline of the aristocratic art of Rococo. In 1782 he became an Academician and in 1784 he returned to Rome to paint the Oath of the Horatii (1785), an important painting in the history of painting. It was more like the underground art of its days. During the French Revolution, he became a Deputy and involved with the politics of the day. Many well-known painters of the early 19C were his pupils, including Gerard & Ingres. As a painter, his portraits were supreme. Due to the changing politics of France, he imposed self-exile and cut off from the main stream of Romanticism in France.

3. About the artist
Jacques -Louis David, often referred to as David for short, was a French
painter.He was born in 30 August of 1748 , in Paris and he died in 29 December
of 1825, in Brussels. David followed the neoclassical style, drawing his themes
from the classical era. He studied art,for a short period of time in Italy ,where he
came in contact with traditional writers and all types of art of the
Regeneration.
4. About the era
The so-called Oath of the Billiards , according to the English translation of the
French"Serment du Jeu de Paume ", was the promising oath given by the French
representatives of the so-called Third Class in the ballroom,that’s why it got its name,in the
beginning of the French Revolution , in 1789.The French Revolution was a period of great
social and political disorders in France , which lasted from 1789 to 1799. It overthrew the
monarchy, established a form of democracy, passed through , and ended in a dictatorship
under Napoleon Bonaparte . Many of the beginnings of the revolution were transmitted to
Western Europe and beyond. Inspired by liberal and radical ideas, the revolution changed
the course of modern history, causing the reduction of absolute monarchies worldwide and
their replacement by democracies .
5. About the painting
This painting depicts the historic moment of the oath of the representatives of the
middle class in the ballroom, on June 20, 1789, that they would grant a
constitution to France. They took refugees in this room, when the king closed the
meeting room of the assembly of the three classes. The painting was made by
Jacques Louis David two years later, in 1791 and immediately conveys the
excitement that had captured the representatives of the Third Class.
6. Feelings & Symbols
This painting has remarkable anti-war characteristics. It shows the excitement of the
crowd ,by raising their right hand, promising its other that they will fight for the
constitution. Another outstanding characteristic in the drawing , is that the crowd is
full of people of different ages , it symbolizes the brotherhood,which is the slogan
of the French Revolution, and that no matter the age everyone is welcome and
equal. Last but not least, from the open curtain, light invades the crowded room,
which -symbolically- illuminates the person in the middle of the image.
