Lawrence Halprin was an influential American landscape architect born in 1916. He earned degrees from Cornell University and Harvard and was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. Some of Halprin's most notable projects include Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco, Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis, and Manhattan Square Park in Rochester. Halprin designed parks and plazas to encourage human interaction and movement. He believed outdoor spaces should serve community needs. Ira Keller Fountain in Portland, featuring an interactive urban waterfall, exemplifies Halprin's vision of designing with the user experience in mind. Halprin had a career spanning 60 years and received many honors for his work pushing the boundaries of landscape architecture.
