Socialist law or Soviet law was a general type of legal system used in socialist and formerly socialist states based on the civil law system but with additions from Marxist-Leninist ideology. Whether socialist law truly constituted its own distinct legal system is debated, but if so it would have been one of the most important legal systems globally until the end of the Cold War.
