➠Size Doesn’t Matter
A boutique hotel among mega resorts,
The Cromwell boasts 188 newly renovated
rooms for visitors looking for a more intimate
spot. While the hotel is small in stature it
packs heavy hitters in the nightlife and dining
realm. Chef and Food Network star Giada
De Laurentiis’ first restaurant, Giada – The
Restaurant, serves up classic Italian dishes
with a panoramic view of the Strip.
Visionary, nightlife king Victor Drai,
put his mark on the property with
not one, but three venues bearing
his name. Start at the Drai’s Beach
Club before partying into the wee
hours at the nightclub and soon-to-
be-opened Drai’s After Hours.
➠Luxury Heads North
Taking over the former Sahara Hotel
& Casino’s location on the north end of the
Strip, SLS Las Vegas aims to lure guests to
this vintage part of Las Vegas Boulevard.
The 1,600-room resort brings a taste of
Los Angeles flavor to the desert with
Phillip Stark-designed restaurants (Bazaar
by José Andrés) and refurbished suites.
Shop for luxury clothing or quirky gifts
at West Coast-favorite Fred Segal before
dining on Mediterranean fare at Cleo. If it’s
nightlife you’re searching for, SLS Las Vegas
has a little something for everyone with DJs
dominating at Foxtail Nightclub and up-
and-coming bands ruling at the intimate,
rock-and-roll-inspired The Sayer’s Club
Las Vegas.
➠South Beach Goes West
Miami favorite the Delano finds a home on
the West Coast at the former THEhotel at the
Mandalay Bay. The revamped 42-story tower
features oversized suites incorporating the
original’s airy beach-side feel. Guests can
expect special access to the hotel’s private
pool within the Mandalay Beach complex and
craft cocktails at Franklin, the comfortably
appointed lobby bar. The 64th-floor miX
features a menu of French and Italian favorites
from celebrity chef Alain Ducasse. That is if
you can concentrate on the menu with the
breathtaking views of Las Vegas from above.
➠View from the Top
Float above Las Vegas Boulevard in one of
the High Roller Observation Wheel’s 28 pods,
and catch a glimpse of the entire Valley. The
climate-controlled cabins whisk up to 40 pas-
sengers on a 30-minute ride with 360-degree
views of the Strip and beyond. The world’s
tallest observation wheel tops out at 550 feet,
and each pod features music and video enter-
tainment. If you’re looking for a unique place
to hold an event look no further than the High
Roller. Pods can be reserved for private func-
tions, and even have the ability to be outfitted
with a private bar and bartender.

Brick & Mortar
Make sure to take a look up and around
while walking the Strip to catch some truly
unique architectural features.
• If The LINQ seems familiar to some, that’s
because its design was inspired bya variety
of American urban warehouse districts,
particularlyNewYork’s Meat Packing District.
• The Grand Staircase at Crystals
CityCenter ascends twenty-four feet
from the main floor to Wolfgang
Puck Pizzeria & Cucina. Built from
eco-friendly bamboo, the staircase was
inspired by Rome’s Spanish Steps and
uses risers of pink agate that are backlit
for maximum visual effect.
• Check out the new Nobu Hotel located
inside Caesars Palace. AD100 architect/
designer David Rockwell created the subtly
glamorous interiors, incorporating natural
materials and Japanese motifs such as
paper lanterns and cherry blossom-print
wall coverings. At the restaurant, book the
four tables enclosed in woven-abaca pods.

After-Dark Trysts
When dinner rolls around, head to the
Palms Casino Resort, where renowned
Chicago chef Tony Hu has opened Lao Sze
Chuan. The menu features more than 200
beef, chicken, pork and seafood options,
as well as dim sum and a variety of soups.
Then head to Ghostbar at the top of the
recently renovated Ivory Tower for drinks
and stunning views.
If you’re looking for more than a nightclub,
Carnaval Court at Harrah’s is your place.
This open-air street party, located at the
center of the Strip, keeps going day and night.
Live bands and DJs play to a diverse crowd,
while flair bartenders dazzle as they mix up
specialty drinks.
The show never stops at Excalibur. Enjoy an
evening of merriment at the Tournament of
Kings, one of Vegas’ most popular dinner
shows; or go for something a bit more risqué
with Australia’s hottest hunks at Thunder from
Down Under.
Celebrate Mardi Gras all year long at The

Vegas Boulevard.

Downtown Las Vegas is where this city got its start,
and it’s experiencing a resurgence. If you haven’t
experienced Downtown, get ready for a wild ride
through a diverse, culturally rich neighborhood
full of fresh and old-school style.
Downtown
Morning
Start your Downtown tour with a hearty meal,
diner-style. Du-par’s at the Golden Gate
casino offers Las Vegas’ favorite pancakes.
Then peek at Vegas’ beginnings with visits
to the Neon Museum, where the iconic and
historical signs of the past live on. If you need
a caffeine fix, head to The Beat Coffeehouse,
where you can grab a latte and some old-
school vinyl. If it’s Friday, swing through the
Downtown 3rd Farmers Market for incompa-
rable freshness.
Noon
Downtown is chock-full of power lunch spots.
Eat where the movers and shakers do with
the fierce flavors of Le Thai on Fremont Street
or homey Mexican cuisine at La Comida. For
more variety, check out the various pie styles
served at Pizza Rock on Third Street, or stroll
through the colorful new Container Park, a
mini-mall stacked with boutique shops and
casual eateries like Pinches Tacos, Big Ern’s
BBQ and wine bar Bin 702.
Night
If you’re looking for energy, you’ve found it.
Downtown is electric at night, and not just
because of the Fremont Street Experience,
the original drag of casinos covered with the
dazzling Viva Vision LED canopy. Grab dinner
at Golden Nugget’s seafood spot Chart House
or dine on perfectly aged steaks at Oscar’s
Steakhouse, a twist on a classic concept from
former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman.
On the east side of Las Vegas Boulevard,
more energy awaits. Fremont East is the
hottest bar district in Las Vegas, where a new
breed of party bounces between classic cock-
tail spots, hip saloons and multi-experience
entertainment venues. All kinds of music
booms at Backstage Bar & Billiards, and just
across the street, DJs pump up a cool young
crowd on the rooftop bar at Commonwealth.
A few steps away in the old-school El Cortez
casino, swill a throwback Blood & Sand
cocktail within the swank, but unpretentious,
Parlour Bar.
For a more laid-back experience, head to
Downtown 3rd for drinks at Downtown Grand’s
refreshing Art Bar, or cross over to the Arts
District to check out the extensive beer list
and creative mixology unfolding at Velveteen
Rabbit. Nightlife knows no boundaries in
today’s Downtown.

inspired acts and classic cabaret hu-

mate theater-in-the-round setting with
guest’s mere feet from the performers. The
show’scolorfulandoutrageoushost,theGazil-
lionaire, along with his sidekick the hilarious-
ly inappropriate Penny Pibbets, lead guests
through acts that vary from death defying
acrobatics to cheekyburlesque performances.

Jubilee!
When you think of Las Vegas you
think of showgirls, and Jubilee! has
long been the last outpost for the
bead-and-feather wearing performers. This
year the Bally’s show got a revamp, adding
new choreography, a story narrative and an
empowering message. While the original Bob
Mackey costumes are still on display (along
with the infamous Sinking of the Titanic num-
ber), the show has been modernized to fit in
with its counter parts on the Strip.
3
Michael Jackson ONE
Everyone knows the music of the
King of Pop, but few have expe-
rienced it from the unique point
of view of Cirque du Soleil. The production
powerhouse utilizes its signature acro-
bat-meets-circus acts to express the music
of Michael Jackson as the performer himself
did. A troupe of 63 performers mixes classic
Jackson choreography (think the moonwalk
and famed Thriller video) with aerial displays
and gymnastic exercises for a show that the
Jackson estate itself endorsed.
4
Frankie Moreno LIVE
at the Stratosphere
A Las Vegas must-see, Frankie
Moreno delivers original hits
with a vintage sound. The talented singer/
songwriter steps into the spotlight at the
Stratosphere to perform a rotating mix of new
songs and choreography, with his exceptional
10-piece band behind him. Frankie delivers
a blend of classic covers and original hits like
Tangerine Honey, earning him a nod for Best
Strip Headliner and Best All-Around Performer.
5
Jabbawockeez
Set to a background of thumping
music and laser-dominated light
show, the famed dance crew
Jabbawockeez deliver eye-popping moves at
their theater at Luxor from behind the cover of
their signature white masks. The show, dubbed
PRiSM, showcases the group’s signature hip-
hop inspired artistry, which challenges the
audience with unexpected special effects and
seemingly impossible choreography.

Brock Radke
is the food and
restaurant
editor at
Las Vegas
Weekly
magazine.
A longtime
local journalist, he’s also the
author of the Strip-centric
column The Incidental Tourist.
By Brock Radke, Las Vegas Food Editor
In the past year, a flood of celebrity chefs and
groundbreaking food concepts made their
return or first-ever landing in Las Vegas. At The
LINQ, the brilliant entertainment corridor lead-
ing from the Strip to the 550-foot, skyline rede-
fining High Roller observation wheel, Brooklyn
Bowl rules. It’s a concert hall with bowling lanes,
multiple bars, and a restaurant with a fresh take
on comfort food from the Bromberg Brothers
(of Blue Ribbon fame). Catch a rock band while
fueling up on classic fried chicken, fun French
bread pizzas or oyster-topped deviled eggs.
Super chef Daniel Boulud made his Strip come-
back in the spring. The culinary legend has
opened the new DB Brasserie at The Venetian,
offering a greatest hits menu from his many
successful New York restaurants, French fare
with Mediterranean and American flourishes.
Another big-city chef, Chicago’s Matthais
Merges, brought his acclaimed Japanese street
food eatery Yusho to the Monte Carlo, a fresh
splash of creativity and unexpected surprise.
Two food TV superstars extended their
popular brands with new restaurants making
the Strip a whole lot tastier. Food Network
wild man Guy Fieri — a graduate of our own
UNLV, by the way — created the fun and
flashy Guy Fieri’s Vegas Kitchen & Bar at the
newly rechristened LINQ Hotel and Casino, an
energizedversionofyourfavoriteneighborhood
bar with over-the-top food including Fireball
lollipop chicken wings and the infamous Bacon
Mac-N-Cheese Burger. And just a bit further
south on the Strip, the incomparable Giada De
Laurentiis chose the new Cromwell boutique
hotel as the site of her first-ever restaurant,
Giada – The Restaurant, a wide-open dining
room with beautiful views of the boulevard
and the cuisine queen’s signature touches on
contemporary Italian food. Don’t miss Giada’s
spaghetti with lemon, basil and shrimp, or her
whole roasted chicken cacciatore.
Kerry Simon, long one of Vegas’ favorite
chefs, debuted Carson Kitchen in the city’s
burgeoning Downtown district. It’s no sur-
prise that an artist so long tied to the local
community would take part in the revitaliza-
tion of Las Vegas’ original center, but it’s the
hip, scrumptious menu that will make Carson
Kitchen your favorite new hot spot. Indulge in
fried chicken skins with smoked honey, the
delicious butter burger or delectable dough-
nut-based bread pudding.

Some of the most delicious discoveries
actually need to be discovered. The

The Pizzeria, a late-night hot spot for a
peerless New York slice. The long beloved

any Vegas reveler, a juicy steak plus grilled

Asian-themed eatery F.A.M.E. at The LINQ,

special chicken and waffles dish only locals

the best-known Thai restaurants in the
country, but regulars know to order off the
Northern Thai portion at the back of the

luxurious osso buco is everybody’s favorite.

  • 13. LASVEGAS.com :: 11 Brick & Mortar Make sure to take a look up and around while walking the Strip to catch some truly unique architectural features. • If The LINQ seems familiar to some, that’s because its design was inspired bya variety of American urban warehouse districts, particularlyNewYork’s Meat Packing District. • The Grand Staircase at Crystals CityCenter ascends twenty-four feet from the main floor to Wolfgang Puck Pizzeria & Cucina. Built from eco-friendly bamboo, the staircase was inspired by Rome’s Spanish Steps and uses risers of pink agate that are backlit for maximum visual effect. • Check out the new Nobu Hotel located inside Caesars Palace. AD100 architect/ designer David Rockwell created the subtly glamorous interiors, incorporating natural materials and Japanese motifs such as paper lanterns and cherry blossom-print wall coverings. At the restaurant, book the four tables enclosed in woven-abaca pods. Tantalizing Las Vegas Transformations After-Dark Trysts When dinner rolls around, head to the Palms Casino Resort, where renowned Chicago chef Tony Hu has opened Lao Sze Chuan. The menu features more than 200 beef, chicken, pork and seafood options, as well as dim sum and a variety of soups. Then head to Ghostbar at the top of the recently renovated Ivory Tower for drinks and stunning views. If you’re looking for more than a nightclub, Carnaval Court at Harrah’s is your place. This open-air street party, located at the center of the Strip, keeps going day and night. Live bands and DJs play to a diverse crowd, while flair bartenders dazzle as they mix up specialty drinks. The show never stops at Excalibur. Enjoy an evening of merriment at the Tournament of Kings, one of Vegas’ most popular dinner shows; or go for something a bit more risqué with Australia’s hottest hunks at Thunder from Down Under. Celebrate Mardi Gras all year long at The Orleans Hotel & Casino. This distinctive property brings the flavor of the “Big Easy” to Vegas, along with some fabulous live entertainment. • 16. 14 :: LASVEGAS.com vegas INSIDER S vegas INSIDER Downtown Las Vegas is where this city got its start, and it’s experiencing a resurgence. If you haven’t experienced Downtown, get ready for a wild ride through a diverse, culturally rich neighborhood full of fresh and old-school style. Downtown Morning Start your Downtown tour with a hearty meal, diner-style. Du-par’s at the Golden Gate casino offers Las Vegas’ favorite pancakes. Then peek at Vegas’ beginnings with visits to the Neon Museum, where the iconic and historical signs of the past live on. If you need a caffeine fix, head to The Beat Coffeehouse, where you can grab a latte and some old- school vinyl. If it’s Friday, swing through the Downtown 3rd Farmers Market for incompa- rable freshness. Noon Downtown is chock-full of power lunch spots. Eat where the movers and shakers do with the fierce flavors of Le Thai on Fremont Street or homey Mexican cuisine at La Comida. For more variety, check out the various pie styles served at Pizza Rock on Third Street, or stroll through the colorful new Container Park, a mini-mall stacked with boutique shops and casual eateries like Pinches Tacos, Big Ern’s BBQ and wine bar Bin 702. Night If you’re looking for energy, you’ve found it. Downtown is electric at night, and not just because of the Fremont Street Experience, the original drag of casinos covered with the dazzling Viva Vision LED canopy. Grab dinner at Golden Nugget’s seafood spot Chart House or dine on perfectly aged steaks at Oscar’s Steakhouse, a twist on a classic concept from former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman. On the east side of Las Vegas Boulevard, more energy awaits. Fremont East is the hottest bar district in Las Vegas, where a new breed of party bounces between classic cock- tail spots, hip saloons and multi-experience entertainment venues. All kinds of music booms at Backstage Bar & Billiards, and just across the street, DJs pump up a cool young crowd on the rooftop bar at Commonwealth. A few steps away in the old-school El Cortez casino, swill a throwback Blood & Sand cocktail within the swank, but unpretentious, Parlour Bar. For a more laid-back experience, head to Downtown 3rd for drinks at Downtown Grand’s refreshing Art Bar, or cross over to the Arts District to check out the extensive beer list and creative mixology unfolding at Velveteen Rabbit. The show’scolorfulandoutrageoushost,theGazil- lionaire, along with his sidekick the hilarious- ly inappropriate Penny Pibbets, lead guests through acts that vary from death defying acrobatics to cheekyburlesque performances. 2 Jubilee! When you think of Las Vegas you think of showgirls, and Jubilee! has long been the last outpost for the bead-and-feather wearing performers. This year the Bally’s show got a revamp, adding new choreography, a story narrative and an empowering message. While the original Bob Mackey costumes are still on display (along with the infamous Sinking of the Titanic num- ber), the show has been modernized to fit in with its counter parts on the Strip. 3 Michael Jackson ONE Everyone knows the music of the King of Pop, but few have expe- rienced it from the unique point of view of Cirque du Soleil. The production powerhouse utilizes its signature acro- bat-meets-circus acts to express the music of Michael Jackson as the performer himself did. A troupe of 63 performers mixes classic Jackson choreography (think the moonwalk and famed Thriller video) with aerial displays and gymnastic exercises for a show that the Jackson estate itself endorsed. 4 Frankie Moreno LIVE at the Stratosphere A Las Vegas must-see, Frankie Moreno delivers original hits with a vintage sound. The talented singer/ songwriter steps into the spotlight at the Stratosphere to perform a rotating mix of new songs and choreography, with his exceptional 10-piece band behind him. Frankie delivers a blend of classic covers and original hits like Tangerine Honey, earning him a nod for Best Strip Headliner and Best All-Around Performer. 5 Jabbawockeez Set to a background of thumping music and laser-dominated light show, the famed dance crew Jabbawockeez deliver eye-popping moves at their theater at Luxor from behind the cover of their signature white masks. A longtime local journalist, he’s also the author of the Strip-centric column The Incidental Tourist. By Brock Radke, Las Vegas Food Editor In the past year, a flood of celebrity chefs and groundbreaking food concepts made their return or first-ever landing in Las Vegas. At The LINQ, the brilliant entertainment corridor lead- ing from the Strip to the 550-foot, skyline rede- fining High Roller observation wheel, Brooklyn Bowl rules. It’s a concert hall with bowling lanes, multiple bars, and a restaurant with a fresh take on comfort food from the Bromberg Brothers (of Blue Ribbon fame). Catch a rock band while fueling up on classic fried chicken, fun French bread pizzas or oyster-topped deviled eggs. Super chef Daniel Boulud made his Strip come- back in the spring. The culinary legend has opened the new DB Brasserie at The Venetian, offering a greatest hits menu from his many successful New York restaurants, French fare with Mediterranean and American flourishes. Another big-city chef, Chicago’s Matthais Merges, brought his acclaimed Japanese street food eatery Yusho to the Monte Carlo, a fresh splash of creativity and unexpected surprise. Two food TV superstars extended their popular brands with new restaurants making the Strip a whole lot tastier. Food Network wild man Guy Fieri — a graduate of our own UNLV, by the way — created the fun and flashy Guy Fieri’s Vegas Kitchen & Bar at the newly rechristened LINQ Hotel and Casino, an energizedversionofyourfavoriteneighborhood bar with over-the-top food including Fireball lollipop chicken wings and the infamous Bacon Mac-N-Cheese Burger. And just a bit further south on the Strip, the incomparable Giada De Laurentiis chose the new Cromwell boutique hotel as the site of her first-ever restaurant, Giada – The Restaurant, a wide-open dining room with beautiful views of the boulevard and the cuisine queen’s signature touches on contemporary Italian food. Don’t miss Giada’s spaghetti with lemon, basil and shrimp, or her whole roasted chicken cacciatore. Kerry Simon, long one of Vegas’ favorite chefs, debuted Carson Kitchen in the city’s burgeoning Downtown district. It’s no sur- prise that an artist so long tied to the local community would take part in the revitaliza- tion of Las Vegas’ original center, but it’s the hip, scrumptious menu that will make Carson Kitchen your favorite new hot spot. Indulge in fried chicken skins with smoked honey, the delicious butter burger or delectable dough- nut-based bread pudding. Moscow Mule ©Oak & Ivy Craft Craze Whiskey Down at MGM Grand — This reinvigorated casino centerpiece has been transformed into a rustic bar and gaming lounge where select swills like Woodford Reserve Double Oak and Four Roses Single Barrel provide the foundation for handcrafted cocktails like the Kentucky- inspired Downhome Punch or the Fireball- augmented Fire in the Hole. Check out the impressive Scotch selection, too. 1923 Bourbon & Burlesque at Mandalay Bay — Travel backto the Roaring Twenties inside this underground speakeasy on the Strip. 1923 boasts a classic mixology program, infused with custom barrel-aged whisky and cabaret-style performances. Oak & Ivy at Downtown Container Park — Downtown’s newest hot spot is a cozy American whiskey cocktail bar specializing in barrel-aged beverages mixed in batches to create unique, fresh flavor combinations. Longbar at the D – The heart of the Downtown party is this lively spot, always action-packed and ready to serve classic casino cocktails and a great list of craft brews.
