2. Inspired by the example of a highly-
esteemed friend who has dedicated 10
years of his life serving the people of
remote islands in Ambon, Seram, and Irian,
alumni of Universitas Airlangga decided to set
up a foundation and built a Floating Hospital
from scratch in order to serve the people in
remote islands. Now the movement is driven by
many young doctors.

3. Yayasan Medika Ksatria Airlangga is a not-for-profit organisation set up 10 January 2017
by the alumni of the Medical Faculty of Airlangga University. The foundation operates a
floating hospital service called Rumah Sakit Terapung Ksatria Airlangga.
The floating hospital is purpose-built from scratch in Galesong-South Sulawesi in the form
of a 27-meter by 7-meter traditional wooden Phinisi ship equipped with modern medical
facilities, including two operating rooms on board.
We conduct comprehensive medical services for the people who live in remote islands in
Indonesia, in particular the eastern seaboard of Indonesia. We send the floating hospital
as well as specialist doctors and the team to go to remote islands to try and alleviate the
health problems in their islands for FREE.

9. Indonesia is a massive archipelagic country with over 17 thousands islands. People in the
remote islands may have some basic medical services through government medical
services called Puskesmas. However, once they need to be referred to specialists or a
hospital, oftentimes, they are either too far; the travelling and services are too expensive;
or it may not even be possible because of the hazardous sea conditions due to their
remote locations.
Hence, we go to their homes in those remote islands.

12. What are the challenges
we are facing?
● How to increase awareness. Indonesia is an archipelagic country with over 17,000 islands. We still face
problems with comprehensive or sometimes basic health services in the remote islands. The lack of
health and logistic infrastructures, and the difficulties to get the service of specialist doctors, may lead to
neglected people in remote islands;
● How to get more government support and donations from institutional donors as well as from the general
public to sustain the running of the programs;
● How to make the foundation more professional, by defining a clear vision and mission, proper
organisation structure, having the right people in the right place, and control mechanisms;
● How to reposition the foundation from almost 100% donation-based to become a more social enterprise
that is not 100% donation-dependent?

13. What do we hope to achieve
by working with you?
● Last year we spent 7 billion rupiah 22 islands serving over 11,482 patients, including 1,532 surgeries for
FREE. We need approximately 300-400 million rupiah per island.
● This year we plan to sail to over 30 islands throughout Indonesia, which may cost over 10 billion rupiah a
year.
● We believe Ksatria Airlangga floating hospital would be sustainable as it is embedded in the Airlangga
University community. However, to make it more impactful, we need to go beyond the community. we
need to move beyond the community alone.
● Increased awareness → join our campaign for access to health services for the remote islands of
Indonesia. Help in any shape of form is welcome!

exists in this vast archipelagic nation, but:
