Land-Use Planning: A Shopping Center.
Introduction In order to understand what environmental problems may arise from the construction of a shopping center. I am analyzing the crossroads shopping center and its impact on the environment.
Pre construction.
Pre construction During the pre construction era this area was inhabited by, Raccoons, deer, squirrels, rabbits, snakes, ducks, and different species of birds. The only path through this area was a narrow single lane street.
Impact of the construction Destruction of habitat Animals were displace, which increase road kill and wondering animals. Increase accidents with animals. More air pollution. Increase Noise pollution Soil erosion increased.
Questions Did you live in this area before the shopping center was constructed? If so, what was the area like before the shopping center was built? What problems do you notice that are associated with the shopping center (noise, traffic, etc.)? Is the shopping center’s interior aesthetically pleasing to you? Is the shopping center’s exterior aesthetically pleasing to you? Do you feel crime in your neighborhood has changed with the construction of the shopping center? Were you consulted in any way before the shopping center was built? If so, in what way and by whom? Yes No 1. 20 5 2. Wooded land with animals. it has increase noise, traffic, people, crime, and air pollutions 25 0 5. 10 15 6. Yes it has increase. 7. 12 13 8. County surveys and during voting periods. And town hall meeting.
Analyses of the shopping center A. The total area of the shopping center which includes, concrete surfaces, parking lots, and buildings is [35800] + [124567]=482567 square footage
B The average height of the trees in the parking lot is 22 feet.
C The trees are planted in a bed of pine straw with short shrubs around them
D 40% on a Sunday afternoon was occupied while the 60% was empty. ( But on a Friday and Saturday afternoon usually 70% to 80% is Occupied.
E The water goes to one of the many drains they have in the parking lot that drains into the underground sewage.
F Lack of mature trees, no flower beds only shrubs, no outside sitting area, no water fountains and no decorated statues.
G Yes there was one narrow single lane road. As the construction of the shopping center began they widen the road so traffic can flow easily in both directions The shopping center was built in 2000
Shopping Center
H There are a total of 30 stores and 6 restaurants and 1 movie theater. in the shopping center. Such as Department stores, office supply, movie theater, clothing store, bath beauty Jewelry, sporting goods, ice cream, schools supplies and Etc.
I No this shopping center was built over a wooden area. http://wikimapia.org/12926200/Conyers-Plaza-shopping-center
J The surrounding areas of undeveloped land is densely filled with mature trees.
K Occasionally you see deer, squirrels, and frequently birds.( ROAD KILL)
Conclusion Major Problems Increase traffic Increase noise Increase crime Increase crowds Increase students hanging out Increase pollution from car emissions Increase fastfood restaurants Continued construction with new hotels and business Loss of wildlife Loss of habitat Poor aesthetics
Major Contributions Increase jobs Increase tax revenue for the county Increase convenience for shopping Entertainment for families, children and students Attract new business and residents.
Minimizing problems Preserving surrounding habitats by limiting additional constructions Route traffic away from surrounding natural habitats.
Designing a shopping center Multiple access locations Increase traffic flow with multiple lanes and multiple turning lanes. Consider packing deck Outside seating and flowers beds all around. Need Arcade Electronic stores Formal dining restaurants Bowling Alley Coffee shop Open entertainment area for concerts and plays. Have a nature walk around the shopping center
