residents,
Fall is in the air! I love this time of year, with the
leaves changing and a much-needed break from
the summer heat, we can now get ready for the
holidays! I anticipate many of you look forward
to spending this time with loved ones as you start
thinking about the turkey this year, or (my favorite)
all of the yummy side dishes!
Many of you throw annual holiday parties in the
neighborhood with friends and neighbors, oth-
er residents may be leaving town this season.
Wherever Thanksgiving day might find you, let
us remember to count our blessings and express
gratitude as it is a wonderful way to start each day.
Remember to send any photos of holiday gather-
ings to us and we will share these in the newsletter
in an upcoming issue.
On the note of gratitude, my son turns one this
month and boy, has the time flown by! We are
expecting our second child in March, excited to be growing our family in New
Orleans and able to share our joy with many of you!
Our Vista team is also growing, and we are thrilled to have new contributors
on board. If you are interested in writing for the publication, let us know as
we have plenty of room for any residents who would like to participate! From
stories and photographs to volunteer efforts, to our Junior Writers and adult
contributors, it is a pleasure to continue to learn about different perspectives
in the community. After all, we are called The Vista for a reason!
Let’s continue to share your views and experiences with friends and neighbors,
and enjoy the strong sense of community that thrives in Lake Vista.

Send in your favorite holiday recipes to The Vista. We would love to share
them with your neighbors! Email Cathy at chlarimer@gmail.com to have you
recipe featured in an upcoming issue.
Arroz con Leche is one of the Rodriguez Families’ grandmother’s
favorites recipes. When Rodi Rodriguez makes this Arroz Con Leche
the entire family thinks on the Abuela patience and love she shares
with them.We hope you make this recipe and your entire family will
enjoy it as much as the Rodriguez family does.
Recipe
Ingredients:
• 1 cup rice, rinsed well
• 4 cups of water
• 1-piece lemon rind (about 2“ piece)
• 1 cinnamon stick
• 1 pinch of salt
• 2 cans sweetened condensed milk
• 1 can evaporated milk
• 1 tsp. vanilla extract
• 1/3 C sugar
Place rice, water, lemon rind, cinnamon and salt in a pot and
bring to boil. Once boiling, lower heat to medium high and stir
frequently with a wooden spoon so rice doesn’t burn or stick to
bottom of pot. Once the majority of the water is absorbed and
the rice is soft, add the remaining ingredients. Return to boil
and reduce heat to medium. Stir consistently so rice doesn’t
burn or stick to bottom of pot. Once the majority of the liquid is
absorbed, remove from burner and place in container. Lightly
sprinkle with cinnamon powder.
Passing down your family legacy is most effectively done in the
kitchen. You can remember your own family legacy by passing down
recipes and offering your children the spices of your youth. Cuban

To Wear
Ryan McFarland, a ten year old who was previously at St. Pius X and
presently attends Christian Brothers School, recently earned his
first-degree black belt in taekwondo. He began taking taekwondo
when he was only five years old because it “seemed like fun.” He
achieved his black belt four years later. After passing numerous
other belt levels, Ryan’s test for his black belt was, by far, the most
challenging. He had to fast for 48 hours, meditate for six hours,
write and deliver a speech in front of an audience, as well as perfect
various forms that he learned throughout his training. He even
had to break four boards at one time, several times in a row! In
recognition of his hard work and dedication, Ryan was honored that
same night with a trophy as Best Overall from his taekwondo studio.
Ryan is very happy and proud to have achieved his goal. His family
is very proud of him too. Besides having fun, Ryan also learned
discipline and self-defense from taekwondo.

“We love that Lake Vista is quiet,
peaceful, and family oriented. It’s
great to look out the window and
see all the neighborhood kids
enjoying the park.”
– Brandy Lalla
Brandy is a stay-at-home mom and the owner of The Compliance
Company, providing regulatory compliance training to financial
institutions nationwide. She started working in the banking
industry at 16 years old with a summer job at Hibernia National
Bank. She never left the financial industry and over the years,
she earned a degree in Accounting from UNO and designations as
a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Regulatory Compli-
ance Manager (CRCM), and Certified Anti-Money Laundering
Specialist (CAMS). Brandy has worked in many areas of banking
but eventually found a home in deposit and operational com-
pliance. In 2012, after working as a Compliance Officer at local
bank, she ventured out onto her own.
It makes sense that the Lallas, as self-proclaimed “hardcore food-
ies,” visit the local Farmer’s Market on Saturdays and start their
Sunday morning off with pancakes from Another Broken Egg. But
when asked to name her favorite restaurant, Brandy replied, “With
John in the food industry, it's hard to choose a favorite. Obvious-
ly, you can't go wrong with any restaurant from Emeril's group,
Brennan's group, especially Commanders! And we also love any
Donald Link, John Besh or Susan Spicer restaurants. Recently, we
ate at Chef Alon's Shaya restaurant and it was AMAZING!”
On the nights that the Lallas want to stay near the neighborhood,
they go to The Backyard for dinner because it is also a great place
for Jack to run around. In addition to enjoying food together, the
jumped on the opportunity. “We love our new house, the parks
and our neighbors. Walking the pathways is one of our favorite
things to do”, she said.
The Lalla family has a passion for cooking and entertaining
often taking turns pretending to be gourmet chefs. Their love
of food makes sense if you know that John aka “Meatdude” is
the co-owner and CEO of Natco Foodservice, a family business
started by his grandfather in 1925. Natco, currently owned and
managed by John and three of his 12 siblings, provides a variety
of protein solutions across LA, MS, TX, and TN to restaurants,
hotels, hospitals and schools.
Working at Natco since he was 9 years old, John started in the
food industry by making hamburger boxes for restaurants like
Camilla Grill for $0.50 an hour. After attending UNO, Loyola,
and Delgado, John realized that college was not right for him. He
returned to the family business where he now manages the sales
and production divisions. John shared what he liked about his
work, “At Natco, I really enjoy working with people and helping
them understand that ‘no’ and ‘can't’ are just the beginning and
that there is always a solution.”
As a member of the Louisiana Egg Board, John helps oversee the
USDA’s monitoring of egg quality and promote the health benefits
of eating eggs. He also works with the LSU Ag Center through his
memberships with both the Louisiana Agriculture Council, and the
Louisiana Cattlemen's Association.
When driving along Finch Street, you may be able to smell the
barbeque from John and Brandy Lalla’s backyard, as they engage
in their favorite pastime, grilling and relaxing poolside with their
children Isabella 20 and Jack 3 on the patio, poolside. “We love
our patio whether we are having our morning coffee there or
relaxing with a glass of wine with dinner”, Brandy explained.
As “brand new” Lake Vista residents, the Lalla family wasted no
time when it came to starting family traditions involving their
beautiful backyard setting. “We moved into the neighborhood in
October, 2015 and immediately began having Saints parties. We
tell our neighbors, if you see us watching the game, stop by and
help us cheer them on!” Married in 2011, Brandy told us that
she and John waited for the right house to come up for sale in
Lake Vista. In 2015, when their house went on the market, they

A History Of Clean With A
Contemporary Vision
When Hurricane Katrina damaged its Mid-City location, Russell's Cleaning
came back stronger. Serving the greater New Orleans with its dry cleaning
needs since 1930, Russell’s has recently invested in specialized equipment and
an automated drying room to clean area rugs at their Metairie location.
Russell’s
Cleaning
Services
Founder, Russell
Cuoco started
the business by
washing clothes
in his mother’s
backyard and
delivering them
to customers on
his bicycle.
Best known for its specialized cleaning services of
wedding gowns, beaded gowns, antique items and
leather or fur coats, Russell’s also cleans bedspreads,
down comforters, bed pillows, draperies, shades and
cornice boards. But that’s not all. The Russell’s family
has grown and diversified into cleaning just about
anything, including restoring the soft contents of your
home damaged by fire or flooding.
Because it has always been the Bauer family’s
philosophy to maintain the highest standards, they
make sure their cleaning techniques are current
and state-of-the-art. Russell’s uses a process
called “green cleaning,” an environmentally
friendly process. This process ensures that your
dry cleanable garments are delicately washed with
special detergents that are much gentler to fabrics.
Founder, Russell Cuoco started the business by
washing clothes in his mother’s backyard and deliv-
ering them to customers on his bicycle. Eventually,
Cuoco established a store front and his successor
and son-in-law, Richard Bauer, took over the busi-
ness. In 1996, Richard’s son, Eric and his sister,
Andree, opened Russell’s Cleaning Services which
in 2006 merged with Russell’s Cleaners.
For a business that has made its success by word-
of-mouth, having a standing reputation for quality
goes a long way in retaining its customers. “Most
of our customers tell us that mother or grand-

Lallas like to ride bikes, attend festivals and spend
family time together. “We really enjoy our busy
part of Lake Vista - Foliage Park! We love walking
the paths, especially Jack who loves to visit every-
one's backyard toys.” Brandy said.
So what do they enjoy individually?
Jack, the youngest member of the Lalla family,
loves learning about art and movement at the Green
Trees Program at Isidore Newman School. He also
enjoys playing with Isabella, attending swim classes
at Love Swimming and watching his favorite televi-
sion show, Daniel Tiger.
A junior at the College of Business at LSU; Isabella
spends most her time studying and babysitting but
loves spending time with Jack and attending Barre
workout classes.
Brandy’s indulgence is Home & Garden Televisions
where she finds new ideas for home renovations
and decorating.
And John’s favorite thing, you guessed it, it’s grilling!
“At the end of the day, nothing beats bringing home a
hand selected steak to cook on the BBQ! Having access to
the best meat in the world does have its perks”, he said.
Thank you, Brandy and John, for sharing with The Vista.

The Meadows wouldn’t know what to do without
their dogs! Their eight-year-old Dachshund
Copper was rescued from PAWS because daughter
Elizabeth fell in love with a friend’s dachshund and
wanted one just like him. Shortly after requesting
a dachshund from PAWS, they were contacted
and told that there was one they should come see.
Before they left the house Gary said, “I’m putting
my foot down, and y’all better not come home with
another dog.” Well, needless to say, Elizabeth fell
in love, and we brought him home. Gary just shook
his head when we came home, and it took all of
about two hours, and the two of them were curled
up on the couch together.
They had a Chihuahua, Pumpkin, who passed away
in January 2015 and Copper got really depressed be-
cause he lost his best friend. So the Meadows (Gary,
Heather, James Lee, James and Elizabeth) decided to
get Cash to keep Copper company and to cheer him
up. It worked! They love to play wrestle with each
other. Cash, a Havanese is now one year old.
Despite their differences, both of these male dogs
love to cuddle, are really good at begging and are
extremely spoiled! They know when it is time to
eat and will come get the family. In fact, Heather
believes Cash can talk!

Moore
Gloria and Mark Moore
moved to Lake Vista
in August 1997. They
purchased a 2 bedroom,
2 bath, 1 story ranch style
home that needed a lot of
TLC. After several years
of remodeling, they finally
completed the kitchen and
bathroom renovations.
Then in 2005, Katrina hit
and pretty much destroyed
everything they renovated.
The original house was built
in 1959 and had no pilings. They hired a structural engineer who
recommended that they tear down and rebuild with pilings since
the concrete slab was severely compromised by the flood waters.
Mark and Gloria designed the home together and hired an
architect to put their ideas on paper. Their new house has the
identical footprint as their old house and the result is a unique
contemporary home with just under 3000 square feet custom
fitted to the couple’s personal tastes.
In December 2007 they moved in to their newly built home. The
stained and concrete floors cover the entire downstairs. “The
floors are perfect for us since we have three dogs and an umbrel-
la cockatoo, and it really makes cleaning easier” says Gloria. In
keeping with the desire to have an open floor plan, the dining
room is tucked into a corner on the front of the house, where it’s
very much a part of the large entertaining space, yet unobtru-
sive. The kitchen is a 19-foot long galley style that is extremely
efficient and provides plenty of space. “We have the perfect
floorplan for our lifestyle with a unique wrap-around deck, a pool
and patio” says Gloria. Mark’s favorite feature of the house is
the upstairs terrace that wraps around three sides of the house.
“I know it was an extravagance to build such a sturdy steel and
concrete terrace. In the end, I’m happy we included it since it
gives us such a great view of the downtown skyline and City Park
(it’s our Central Park), and it allows us to step out of our master
bedroom and enjoy the view of our pool, the garden and Lake
Vista’s Foliage Park.”
The couple agrees that the ill wind of Katrina was hard to face at
first. However, they both feel that they made something good out
of a bad situation and ended up with their dream home in what
they consider the most unique neighborhood in New Orleans,
Lake Vista.

What
If?
By Gigi Halpern
What if my dog can really understand me? My mom recently
recommended a good book to me called
by Garth Stein. The book is still on my to-do list, but
she mentioned that it was completely told from the point of
view of a dog. That got me thinking. Should one watch what
one says and does around their dog? In my opinion, we should
be careful about what we say or do around any dog because it's
possible that dogs do have feelings. Evidence of their feelings are
in their personalities. Like humans, dogs often display a variety
of emotions and behaviors. For example, they can be curious,
playful, or very aggressive. Most dogs are curious when they see
a new face. Our lab, Ruby, sits by the door in a depression until
my brother returns. My family and I all joke that she suffers
from separation anxiety. Sometimes, dogs can play roughly and
get into fights with other dogs. Some might call it instinct, but it
could simply be that this is a part of their personalities. Equally
important, dogs can communicate with us. Would they be able to
do that if they didn't understand us? They may not have a voice,
but they sure can let us know when they want to go outside, for
example, by a bark or a scratch at the door. Likewise, they nudge
you or bring you a toy to notify you that they want to play. My own
dog, a hyperactive chihuahua, runs to greet me every day when I
get home from school, letting me know he is happy to see me.
It's no wonder, then, that dogs make such great companions. If
they were not capable of understanding us, how could they be
such good friends to us? They always seem to know how we are
feeling. They want to make us happy if we are feeling sad. Dogs
will jog with you, play ball with you, rest with you, even watch
TV with you... simply to be near you! They can sense our feelings
and our love for them. Even when they are uncared for, they
seem to have unconditional love for us.
All of the above considered, the next time you look into your
dog's eyes, look deeply. Pay attention to what they do. Talk to
them, observe them, listen to them. It is said that the eyes are the
windows to one's soul. Maybe dogs have more of a soul than you
imagine. How else could they be "man's best friend"?

Jessica Perilloux, owner of Lakeview Creative Arts (LCA), has
been helping preschoolers through college students find their
passion since 2004. She started as co-director of Shining Stars
School of Dance in Lake Vista, but when they closed after Hurri-
cane Katrina, she opened LCA in 2006.
Even after earning her Bachelor of Arts in Business from Loyola
University and her MBA from Kaplan University, Jessica was
not always certain of her path. Although her impressive resume
includes dancing in film and theater as well as instructing many
dance styles, she decided to focus on the younger generation. "I
think it's important that we, and especially our children, find out
what we are good at and enjoy doing. Personally, I love dance. It
makes me feel more alive than anything else. I am so lucky to be
fulfilled every day by a job that I love," she explained.
LCA has something for everyone, with programs in dance as well
martial arts, gymnastics and holiday mini art camps. With 140
children attending classes weekly, some even participate in mul-
tiple programs. A unique class is their “creative movement” for
children as young as 12 months old, focusing on teaching basic
motor skills, beginning tumble, and tap. Starting at age 2, chil-
dren can learn a variety of dance styles (Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical,
Musical Theater and Hip Hop) in an encouraging and supportive
environment. And for teens and young adults interested in taking
the best hip hop class in New Orleans, they can find it right at
LCA taught by Josh Eddington.
It is Jessica Perilloux’s philosophy that children are our future
and through encouragement and focus, they can each achieve
fantastic heights.
But dance is not the only creative way that children can find their
passion through movement. LCA offers a variety of gymnastics
classes for the beginner acrobat as well as the more advanced
tumbler. A beginner cheerleading class is also available for those
5-10 year olds who really want to learn basic cheer skills and
tumbling. And their martial arts pro-
gram, taught by Master Tyler Hosch,
teaches students self-discipline and
socialization while incorporating fit-
ness and concentration in TaeKwonDo
classes for ages 3 and up.
“I love that we are in the center of the neighborhood and have so
much to offer,” Jessica told us. “The residents of Lake Vista love
their neighborhood and love to walk through it. They know one
another, and they know each other’s families. It’s a great commu-
nity to be a part of.”
All of the LCA staff has worked there for 2 or more years. “We
are like a family here. My office manager, Elizabeth Steigman,
and I were friends at Mt Carmel (and both Pink Panthers) and her
daughter Adele has been coming here for three years. Because
the neighborhood is safe, children can ride their bikes here.
Some of the kids have been with us since we opened, and it has
been so wonderful to watch them grow,” she said.passion

athletes, aged 4 to 25 years and led diving programs in Florida,
California, Maryland, North Carolina and Louisiana.
While attending Penn State, Chris was a five-time All-American
and Big 10 Diver of the Year in 1994. He then went on to be-
come a six-time member of the U.S. National Team, a three-time
national champion and was USA International Three-Meter
Synchro Champion in 2000.
Chris explained to us why he chose coaching as a profession,
“Because of my competitive side as an athlete, I enjoy watching
the success of others. I have always loved watching the expres-
sion on someone’s face change when he or she does something
they didn’t know they were capable of doing. It is so rewarding to
watch. I spent my life coaching because it is the one area where
I am truly confident that I know what I am doing – right down to
the core to my existence”.
A native of Allentown, Pennsylvania Chris has lived in Lake Vista
with his wife, Liz, since 2006. They met in Ft. Lauderdale while
Chris was training for the nationals. Liz, who is from New Orle-
ans, was living with her sister and met Chris while dropping off
her niece and nephew at their diving lessons. The rest, as they
say, was history.
After they married, the Devines moved to California and then
North Carolina to follow Chris’ diving career. But when Liz’s
mother called to let Chris know that Tulane was looking for a div-
ing coach, they both were excited about the possibility of moving to
New Orleans. “Aiden was 10 months old and I remember flying in
for the interview with his head on my lap. Then, two months later,
I started my job at Tulane on Aiden’s first birthday,” Chris said.
Liz, who grew up in Lakeview, wanted to look at houses by the lake-
front first. When they found their house on Warbler, they knew it
was home. “Lake Vista has been a wonderful place to raise our four
boys. Aiden (13) goes to school at Jesuit; Reese (12) is at Christian
Brothers and Tilden 10 and Cameron 9 both at St. Pius. I have lived
already led many young athletes to success and his extensive
resume shows it. From helping 21 athletes qualify for Junior
Olympic Zone Championships while at Mission Viejo Nadadores
to seeing eight of his team reach the 2004 North Carolina High
School State Championships, he is all about having them live up
to their potential. “Many people don’t get to see that amazing
transformation that takes place after an athlete puts in countless
of hours. As a coach, when you go home and put your head on
your pillow, that is the part that make you smile,” he said.
It also makes Chris smile to teach his sons, who are into soccer
and baseball, the basics of movement control and fitness so that
they can fine tune their athletic skills. A true leader who this
year has become President of St. Pius X Men’s Club, Chris is
thrilled to have the opportunity to touch more lives in a positive
way. “What I love about our men’s club is that out of 400 mem-
bers on list, about 150 actively participate,” he explained. “There
is a great blend in our group, one third are 1st and 2nd year mem-
bers, one third have been members for 5-10 years and the rest
no longer have children but still come for the fellowship”. The
Men’s Club just held its annual Halloween Fest & Haunted House,
their biggest fundraising event. “This annual event raises enough
money to support our group year round and lets us help the par-
ish on a monthly basis with a variety of needs. It is a triple win
because we get to help the parish, make friends and have fun in
the process,” he said.
in many places because of
my diving career, and this
place is really special.”
As Chief Information
Officer of a global credit
reporting business, Liz
began to travel more.
So, after Chris led the Tulane Swimming and Diving Team to a
Conference USA title in 2005, he took time off to help raise their
family. “We wanted to make sure one of us would be home in the
afternoon to pick up our boys from school so I decided to become
a stay-at-home dad.” he said.
Then one day Chris was out looking for place to get his four boys
haircuts and couldn’t find one without a long wait. So in 2012,
Chris and Liz became owners of a Sports Clips franchise. “Sport
Clips is like an old-time barbershop but has T.V’s playing sports at
each station. I loved the concept so we bought in. It’s a great posi-
tive atmosphere for men and makes getting a haircut fun,” he said.
In 2013 Chris re-joined Tulane as the Head Diving Coach. “I
missed coaching because it’s not just about diving. When I see
an 18 year old on his or her first day with eyes wide open, scared
of life and then watch as that athlete grows athletically, academ-
ically and emotionally, it is incredible.” Before Tulane, Chris had

thoroughly paint all grooves and cabinet details, without using
too much paint. Thin coats of paint will dry more quickly and
show fewer brushstrokes. Allow each coat to dry for about four
hours before sanding and beginning the next coat. Two or three
coats of paint should cover your cabinets well.
finish
After all parts and pieces have had ample time to dry, reattach
all doors and drawers according to the labels you attached in the
beginning. For a truly fresh look, add updated drawer pulls and
knobs. Once your kitchen is reassembled, sit back and enjoy what
is sure to feel like a brand new kitchen!
Want to update your kitchen without taking
on a full-blown remodel? A little bit of paint
can go a long way, especially when it comes
to your kitchen cabinets. You can quickly and
inexpensively change the look of your entire

research
First of all, decide on the color and finish you want. Are you going
from natural wood to painted wood? From white, painted cabinets
to dual-tone upper and lower cabinets? Find inspiration photos
online, and then make an appointment to visit your local paint
store for some in-person advice. A paint expert can help you de-
termine the right colors and type of paint for your specific needs.
prep
The key to any successful painting project is taking the time to
properly prepare the surface. You’ll first want to cover any adjacent
countertops and flooring. Remove doors and hardware, and label
each piece with a number corresponding to the space it belongs
in. Clean the surface of your cabinet drawers, doors and boxes to
remove any built up dirt and grime. A degreaser should do the trick.
Fill any gouges or holes with wood putty. Then, with a very fine-grit
sandpaper, thoroughly sand the surface of your cabinets.
prime
Prime all surfaces with a high-quality sandable primer. A sand-
able primer will fill in any exposed wood grain, while still allow-
ing you to sand the surface smooth. Paint your interior panels
before painting the rails and stiles, and keep flat to avoid drip-
ping paint. You may need at least two coats of primer to ensure
a smooth-finished surface. Paint against the grain on your first
coat, and with the grain on the second. After the painted surfaces
have dried for several hours, sand away any visible brush strokes
with a medium-grit sandpaper, and then a fine-grit sandpaper.
Vacuum any remaining dust.

With all surfaces laid flat, begin by painting edges, openings and
sides, then paint the faces of your doors and drawers. Be sure to

Spend leSS than Your MonthlY earningS
Spending less than what you earn is an easy principle in theory,
but can be challenging in reality. Calculate your monthly expen-
ditures and track where each penny in your pocket goes. If you’re
not using a budget, implement one for your family. Once you mas-
ter this money-saving method, increase your savings to at least
10%, build your emergency fund to stash away six months’ worth
of living expenses, and work on your investment portfolio.
reduce deBt
If you’re in debt, get out of it. Eradicating 100% of your debt is the
goal, but even reducing debt can be a step in the right direction.
Almost 40% of Americans carry some sort of credit card debt,
which causes them to fork over funds for interest each month.
Reduce or eliminate your credit card debt to increase your credit
score, which is critical for securing a mortgage with optimal rates.
Swipe leSS
Consumers spend more using plastic – consider it the cost of con-
venience. It has been documented that people spend 12-18% more
when using credit cards. The average bill for McDonald’s is $7.00
when using a credit card versus $4.50 with cash. Even those who
pay off their balance faithfully each month end up paying more in
the long run. So think twice before you swipe.
Don’t let another year go by wondering where all the money
went. Build a budget for the New Year and create financial stabil-
ity in the process.
The NewYear is a chance to start over, assess your priorities and plan accordingly. Don’t leave your budget out of the equation.
Simply tracking expenses can be an effective tool that penny pinchers and thriving entrepreneurs can all use. Knowing where the
money goes can be instrumental in tapping into better financial health.

With excessive calories and holiday stress, blood pressure can inevitably rise over the holidays. For-
tunately, with a few tips, you’ll be able to reduce your blood pressure over the holidays – naturally!
THiNk FOOd + FiTNess
Don’t digest Thanksgiving dinner without a Thanksgiving stroll.
Sign up for the Turkey Trot! Create a calorie burn on this holi-
day known for pigging out – and do your blood pressure a favor
in the process. Simply getting your body into motion by walking
can lower your blood pressure. Don’t be a couch potato over the
holidays. Get up, get moving (even if that means playing Poke-
mon Go or holiday shopping) and do your body a favor. Don’t
underestimate the power of fitness. Even a brisk 20-minute
walk several times per week can lower blood pressure. Shed-
ding a few extra pounds or a few inches off your waistline is
helpful in reducing blood pressure too.
dON’T OveRiNdulge
Overindulgence seems to come with the holidays, but try feeding
your stomach (eating when your stomach growls) rather than by
force of habit. Mindful eating can cause calorie reduction, weight
loss, and help you achieve better health (including your blood
pressure!). Change your habits by creating a food diary. Don’t
overindulge with alcohol either. Binge drinking can have a nega-
tive effect on blood pressure, even causing it to rise more than 20
points. Stick to two drinks or less each day.
saY NO TO salT
The holidays come with all sorts of opportunities for seconds (or
even thirds), but in doing so, salt intake rises, which can result
in increased blood pressure readings. According to the Dietary
Guidelines for Americans, 2,300 milligrams per day of sodium is
recommended. However, those with high blood pressure should
limit their intake of salt to 1,500 milligrams per day. Shrimp,
ham, and gravy pack a punch of sodium – anywhere from 480
milligrams to a whopping 650 milligrams per serving. Even that
dinner roll can be a little over 218 milligrams. Exercise modera-
tion and portion control.

Who says you can’t eat healthy over the holidays? Make bananas
your friend; eating two bananas daily can lower blood pressure
10 points, thanks to the potassium. Not a banana fan? Chomp on
dates, sip tomato juice, or even go heavy on the guacamole (with
potassium-rich avocados).
Don’t let your blood pressure soar over the holidays. Increase
your activity level and decrease your calorie consumption and
intake of sodium-rich foods. You’ll be glad you did!

We would love to share them with your neighbors! Email Cathy at chlarimer@gmail.com to have you recipe featured in an upcoming issue. Arroz con Leche is one of the Rodriguez Families’ grandmother’s favorites recipes. When Rodi Rodriguez makes this Arroz Con Leche the entire family thinks on the Abuela patience and love she shares with them.We hope you make this recipe and your entire family will enjoy it as much as the Rodriguez family does. Recipe Ingredients: • 1 cup rice, rinsed well • 4 cups of water • 1-piece lemon rind (about 2“ piece) • 1 cinnamon stick • 1 pinch of salt • 2 cans sweetened condensed milk • 1 can evaporated milk • 1 tsp. vanilla extract • 1/3 C sugar Place rice, water, lemon rind, cinnamon and salt in a pot and bring to boil. Once boiling, lower heat to medium high and stir frequently with a wooden spoon so rice doesn’t burn or stick to bottom of pot. Once the majority of the water is absorbed and the rice is soft, add the remaining ingredients. Return to boil and reduce heat to medium. Stir consistently so rice doesn’t burn or stick to bottom of pot. Once the majority of the liquid is absorbed, remove from burner and place in container. Lightly sprinkle with cinnamon powder. Passing down your family legacy is most effectively done in the kitchen. You can remember your own family legacy by passing down recipes and offering your children the spices of your youth. He began taking taekwondo when he was only five years old because it “seemed like fun.” He achieved his black belt four years later. After passing numerous other belt levels, Ryan’s test for his black belt was, by far, the most challenging. He had to fast for 48 hours, meditate for six hours, write and deliver a speech in front of an audience, as well as perfect various forms that he learned throughout his training. He even had to break four boards at one time, several times in a row! In recognition of his hard work and dedication, Ryan was honored that same night with a trophy as Best Overall from his taekwondo studio. Ryan is very happy and proud to have achieved his goal. His family is very proud of him too. Besides having fun, Ryan also learned discipline and self-defense from taekwondo. 14 15The Vista• November 2016 November 2016 • The Vista meet your neighbors Photography by Erika Parker By Becky Rolland “We love that Lake Vista is quiet, peaceful, and family oriented. It’s great to look out the window and see all the neighborhood kids enjoying the park.” – Brandy Lalla Brandy is a stay-at-home mom and the owner of The Compliance Company, providing regulatory compliance training to financial institutions nationwide. She started working in the banking industry at 16 years old with a summer job at Hibernia National Bank. She never left the financial industry and over the years, she earned a degree in Accounting from UNO and designations as a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Regulatory Compli- ance Manager (CRCM), and Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS). Brandy has worked in many areas of banking but eventually found a home in deposit and operational com- pliance. In 2012, after working as a Compliance Officer at local bank, she ventured out onto her own. It makes sense that the Lallas, as self-proclaimed “hardcore food- ies,” visit the local Farmer’s Market on Saturdays and start their Sunday morning off with pancakes from Another Broken Egg. But when asked to name her favorite restaurant, Brandy replied, “With John in the food industry, it's hard to choose a favorite. Obvious- ly, you can't go wrong with any restaurant from Emeril's group, Brennan's group, especially Commanders! And we also love any Donald Link, John Besh or Susan Spicer restaurants. Recently, we ate at Chef Alon's Shaya restaurant and it was AMAZING!” On the nights that the Lallas want to stay near the neighborhood, they go to The Backyard for dinner because it is also a great place for Jack to run around. In addition to enjoying food together, the jumped on the opportunity. “We love our new house, the parks and our neighbors. Walking the pathways is one of our favorite things to do”, she said. The Lalla family has a passion for cooking and entertaining often taking turns pretending to be gourmet chefs. Their love of food makes sense if you know that John aka “Meatdude” is the co-owner and CEO of Natco Foodservice, a family business started by his grandfather in 1925. Natco, currently owned and managed by John and three of his 12 siblings, provides a variety of protein solutions across LA, MS, TX, and TN to restaurants, hotels, hospitals and schools. Working at Natco since he was 9 years old, John started in the food industry by making hamburger boxes for restaurants like Camilla Grill for $0.50 an hour. After attending UNO, Loyola, and Delgado, John realized that college was not right for him. He returned to the family business where he now manages the sales and production divisions. John shared what he liked about his work, “At Natco, I really enjoy working with people and helping them understand that ‘no’ and ‘can't’ are just the beginning and that there is always a solution.” As a member of the Louisiana Egg Board, John helps oversee the USDA’s monitoring of egg quality and promote the health benefits of eating eggs. He also works with the LSU Ag Center through his memberships with both the Louisiana Agriculture Council, and the Louisiana Cattlemen's Association. When driving along Finch Street, you may be able to smell the barbeque from John and Brandy Lalla’s backyard, as they engage in their favorite pastime, grilling and relaxing poolside with their children Isabella 20 and Jack 3 on the patio, poolside. “We love our patio whether we are having our morning coffee there or relaxing with a glass of wine with dinner”, Brandy explained. As “brand new” Lake Vista residents, the Lalla family wasted no time when it came to starting family traditions involving their beautiful backyard setting. “We moved into the neighborhood in October, 2015 and immediately began having Saints parties. We tell our neighbors, if you see us watching the game, stop by and help us cheer them on!” Married in 2011, Brandy told us that she and John waited for the right house to come up for sale in Lake Vista. 16 17The Vista• November 2016 November 2016 • The Vista sponsor spotlight By: Becky Rolland A History Of Clean With A Contemporary Vision When Hurricane Katrina damaged its Mid-City location, Russell's Cleaning came back stronger. Serving the greater New Orleans with its dry cleaning needs since 1930, Russell’s has recently invested in specialized equipment and an automated drying room to clean area rugs at their Metairie location. Russell’s Cleaning Services Founder, Russell Cuoco started the business by washing clothes in his mother’s backyard and delivering them to customers on his bicycle. Best known for its specialized cleaning services of wedding gowns, beaded gowns, antique items and leather or fur coats, Russell’s also cleans bedspreads, down comforters, bed pillows, draperies, shades and cornice boards. But that’s not all. The Russell’s family has grown and diversified into cleaning just about anything, including restoring the soft contents of your home damaged by fire or flooding. Because it has always been the Bauer family’s philosophy to maintain the highest standards, they make sure their cleaning techniques are current and state-of-the-art. Russell’s uses a process called “green cleaning,” an environmentally friendly process. This process ensures that your dry cleanable garments are delicately washed with special detergents that are much gentler to fabrics. Founder, Russell Cuoco started the business by washing clothes in his mother’s backyard and deliv- ering them to customers on his bicycle. Eventually, Cuoco established a store front and his successor and son-in-law, Richard Bauer, took over the busi- ness. In 1996, Richard’s son, Eric and his sister, Andree, opened Russell’s Cleaning Services which in 2006 merged with Russell’s Cleaners. For a business that has made its success by word- of-mouth, having a standing reputation for quality goes a long way in retaining its customers. “Most of our customers tell us that mother or grand- mother used Russell’s” says Bauer. “I just want our customers to know that Russell's is still the same business of cleaning almost everything; we just have more ways to clean.” “ “ Get to know your neighbors better by having your family featured in the next available issue! Email us at teahnna.donaubauer@n2pub.com Lallas like to ride bikes, attend festivals and spend family time together. “We really enjoy our busy part of Lake Vista - Foliage Park! We love walking the paths, especially Jack who loves to visit every- one's backyard toys.” Brandy said. So what do they enjoy individually? Jack, the youngest member of the Lalla family, loves learning about art and movement at the Green Trees Program at Isidore Newman School. He also enjoys playing with Isabella, attending swim classes at Love Swimming and watching his favorite televi- sion show, Daniel Tiger. A junior at the College of Business at LSU; Isabella spends most her time studying and babysitting but loves spending time with Jack and attending Barre workout classes. Brandy’s indulgence is Home & Garden Televisions where she finds new ideas for home renovations and decorating. And John’s favorite thing, you guessed it, it’s grilling! “At the end of the day, nothing beats bringing home a hand selected steak to cook on the BBQ! Having access to the best meat in the world does have its perks”, he said. Thank you, Brandy and John, for sharing with The Vista. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Send us an email; we would love to hear from you! Inquiries may be emailed to Cathy at chlarimer@gmail. com. Dogs, cats, horses, fish, reptiles and any other animals are welcome! The Meadows wouldn’t know what to do without their dogs! Their eight-year-old Dachshund Copper was rescued from PAWS because daughter Elizabeth fell in love with a friend’s dachshund and wanted one just like him. Shortly after requesting a dachshund from PAWS, they were contacted and told that there was one they should come see. Before they left the house Gary said, “I’m putting my foot down, and y’all better not come home with another dog.” Well, needless to say, Elizabeth fell in love, and we brought him home. Gary just shook his head when we came home, and it took all of about two hours, and the two of them were curled up on the couch together. They had a Chihuahua, Pumpkin, who passed away in January 2015 and Copper got really depressed be- cause he lost his best friend. So the Meadows (Gary, Heather, James Lee, James and Elizabeth) decided to get Cash to keep Copper company and to cheer him up. It worked! They love to play wrestle with each other. Cash, a Havanese is now one year old. Despite their differences, both of these male dogs love to cuddle, are really good at begging and are extremely spoiled! They know when it is time to eat and will come get the family. In fact, Heather believes Cash can talk! 24 25The Vista• November 2016 November 2016 • The Vista Do you have a particularly unique home you would like us to feature in The Vista? Does one of your neighbors deserve some recognition for their beautiful abode? Send us an email to chlarimer@gmail.com for more details! Moore Gloria and Mark Moore moved to Lake Vista in August 1997. They purchased a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 1 story ranch style home that needed a lot of TLC. After several years of remodeling, they finally completed the kitchen and bathroom renovations. Then in 2005, Katrina hit and pretty much destroyed everything they renovated. The original house was built in 1959 and had no pilings. They hired a structural engineer who recommended that they tear down and rebuild with pilings since the concrete slab was severely compromised by the flood waters. Mark and Gloria designed the home together and hired an architect to put their ideas on paper. Their new house has the identical footprint as their old house and the result is a unique contemporary home with just under 3000 square feet custom fitted to the couple’s personal tastes. In December 2007 they moved in to their newly built home. The stained and concrete floors cover the entire downstairs. “The floors are perfect for us since we have three dogs and an umbrel- la cockatoo, and it really makes cleaning easier” says Gloria. In keeping with the desire to have an open floor plan, the dining room is tucked into a corner on the front of the house, where it’s very much a part of the large entertaining space, yet unobtru- sive. The kitchen is a 19-foot long galley style that is extremely efficient and provides plenty of space. “We have the perfect floorplan for our lifestyle with a unique wrap-around deck, a pool and patio” says Gloria. Mark’s favorite feature of the house is the upstairs terrace that wraps around three sides of the house. “I know it was an extravagance to build such a sturdy steel and concrete terrace. In the end, I’m happy we included it since it gives us such a great view of the downtown skyline and City Park (it’s our Central Park), and it allows us to step out of our master bedroom and enjoy the view of our pool, the garden and Lake Vista’s Foliage Park.” The couple agrees that the ill wind of Katrina was hard to face at first. However, they both feel that they made something good out of a bad situation and ended up with their dream home in what they consider the most unique neighborhood in New Orleans, Lake Vista. home of the month Submitted by Gloria Moore Gloria & Mark For experience, knowledge and service.... 26 27The Vista• November 2016 November 2016 • The Vista kids 2 kids What If? By Gigi Halpern What if my dog can really understand me? My mom recently recommended a good book to me called by Garth Stein. The book is still on my to-do list, but she mentioned that it was completely told from the point of view of a dog. That got me thinking. Should one watch what one says and does around their dog? In my opinion, we should be careful about what we say or do around any dog because it's possible that dogs do have feelings. Evidence of their feelings are in their personalities. Like humans, dogs often display a variety of emotions and behaviors. For example, they can be curious, playful, or very aggressive. Most dogs are curious when they see a new face. Our lab, Ruby, sits by the door in a depression until my brother returns. My family and I all joke that she suffers from separation anxiety. Sometimes, dogs can play roughly and get into fights with other dogs. Some might call it instinct, but it could simply be that this is a part of their personalities. Equally important, dogs can communicate with us. Would they be able to do that if they didn't understand us? They may not have a voice, but they sure can let us know when they want to go outside, for example, by a bark or a scratch at the door. Likewise, they nudge you or bring you a toy to notify you that they want to play. My own dog, a hyperactive chihuahua, runs to greet me every day when I get home from school, letting me know he is happy to see me. It's no wonder, then, that dogs make such great companions. If they were not capable of understanding us, how could they be such good friends to us? They always seem to know how we are feeling. They want to make us happy if we are feeling sad. Dogs will jog with you, play ball with you, rest with you, even watch TV with you... simply to be near you! They can sense our feelings and our love for them. Even when they are uncared for, they seem to have unconditional love for us. All of the above considered, the next time you look into your dog's eyes, look deeply. Pay attention to what they do. Talk to them, observe them, listen to them. It is said that the eyes are the windows to one's soul. Maybe dogs have more of a soul than you imagine. How else could they be "man's best friend"? Let us feature your work in the community newsletter. Participation is fun and easy. Send us an email at Teahnna. Donaubauer@n2pub.com. Jessica Perilloux, owner of Lakeview Creative Arts (LCA), has been helping preschoolers through college students find their passion since 2004. She started as co-director of Shining Stars School of Dance in Lake Vista, but when they closed after Hurri- cane Katrina, she opened LCA in 2006. Even after earning her Bachelor of Arts in Business from Loyola University and her MBA from Kaplan University, Jessica was not always certain of her path. Although her impressive resume includes dancing in film and theater as well as instructing many dance styles, she decided to focus on the younger generation. "I think it's important that we, and especially our children, find out what we are good at and enjoy doing. Personally, I love dance. It makes me feel more alive than anything else. I am so lucky to be fulfilled every day by a job that I love," she explained. LCA has something for everyone, with programs in dance as well martial arts, gymnastics and holiday mini art camps. With 140 children attending classes weekly, some even participate in mul- tiple programs. A unique class is their “creative movement” for children as young as 12 months old, focusing on teaching basic motor skills, beginning tumble, and tap. Starting at age 2, chil- dren can learn a variety of dance styles (Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical, Musical Theater and Hip Hop) in an encouraging and supportive environment. And for teens and young adults interested in taking the best hip hop class in New Orleans, they can find it right at LCA taught by Josh Eddington. It is Jessica Perilloux’s philosophy that children are our future and through encouragement and focus, they can each achieve fantastic heights. But dance is not the only creative way that children can find their passion through movement. LCA offers a variety of gymnastics classes for the beginner acrobat as well as the more advanced tumbler. A beginner cheerleading class is also available for those 5-10 year olds who really want to learn basic cheer skills and tumbling. And their martial arts pro- gram, taught by Master Tyler Hosch, teaches students self-discipline and socialization while incorporating fit- ness and concentration in TaeKwonDo classes for ages 3 and up. “I love that we are in the center of the neighborhood and have so much to offer,” Jessica told us. “The residents of Lake Vista love their neighborhood and love to walk through it. They know one another, and they know each other’s families. It’s a great commu- nity to be a part of.” All of the LCA staff has worked there for 2 or more years. “We are like a family here. My office manager, Elizabeth Steigman, and I were friends at Mt Carmel (and both Pink Panthers) and her daughter Adele has been coming here for three years. Because the neighborhood is safe, children can ride their bikes here. Some of the kids have been with us since we opened, and it has been so wonderful to watch them grow,” she said.passion Teaching to find their LUNDY RYAN DESIGN • Residential • Commercial • Marine • Interior • Exterior • Monogramming • Upholstery • Chalk painting Phone: 504-228-2428 Fax: 504-218-7792 Email: lundy@lundyryandesign.com Web: lundyryandesign.com Love Your Home. He then went on to be- come a six-time member of the U.S. National Team, a three-time national champion and was USA International Three-Meter Synchro Champion in 2000. Chris explained to us why he chose coaching as a profession, “Because of my competitive side as an athlete, I enjoy watching the success of others. I have always loved watching the expres- sion on someone’s face change when he or she does something they didn’t know they were capable of doing. It is so rewarding to watch. I spent my life coaching because it is the one area where I am truly confident that I know what I am doing – right down to the core to my existence”. A native of Allentown, Pennsylvania Chris has lived in Lake Vista with his wife, Liz, since 2006. They met in Ft. Lauderdale while Chris was training for the nationals. Liz, who is from New Orle- ans, was living with her sister and met Chris while dropping off her niece and nephew at their diving lessons. The rest, as they say, was history. After they married, the Devines moved to California and then North Carolina to follow Chris’ diving career. But when Liz’s mother called to let Chris know that Tulane was looking for a div- ing coach, they both were excited about the possibility of moving to New Orleans. “Aiden was 10 months old and I remember flying in for the interview with his head on my lap. Then, two months later, I started my job at Tulane on Aiden’s first birthday,” Chris said. Liz, who grew up in Lakeview, wanted to look at houses by the lake- front first. When they found their house on Warbler, they knew it was home. “Lake Vista has been a wonderful place to raise our four boys. From helping 21 athletes qualify for Junior Olympic Zone Championships while at Mission Viejo Nadadores to seeing eight of his team reach the 2004 North Carolina High School State Championships, he is all about having them live up to their potential. “Many people don’t get to see that amazing transformation that takes place after an athlete puts in countless of hours. As a coach, when you go home and put your head on your pillow, that is the part that make you smile,” he said. It also makes Chris smile to teach his sons, who are into soccer and baseball, the basics of movement control and fitness so that they can fine tune their athletic skills. A true leader who this year has become President of St. Pius X Men’s Club, Chris is thrilled to have the opportunity to touch more lives in a positive way. “What I love about our men’s club is that out of 400 mem- bers on list, about 150 actively participate,” he explained. “There is a great blend in our group, one third are 1st and 2nd year mem- bers, one third have been members for 5-10 years and the rest no longer have children but still come for the fellowship”. The Men’s Club just held its annual Halloween Fest & Haunted House, their biggest fundraising event. “This annual event raises enough money to support our group year round and lets us help the par- ish on a monthly basis with a variety of needs. It is a triple win because we get to help the parish, make friends and have fun in the process,” he said. in many places because of my diving career, and this place is really special.” As Chief Information Officer of a global credit reporting business, Liz began to travel more. So, after Chris led the Tulane Swimming and Diving Team to a Conference USA title in 2005, he took time off to help raise their family. “We wanted to make sure one of us would be home in the afternoon to pick up our boys from school so I decided to become a stay-at-home dad.” he said. Then one day Chris was out looking for place to get his four boys haircuts and couldn’t find one without a long wait. So in 2012, Chris and Liz became owners of a Sports Clips franchise. “Sport Clips is like an old-time barbershop but has T.V’s playing sports at each station. I loved the concept so we bought in. It’s a great posi- tive atmosphere for men and makes getting a haircut fun,” he said. In 2013 Chris re-joined Tulane as the Head Diving Coach. “I missed coaching because it’s not just about diving. When I see an 18 year old on his or her first day with eyes wide open, scared of life and then watch as that athlete grows athletically, academ- ically and emotionally, it is incredible.” Before Tulane, Chris had From his first job in 1994 as assistant coach at Penn State Diving Camp to his current role as head diving coach at Tulane University, Chris Devine, has made a difference by inspiring hundreds of young divers to do their best. 32 33The Vista• November 2016 November 2016 • The Vista home matters By N2 Staff Writer, Megan Weatherly Lynn thoroughly paint all grooves and cabinet details, without using too much paint. Thin coats of paint will dry more quickly and show fewer brushstrokes. Allow each coat to dry for about four hours before sanding and beginning the next coat. Two or three coats of paint should cover your cabinets well. finish After all parts and pieces have had ample time to dry, reattach all doors and drawers according to the labels you attached in the beginning. For a truly fresh look, add updated drawer pulls and knobs. Once your kitchen is reassembled, sit back and enjoy what is sure to feel like a brand new kitchen! Want to update your kitchen without taking on a full-blown remodel? A little bit of paint can go a long way, especially when it comes to your kitchen cabinets. You can quickly and inexpensively change the look of your entire kitchen by following these steps. How To Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets research First of all, decide on the color and finish you want. Are you going from natural wood to painted wood? From white, painted cabinets to dual-tone upper and lower cabinets? Find inspiration photos online, and then make an appointment to visit your local paint store for some in-person advice. A paint expert can help you de- termine the right colors and type of paint for your specific needs. prep The key to any successful painting project is taking the time to properly prepare the surface. You’ll first want to cover any adjacent countertops and flooring. Remove doors and hardware, and label each piece with a number corresponding to the space it belongs in. Clean the surface of your cabinet drawers, doors and boxes to remove any built up dirt and grime. A degreaser should do the trick. Fill any gouges or holes with wood putty. Then, with a very fine-grit sandpaper, thoroughly sand the surface of your cabinets. prime Prime all surfaces with a high-quality sandable primer. A sand- able primer will fill in any exposed wood grain, while still allow- ing you to sand the surface smooth. Paint your interior panels before painting the rails and stiles, and keep flat to avoid drip- ping paint. You may need at least two coats of primer to ensure a smooth-finished surface. Paint against the grain on your first coat, and with the grain on the second. After the painted surfaces have dried for several hours, sand away any visible brush strokes with a medium-grit sandpaper, and then a fine-grit sandpaper. Vacuum any remaining dust. paint With all surfaces laid flat, begin by painting edges, openings and sides, then paint the faces of your doors and drawers. Be sure to makeover cabinet Spend leSS than Your MonthlY earningS Spending less than what you earn is an easy principle in theory, but can be challenging in reality. Calculate your monthly expen- ditures and track where each penny in your pocket goes. If you’re not using a budget, implement one for your family. Once you mas- ter this money-saving method, increase your savings to at least 10%, build your emergency fund to stash away six months’ worth of living expenses, and work on your investment portfolio. reduce deBt If you’re in debt, get out of it. Eradicating 100% of your debt is the goal, but even reducing debt can be a step in the right direction. Almost 40% of Americans carry some sort of credit card debt, which causes them to fork over funds for interest each month. Reduce or eliminate your credit card debt to increase your credit score, which is critical for securing a mortgage with optimal rates. Swipe leSS Consumers spend more using plastic – consider it the cost of con- venience. It has been documented that people spend 12-18% more when using credit cards. The average bill for McDonald’s is $7.00 when using a credit card versus $4.50 with cash. Even those who pay off their balance faithfully each month end up paying more in the long run. So think twice before you swipe. Don’t let another year go by wondering where all the money went. Build a budget for the New Year and create financial stabil- ity in the process. The NewYear is a chance to start over, assess your priorities and plan accordingly. Don’t leave your budget out of the equation. Simply tracking expenses can be an effective tool that penny pinchers and thriving entrepreneurs can all use. Knowing where the money goes can be instrumental in tapping into better financial health. 34 35The Vista• November 2016 November 2016 • The Vista With excessive calories and holiday stress, blood pressure can inevitably rise over the holidays. For- tunately, with a few tips, you’ll be able to reduce your blood pressure over the holidays – naturally! THiNk FOOd + FiTNess Don’t digest Thanksgiving dinner without a Thanksgiving stroll. Sign up for the Turkey Trot! Create a calorie burn on this holi- day known for pigging out – and do your blood pressure a favor in the process. Simply getting your body into motion by walking can lower your blood pressure. Don’t be a couch potato over the holidays. Get up, get moving (even if that means playing Poke- mon Go or holiday shopping) and do your body a favor. Don’t underestimate the power of fitness. Even a brisk 20-minute walk several times per week can lower blood pressure. Shed- ding a few extra pounds or a few inches off your waistline is helpful in reducing blood pressure too. dON’T OveRiNdulge Overindulgence seems to come with the holidays, but try feeding your stomach (eating when your stomach growls) rather than by force of habit. Mindful eating can cause calorie reduction, weight loss, and help you achieve better health (including your blood pressure!). Change your habits by creating a food diary. Don’t overindulge with alcohol either. Binge drinking can have a nega- tive effect on blood pressure, even causing it to rise more than 20 points. Stick to two drinks or less each day. saY NO TO salT The holidays come with all sorts of opportunities for seconds (or even thirds), but in doing so, salt intake rises, which can result in increased blood pressure readings. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2,300 milligrams per day of sodium is recommended. However, those with high blood pressure should limit their intake of salt to 1,500 milligrams per day. Shrimp, ham, and gravy pack a punch of sodium – anywhere from 480 milligrams to a whopping 650 milligrams per serving. Even that dinner roll can be a little over 218 milligrams. Exercise modera- tion and portion control. saY Yes TO BaNaNas Who says you can’t eat healthy over the holidays? Make bananas your friend; eating two bananas daily can lower blood pressure 10 points, thanks to the potassium. Not a banana fan? Chomp on dates, sip tomato juice, or even go heavy on the guacamole (with potassium-rich avocados). Don’t let your blood pressure soar over the holidays. Increase your activity level and decrease your calorie consumption and intake of sodium-rich foods. You’ll be glad you did! healthyliving Reduce Your By N2 Staff Writer, Elizabeth McCabe Over The Holidays – Naturally!
