Ann O. Laffey is a PhD student in anthropology at the University of Florida. Her primary research interests are in the prehistory of the Andes, focusing on the Moche and Wari/Tiwanaku cultures. Her dissertation project uses organic residue analysis and brewing to examine gender and agency among women in the Middle Horizon Andes. She has a MA in anthropology from UF and has received several honors and awards. Laffey has extensive teaching experience and laboratory skills in isotopic and chemical analysis relevant to her archaeological research.
Rescue and handling of Antillean manatees Trichechus manatus manatus in Venez...ConBiVe
Given the importance of the rescue and rehabilitation
of confiscated manatees from illegal traffic or accidental
fishery entanglements, the handling and transport of
two Antillean manatees Trichechus manatus manatus
in the ‘Llanos’ of Apure state in Venezuela is
described. In 1992, two ♀ calves were confiscated in
the region of Arichuna in the Apure River and transported
to a lagoon at the Fondo Nacional de Investigaciones
Agropecuarias, Biruaca, for rehabilitation. Data
about age, size, weight and haematological values were
recorded. In 1994, one of the manatees was transferred
to the Parque Zoologico y Botanico Bararida, Barquisimeto,
in order to form a breeding pair and start a
captive-breeding programme. Successful reproduction
was achieved in 2007, 2011 and 2013. In 1995, the
second ♀ Antillean manatee was released into a natural
environment in Santa Luisa Cattle Ranch, Apure state.
The confiscation, rescue, rehabilitation and transport
(by land and air) of these two ♀ Antillean manatees
were carried out satisfactorily.

Research interests
I am an anthropologist/archaeologist whose primary interest is in the prehistory of the
Andes. Two eras and three culture groups have been central to my work, the Early
Intermediate Period Moche (50-800 CE) and Middle Horizon Wari and Tiwanaku
cultures (600-1100 CE). Currently, my dissertation project involves applying my skills in
organic residue analysis and brewing to answer questions about gender and agency in
regard to women who negotiated the sociopolitical landscape of the Middle Horizon
Andes.

4. Skills Summary
I have worked in both the Center for Isotope Geoscience (CIG), Department of
Anthropology, and the Organic Geochemistry Lab (OGL), Department of Geological
Sciences, for over five years. During this time I have acquired numerous skills in relation
to chemical analyses. In the CIG I purify bone collagen and hydroxyapatite prior to
stable isotope analysis. While working in the OGL I utilize pressurized liquid extraction
to remove lipid compounds. Further, I am able to isolate numerous chemical groups via
saponification, esterification, and column extraction. Once processed, I can quantify and
identify using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. For compound-specific stable
isotopic analysis I use gas chromatography irradiation/mass spectrometry.
