The presents are delivered by a kind ugly witch called Befana on Epiphany, January 6th in Italy according to tradition. It is said that Befana was told about Jesus' birth but got delayed and missed seeing him, losing her way as she followed the star. Ever since, she flies around leaving presents for children, putting coal for bad children and gifts for good children down chimneys and in stockings. Many children believe Befana is Santa's wife who helps him deliver presents after Christmas since he is too busy.
