Dear Reader,
Our summer auctions saw active bidding by more than 1 000 clients from
48 countries, leading to impressive hammer prices, many far exceeding
pre-sale estimates. Six results above the million mark and more than fifty
in the six-figure range, in addition to several auction records for individual
artists, are evidence of a strong market as well as our excellent international
standing in multiple collecting categories.
During the first half of the year, the departments of Old Master Paintings,
Swiss Art, Impressionist & Modern Art and Asian Art all recorded seven-
figure prices, including 2.44 million francs realised for a study by Anthony
van Dyck this spring. In addition, there were strong results for a Burma ruby
ring (CHF 810 000), a rare Rolex watch (CHF 626 000) and two world records
for colour screenprints by Andy Warhol (Volkswagen, CHF 110 000, and
Pine Barrens Tree Frog, CHF 104 000).

Goethe’s words ‘Would you roam forever onward? See the good that lies
so near’ may be a bit clichéd, but they are no less true for that – also when
applied to the consignment strategies of many art owners.
Starting on page 8, we present highlights of our upcoming auctions
of Old Masters and Decorative Arts, to be held from 29 September
to 1 October. In December, our auction programme will again include
modern and contemporary art, Asian art, jewellery and wristwatches.
We are happy to accept consignments to these auctions until the end
of September.
Yours,
Cyril Koller

A family influences an era
Four generations of the Brueghel dynasty of
painters left their mark on the history of Flemish
art. The progenitor, Pieter Brueghel the Elder (circa
1526/30–1569), was active in Antwerp and Brussels.
His allegorical narrative paintings and depictions of
rural life, often richly populated with figures, played a
major role in shaping our image of the 16th
century.
Pieter was the father of two sons: Pieter Brueghel the
Younger (1564–1638) and Jan Brueghel (1568–1625),
later called the Elder. While the first-born Pieter
followed in his father’s footsteps, taking over his
workshop and closely imitating his style, Jan became
an innovator and a style-setting pioneer of Flemish
Baroque painting, primarily through his lifelike still lifes
and realistic landscapes. In the third generation, Jan
the Elder’s sons Jan Brueghel the Younger (1601–
1678) and Ambrosius Brueghel (1617–1675) ably
carried on the family tradition. The fourth generation
produced five more painters, but none matched the
artistic brilliance of their predecessors.
Three works by the Brueghels will be offered in the Old
Master Paintings auction: a large-format depiction
of John the Baptist preaching in the midst of a large
crowd, by Pieter the Younger based on the pictorial
repertoire of his father; an ‘Allegory of Hearing’ by
Jan Brueghel the Younger, and an atmospheric river
landscape by Jan Brueghel the Elder.
Jan Brueghel the Elder also regularly collaborated with
other artists. In several works by Peter Paul Rubens, he
was responsible for the floral decoration. The painting
illustrated on the cover of this issue was also created
in collaboration with a fellow painter: the landscape is
by Joos de Momper, and the figures by Jan Brueghel
the Elder.

private collection. Bernardo Bellotto, who

painted first in his native Italy and later in
Dresden under the aegis of the Saxon
elector Frederick Augustus II. During his
time in Munich in the 1760s, the artist

Cornelis Bega
Bega grew up surrounded by art and artists, and was listed as a member of the Haarlem
painters’ guild beginning in 1654. He is known for outstanding colouration and sublime
brushwork. The woman depicted here modelled for several of Bega’s paintings. She is
shown holding a glass and wearing an open jacket – the latter indicates her status as a
courtesan. The small table in the foreground and the majolica jug also appear in other works
by Bega. This excellent portrait has a noble provenance, having belonged to Pierre Marquis
de Colbert (1834–1905), owner of the Château du Saussay, located south of Paris. In 1911,
the property passed from his daughter to the Bourbon-Busset family, who still occupy the
stately castle today.

Govaert Flinck
Goevart Flinck was one of the most talented artists of Rembrandt’s circle in
Amsterdam. He was Rembrandt’s pupil in 1635–36 and then established his own
studio. He adapted the style of his master with virtuosity, also including the ‘tronie’
in his repertoire: a form of portrait that is not a realistic representation of a specific
model, but rather exemplifies a character type. This bearded old man incorporates
idealised images from biblical history and, although not identified by any attributes,
might represent one of the prophets. Apparently Rembrandt, Flinck and other
painters in their circle used the same model, who can be recognised in various
paintings. At the same time, this work from Flinck’s late period, with a loosely fluid
brushstroke, represents the artist’s increasing detachment from the style of his
famous teacher.
Govaert Flinck (1615–1660). Tronie of a bearded man. 1650. Oil on canvas.
61.5 × 50.7 cm. Estimate: CHF 700 000/900 000

Early porcelain
Our autumn Decorative Arts Auction offers
porcelain from the early years of the Meissen
manufactory circa 1710–1713, such as a tankard
and a pilgrim flask in Böttger stoneware, and an
early Böttger porcelain teapot. A small collection
of various Meissen animals from the 18th
century,
comprisingmorethan20pieces,providesaglimpse
into the diversity of animal figures produced in the
valley of the Elbe: from exotic animals including
a pair of lions on gilded bronze pedestals and a
series of parrots, to magnificently moulded and
painted figures of indigenous wildlife, and a rare
early depiction of a cat. This exquisite potpourri of
unusual porcelain figures reflects the extravagant
courtly life in Saxony at a time when the display of
exotic animals was a royal passion.
Precious ivory objects
A collection of circa 70 carved ivory items features mainly German and
French works from the 19th
-century Historicist period, many of which
were made in the great ivory-carving centres of Dieppe and Erbach.
An outstanding Historicist Viennese tankard is particularly noteworthy:
the silver mount bears the master mark of the Court and Chamber
goldsmith Christian Friedrich Rothe (1817–1892); the ivory
carving is probably by Anton Dominik von Fernkorn
(1813–1878). Also featured is a large presentation
platter with mount, made in Germany circa 1860/80,
decorated with mythological motifs.

Weapons steeped in history
Around 100 antique firearms, cut and thrust weapons,
polearms and armour from the 16th
to 19th
centuries
consigned from various Swiss private collections will
be featured in the 30 September auction. The lots
were all examined and catalogued with the assistance
of the renowned expert on historical weapons Jürg A.
Meier. Featured are a Russian-Caucasian ceremonial
sabre from the end of the 19th
century, a pair of
percussion pistols produced in Paris in the mid-19th
century,aswellasararecompletelypreservedGerman
iron suit of armour from circa 1580. Such armour was
producedfromthe14th
centuryonwardsbyspecialised
blacksmiths known as ‘Plattner’. Afterwards, artisans
called ‘Harnischfeger’ polished and decorated the
protective armour. Not only knights, but horses and
even elephants used in battles sported plate armour.
An exceptionally rare piece in the sale is the hinged
‘Klappvisier’ visor for a type of bascinet helmet known
as a ‘Hundsgugel’, worn by the Austrians at the Battle
of Sempach in 1386. Such characteristic bascinets
can be seen in pictorial representations such as the
famous ‘Lucerne Chronicle’ by Diebold Schilling the
Younger, 1513.

Eugène Louis Boudin
Boudin, who belonged to the first generation of plein air
painters, excelled in depicting seascapes and the daily
lives of fishermen. He often chose to paint his homeland
of Normandy between Dieppe and Cherbourg, with its
picturesque rocky coast. Corot referred to Boudin as
the ‘king of the sky’ because of the atmospheric cloud
formations in his paintings. Boudin’s last wish was to die
with a view of the sea, which he was granted in Deauville in
1898. The harbour scene offered in our autumn auction
of 19th
Century Paintings was created in the fashionable
seaside resort of Trouville, which, like many other coastal
towns in Normandy, was a popular destination for the
Parisian haute bourgeoisie and the British upper class
from the mid-19th
century through the Belle Époque.
Eugène Louis Boudin (1824–1898). Trouville. Les jetées.
Marée haute. 1894. Oil on panel. 32 × 41 cm.
Estimate: CHF 60 000/80 000
Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot
This painting is a characteristic example of Corot’s landscapes and
those of the Barbizon School, which he helped shape. Corot made
plein air studies during several trips to Italy, later completing them in
his studio. His ability to reproduce light and atmosphere as defining
elements formed the basis of a new understanding of landscape
painting and the emergence of Impressionism. Corot subsequently
influenced numerous French artists. His fellow painter Louis Car
bonnel famously said: ‘Without Corot there would be neither Gadan
nor Carbonnel. There would be no light’.
Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (1796–1875). Le Chevrier (Souvenir d’Italie).
1872. Oil on canvas. 65.5 × 81.2 cm. Estimate: CHF 80 000/120 000
Paul Désiré Trouillebert
Trouillebert’s paysages intimes, like this one, fit seamlessly into the
pre-impressionist currents surrounding the Barbizon school. His
stylistic closeness to Corot is apparent in the subjects Trouillebert
painted, elegiac river and alluvial landscapes. Here we can see
the artists’ direct approach to nature, devoid of any idealisation.
They both devoted their attention to rendering the most delicate
expressions of nature, light and air, sky and water in their very own
materiality.
Paul Désiré Trouillebert (1829–1900). Le faucheur et un rameur sur la
rivière. Oil on canvas. 85 × 113.5 cm. Estimate: CHF 30 000/40 000
13
Carl Spitzweg
Spitzweg’s empathic powers of observation are reflected in his anecdotal-
narrative subjects. The artist succeeds in capturing the oddity and
idiosyncrasy of his sitters in an individual yet sympathetic way, without
mockery.TheviewerisdrawntowardsSpitzweg’sprotagonistsandattached
to their fate. The experienced artist captures the breezy atmosphere in a
quick, almost fleeting style and in a small format. For all the humour in his
subjects, Spitzweg remained a precise and often critical observer of his
Biedermeier-influenced, sometimes eccentric time.
Franz Xaver Winterhalter
Grand Duke Leopold I of Baden and the French King Louis-Philippe sponsored
the German artist Winterhalter, and for decades he was considered the most
renowned portraitist in Europe. His career in France was punctuated by stays at
the English and later at the Spanish court. His clients came from royal families
and courtly circles from St Petersburg to Lisbon. This portrait of a young lady was
always titled ‘The American Girl’; according to tradition, it is Winterhalter’s fiancée,
whom he painted in Paris in 1868/69.
Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805–1873). The beautiful American. Circa 1868–1869.
Oil on canvas. 115 × 88 cm (oval). Estimate: CHF 30 000/40 000

Rembrandt: a genius on the brink
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was the shining
light of European Baroque painting in the ‘Golden
Age’ and is practically considered the patron saint
of the Netherlands today, but when he died on 4
October 1669, aged 63, he was utterly impoverished,
deprived of the splendour of his finest years.
The rise of Rembrandt – painter, draughtsman and
engraver – was inextricably linked with his move to
Amsterdam around 1631/32 and thus to the centre
ofDutchartofthatera.Hismarriagein1634toSaskia
van Uylenburgh, who came from a wealthy patrician
family, enabled him to run his own master workshop.
But Saskia’s family soon took issue with what they
saw as the artist’s lavish spending. Not only did he live
in grand style, but also amassed a veritable ‘cabinet
of curiosities’ with hundreds of exotic natural rarities
and works of art.
Saskia died in 1642 at the age of 29, and in May 1656
Rembrandt signed his residence over to his son
Titus. Shortly afterwards, his insolvency became
official and a two-year forced sale of his assets,
especially his art collection, ensued – at a time
when the overheated art market was experiencing
a severe downturn. The broadsheet offered in our
September auction, which announces the auction of
Rembrandt’s possessions, is a central and extremely
rare document concerning the bankruptcy of the
famous artist. Only one other copy of this historic
notice is known; it is in the collection of the British
Museum in London (shelfmark: 1857,0613.990).
The broadsheet announces ‘outstanding art on
paper’ as well as the remaining part of his collection
‘of the foremost Italian, French, Dutch and German
masters’, and notes that the artist had gathered

these together ‘with a great deal of curiosity’.
In addition, ‘a good portion’ of the drawings and
sketches were by Rembrandt himself. The time of
the auction, which was to take place at Barent Janzs
Schuurman’s, the landlord of the Kaiserkrone inn on
Amsterdam’s Kalverstraat, is not precisely known:
‘The sale will take place on the date, at the hour and
in the year stated above’. What this ‘above’ refers to
is unclear. As early as December 1655, Rembrandt
had rented a room in the Kaiserkrone inn and offered
some of his possessions for sale there, to which the
present sheet apparently also refers (‘where the
previous sale was held’).
‘The profit made was a bitter disappointment, the
first of many to follow in the difficult years ahead.
Ruin showed its grimace to him.’ (Simon Schama,
Rembrandts Augen, Berlin 1999, p. 597).

2 Dear Reader, Our summerauctions saw active bidding by more than 1 000 clients from 48 countries, leading to impressive hammer prices, many far exceeding pre-sale estimates. Six results above the million mark and more than fifty in the six-figure range, in addition to several auction records for individual artists, are evidence of a strong market as well as our excellent international standing in multiple collecting categories. During the first half of the year, the departments of Old Master Paintings, Swiss Art, Impressionist & Modern Art and Asian Art all recorded seven- figure prices, including 2.44 million francs realised for a study by Anthony van Dyck this spring. In addition, there were strong results for a Burma ruby ring (CHF 810 000), a rare Rolex watch (CHF 626 000) and two world records for colour screenprints by Andy Warhol (Volkswagen, CHF 110 000, and Pine Barrens Tree Frog, CHF 104 000). Goethe’s words ‘Would you roam forever onward? Starting on page 8, we present highlights of our upcoming auctions of Old Masters and Decorative Arts, to be held from 29 September to 1 October. In December, our auction programme will again include modern and contemporary art, Asian art, jewellery and wristwatches. 8 Preview of theOld Master Paintings auction on 1 October 2021 A family influences an era Four generations of the Brueghel dynasty of painters left their mark on the history of Flemish art. The progenitor, Pieter Brueghel the Elder (circa 1526/30–1569), was active in Antwerp and Brussels. His allegorical narrative paintings and depictions of rural life, often richly populated with figures, played a major role in shaping our image of the 16th century. Pieter was the father of two sons: Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564–1638) and Jan Brueghel (1568–1625), later called the Elder. While the first-born Pieter followed in his father’s footsteps, taking over his workshop and closely imitating his style, Jan became an innovator and a style-setting pioneer of Flemish Baroque painting, primarily through his lifelike still lifes and realistic landscapes. In the third generation, Jan the Elder’s sons Jan Brueghel the Younger (1601– 1678) and Ambrosius Brueghel (1617–1675) ably carried on the family tradition. The fourth generation produced five more painters, but none matched the artistic brilliance of their predecessors. Three works by the Brueghels will be offered in the Old Master Paintings auction: a large-format depiction of John the Baptist preaching in the midst of a large crowd, by Pieter the Younger based on the pictorial repertoire of his father; an ‘Allegory of Hearing’ by Jan Brueghel the Younger, and an atmospheric river landscape by Jan Brueghel the Elder. Jan Brueghel the Elder also regularly collaborated with other artists. In several works by Peter Paul Rubens, he was responsible for the floral decoration. The painting illustrated on the cover of this issue was also created in collaboration with a fellow painter: the landscape is by Joos de Momper, and the figures by Jan Brueghel the Elder. 1 2 3 1 Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564–1638). 9 Bernardo Bellotto This rareview of Munich as seen from Gasteig hill was recently rediscovered in a private collection. Bernardo Bellotto, who workedunderthenameCanalettolikehis famous uncle, Giovanni Antonio Canal, painted first in his native Italy and later in Dresden under the aegis of the Saxon elector Frederick Augustus II. During his time in Munich in the 1760s, the artist painted several city views commissioned byMaximilianIIIJoseph,ElectorofBavaria. Bernardo Bellotto, called Canaletto (1722–1780), and Lorenzo Bellotto (1744–1770). View of Munich from the east. Circa 1762–1767. Oil on canvas. 69 × 119 cm. Estimate on request Cornelis Bega Bega grew up surrounded by art and artists, and was listed as a member of the Haarlem painters’ guild beginning in 1654. He is known for outstanding colouration and sublime brushwork. The woman depicted here modelled for several of Bega’s paintings. She is shown holding a glass and wearing an open jacket – the latter indicates her status as a courtesan. The small table in the foreground and the majolica jug also appear in other works by Bega. This excellent portrait has a noble provenance, having belonged to Pierre Marquis de Colbert (1834–1905), owner of the Château du Saussay, located south of Paris. In 1911, the property passed from his daughter to the Bourbon-Busset family, who still occupy the stately castle today. Cornelis Bega (1631/32–1664). Young woman in an interior, holding a glass of wine. Oil on canvas. 26.7 × 22.2 cm. Estimate: CHF 150 000/200 000 Govaert Flinck Goevart Flinck was one of the most talented artists of Rembrandt’s circle in Amsterdam. He was Rembrandt’s pupil in 1635–36 and then established his own studio. He adapted the style of his master with virtuosity, also including the ‘tronie’ in his repertoire: a form of portrait that is not a realistic representation of a specific model, but rather exemplifies a character type. This bearded old man incorporates idealised images from biblical history and, although not identified by any attributes, might represent one of the prophets. Apparently Rembrandt, Flinck and other painters in their circle used the same model, who can be recognised in various paintings. At the same time, this work from Flinck’s late period, with a loosely fluid brushstroke, represents the artist’s increasing detachment from the style of his famous teacher. Govaert Flinck (1615–1660). Tronie of a bearded man. 1650. Oil on canvas. 61.5 × 50.7 cm. A small collection of various Meissen animals from the 18th century, comprisingmorethan20pieces,providesaglimpse into the diversity of animal figures produced in the valley of the Elbe: from exotic animals including a pair of lions on gilded bronze pedestals and a series of parrots, to magnificently moulded and painted figures of indigenous wildlife, and a rare early depiction of a cat. This exquisite potpourri of unusual porcelain figures reflects the extravagant courtly life in Saxony at a time when the display of exotic animals was a royal passion. Precious ivory objects A collection of circa 70 carved ivory items features mainly German and French works from the 19th -century Historicist period, many of which were made in the great ivory-carving centres of Dieppe and Erbach. An outstanding Historicist Viennese tankard is particularly noteworthy: the silver mount bears the master mark of the Court and Chamber goldsmith Christian Friedrich Rothe (1817–1892); the ivory carving is probably by Anton Dominik von Fernkorn (1813–1878). Also featured is a large presentation platter with mount, made in Germany circa 1860/80, decorated with mythological motifs.

12 Eugène Louis Boudin Boudin, who belonged to the first generation of plein air painters, excelled in depicting seascapes and the daily lives of fishermen. He often chose to paint his homeland of Normandy between Dieppe and Cherbourg, with its picturesque rocky coast. Corot referred to Boudin as the ‘king of the sky’ because of the atmospheric cloud formations in his paintings. Boudin’s last wish was to die with a view of the sea, which he was granted in Deauville in 1898. The harbour scene offered in our autumn auction of 19th Century Paintings was created in the fashionable seaside resort of Trouville, which, like many other coastal towns in Normandy, was a popular destination for the Parisian haute bourgeoisie and the British upper class from the mid-19th century through the Belle Époque. Eugène Louis Boudin (1824–1898). Trouville. Les jetées. Marée haute. 1894. Oil on panel. 32 × 41 cm. Estimate: CHF 60 000/80 000 Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot This painting is a characteristic example of Corot’s landscapes and those of the Barbizon School, which he helped shape. Corot made plein air studies during several trips to Italy, later completing them in his studio. His ability to reproduce light and atmosphere as defining elements formed the basis of a new understanding of landscape painting and the emergence of Impressionism. Corot subsequently influenced numerous French artists. His fellow painter Louis Car bonnel famously said: ‘Without Corot there would be neither Gadan nor Carbonnel. There would be no light’. Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (1796–1875). Le Chevrier (Souvenir d’Italie). 1872. Oil on canvas. 65.5 × 81.2 cm. Estimate: CHF 80 000/120 000 Paul Désiré Trouillebert Trouillebert’s paysages intimes, like this one, fit seamlessly into the pre-impressionist currents surrounding the Barbizon school. His stylistic closeness to Corot is apparent in the subjects Trouillebert painted, elegiac river and alluvial landscapes. Here we can see the artists’ direct approach to nature, devoid of any idealisation. They both devoted their attention to rendering the most delicate expressions of nature, light and air, sky and water in their very own materiality. Paul Désiré Trouillebert (1829–1900). Le faucheur et un rameur sur la rivière. Oil on canvas. 85 × 113.5 cm. Estimate: CHF 30 000/40 000

13 Carl Spitzweg Spitzweg’s empathicpowers of observation are reflected in his anecdotal- narrative subjects. The artist succeeds in capturing the oddity and idiosyncrasy of his sitters in an individual yet sympathetic way, without mockery.TheviewerisdrawntowardsSpitzweg’sprotagonistsandattached to their fate. The experienced artist captures the breezy atmosphere in a quick, almost fleeting style and in a small format. For all the humour in his subjects, Spitzweg remained a precise and often critical observer of his Biedermeier-influenced, sometimes eccentric time. Franz Xaver Winterhalter Grand Duke Leopold I of Baden and the French King Louis-Philippe sponsored the German artist Winterhalter, and for decades he was considered the most renowned portraitist in Europe. His career in France was punctuated by stays at the English and later at the Spanish court. His clients came from royal families and courtly circles from St Petersburg to Lisbon. This portrait of a young lady was always titled ‘The American Girl’; according to tradition, it is Winterhalter’s fiancée, whom he painted in Paris in 1868/69. Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805–1873). 14 14 Preview of theBooks Autographs auction on 29 September 2021 Rembrandt: a genius on the brink Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was the shining light of European Baroque painting in the ‘Golden Age’ and is practically considered the patron saint of the Netherlands today, but when he died on 4 October 1669, aged 63, he was utterly impoverished, deprived of the splendour of his finest years. The rise of Rembrandt – painter, draughtsman and engraver – was inextricably linked with his move to Amsterdam around 1631/32 and thus to the centre ofDutchartofthatera.Hismarriagein1634toSaskia van Uylenburgh, who came from a wealthy patrician family, enabled him to run his own master workshop. But Saskia’s family soon took issue with what they saw as the artist’s lavish spending. Not only did he live in grand style, but also amassed a veritable ‘cabinet of curiosities’ with hundreds of exotic natural rarities and works of art. Saskia died in 1642 at the age of 29, and in May 1656 Rembrandt signed his residence over to his son Titus. Shortly afterwards, his insolvency became official and a two-year forced sale of his assets, especially his art collection, ensued – at a time when the overheated art market was experiencing a severe downturn. The broadsheet offered in our September auction, which announces the auction of Rembrandt’s possessions, is a central and extremely rare document concerning the bankruptcy of the famous artist. Only one other copy of this historic notice is known; it is in the collection of the British Museum in London (shelfmark: 1857,0613.990). The broadsheet announces ‘outstanding art on paper’ as well as the remaining part of his collection ‘of the foremost Italian, French, Dutch and German masters’, and notes that the artist had gathered FOR FURTHER INFORMATION BOOKS AUTOGRAPHS Dr Andreas Terwey terwey@kollerauctions.com ONLINE CATALOGUES www.kollerauctions.com 1 Déscription du Sacre et du Couronnement de leurs Majestés Impériales l’Empereur Alexandre II et l’Impératrice Marie Alexandrovna. In addition, ‘a good portion’ of the drawings and sketches were by Rembrandt himself. The time of the auction, which was to take place at Barent Janzs Schuurman’s, the landlord of the Kaiserkrone inn on Amsterdam’s Kalverstraat, is not precisely known: ‘The sale will take place on the date, at the hour and in the year stated above’. What this ‘above’ refers to is unclear. As early as December 1655, Rembrandt had rented a room in the Kaiserkrone inn and offered some of his possessions for sale there, to which the present sheet apparently also refers (‘where the previous sale was held’). ‘The profit made was a bitter disappointment, the first of many to follow in the difficult years ahead. Ruin showed its grimace to him.’ (Simon Schama, Rembrandts Augen, Berlin 1999, p. 597).
