Australian speed expert The Indian
Premier League (IPL) saw Kolkata
Knight Riders defeat Lucknow Super
Giants by eight wickets on Sunday at
Eden Gardens. Mitchell Starc finally lived
up to his expensive price tag with a
three-wicket haul, and Phil Salt struck an
incredible half-century.
To delight its supporters on Bengali New
Year, KKR restricted LSG, who found
solace at home by dressing in the green-
and-maroon colors of city-based sibling
company Mohun Bagan, to 161 for
seven.
2. KKR vs LSG : Knight Riders beat
Super Giants by 8 wickets
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
defeated the Lucknow Super Giants by
an innings and eight wickets. With an
outstanding third wicket partnership, Phil
Salt and Shreyas Iyer set the stage for
this victory.
As Starc skillfully resumed bowling, the
southpaw was caught off guard. He
finished the last over with two wickets for
six, his highest figures of the season.
In response, rookie West Indian pacer
Shamar Joseph gave up 22 runs in the
opening over, giving KKR a fantastic
start. Mohsin Khan gave the hosts a
scare by cheaply claiming Angkrish
Raghuvanshi and Narine.
However, Salt's accurate and crisp
hitting kept KKR moving and delighted
the spectators on both sides of the
wicket. Salt (89 not out) achieved his
second fifty after making an impression
behind the stumps. Arshad Khan
conceded a six at deep square-leg, and
Salt was dropped on 31 off Joseph. With
Shreyas Iyer (38 not out) adding quickly,
he scored 120 as KKR easily passed the
finish line.
3. Salt, Starc hand KKR big win vs LSG
The Kolkata Knight Riders defeated the
Lucknow Super Giants by an innings and
eight wickets. With an outstanding third
wicket partnership, Phil Salt and Shreyas
Iyer set the stage for this victory.
In the second innings, Salt led the way
with an unbeaten 47-ball 89, but Starc
took significant LSG wickets to end at 3
for 28, his best figures of the year. After
winning their first of five straight games
at home this month, KKR is currently in
second on the points table.
Thanks to the efforts of their spinners in
the middle overs, when they prevented
LSG from breaking away even with
wickets in hand, KKR were left chasing a
manageable mark. Varun Chakravarthy
claimed a spell of 1 for 30, while Sunil
Narine finished with 1 for 17 in four.
Their eight overs totaled just 5.88 per
over.
There were two positive aspects of LSG:
Mohsin Khan and Nicholas Pooran.
Mohsin took the lone two KKR wickets
during the powerplay, but Pooran hit four
sixes and two fours in a 32-ball 45 to
give LSG a competitive total from No. 6.
4. Teams on Points Table LSG and KKR
In five games, LSG has six points.
Despite their Friday loss to the Delhi
Capitals, they remain in the top four
spots in the standings. LSG will be
happy with Ayush Badoni and Arshad
Khan's innings, which helped the team
overcome a lackluster 94 for 7 to finish
at 167. Devdutt Padikkal's dismal form,
which has seen him score only 25 runs
in five games, will worry LSG.
In their last match, KKR lost to Chennai
Super Kings in Chennai, their first loss of
the tournament. However, similar to
LSG, KKR is also securely positioned in
the points standings, trailing only the
Rajasthan Royals by two points—and
that too with a game remaining.
KKR played three away games in the
first leg of the schedule, winning two of
them. The following five games for KKR
will now be played at home. Thus, by the
conclusion of the season, they might
have a foot in the playoffs if they can
dominate these games in the same way
as some other clubs like CSK, Mumbai
Indians, and Gujarat Titans.
In yesterday’s match KKR got one more
point against LSG.
