This document introduces an academic collaboration platform called Klatsch that aims to overcome limitations of Blackboard, fill a void, and apply features of Reddit, Facebook, LinkedIn, and tech forums. Klatsch would provide a platform for users with .edu email accounts to create posts asking questions or sharing information, and allow others to view and respond. It would enable users to enroll in topics and classes they are interested in and aggregate content through saved groupings. The document outlines Klatsch's features and competitive advantages over platforms like Blackboard, Canvas, Reddit, and others.

Editor's Notes
Blackboard - Blackboard has less user interface customization
Used to be more graphic
Now more link-heavy
With a more user centric organization, and customization from Academic accounts, teachers can more easily use Klatsch to supplement their teaching material
University of Washington - Canvas
Open sourced alternative to Blackboard that has products of class, no longer tied to licensing to blackboard, more classroom management
Control coding and updates
While open source solutions often allow more customization, it can be daunting to people who aren’t tech savy. Covers a very small section of what Klatsch does.
ShowMe
ShowMe is an open online learning community where anyone can learn and teach any topic.
Ability to create “ShowMe’s” that allow anyone to use a powerful digital whiteboard to teach any subject
Free, no limit to the amount of ShowMe’s one can create
This is limited to uploading videos and has less ability to evoke discussion, as well as tie into an academic environment.
Reddit
We pulled a lot of ideas from Reddit, including much of the user interface.
However, the subgrouping or subredditing of topics isn’t how modern social media works.
Society is gravitating towards any topic being related to any other, and Klatsch provides that link while encouraging the more academic environment found in blackboard
You may say “But money doesn’t grow on trees, how are you going to pay for this?”
Well, we take the best of all worlds.
Nearly everybody uses ads to power social website, this is the nature of the beast, because hey, it works.
And if you don’t like it, you can always elect for a Premium Account, giving you additional capabilities, like making your own topic like “Cat Memes”.
And finally Academic Accounts will be funded by universities to allow instructors to back topics to supplement their classrooms as well as open up conversation with other instructors.
Strength - Collects technology from several different SNS and collects them in a new avenue.
Weakness - Don’t have the capital to develop the idea.
Opportunity - Being the first to market with a SNS like idea often creates enough of a barrier that other companies aren’t able to compete.
Threat - Due to rapidly changing environment, either being too early or too late to the market is detrimental.
Political - Non-support by teacher unions
Hesitation/Ownership of teaching material (as far as sharing with other teachers/schools)
Socio-cultural - Hesitation/Ownership of teaching material
Less able to to support in poorer school districts without computers
Technological - Already existing technology
Economical - Difficulty to make money using Ads, Premium Accounts/ Academic Accounts
Legal - Teacher-unions
Competitive Advantage
Value - Students struggle with school, but enjoy SNS. This combines them into a new format. People will value this product.
Rarity - While there are a few products similar to this on the market, none of them provide all of the benefits that we do.
Immitatability - This is 100% Immitatability. We would only maintain a competitive advantage through being a first responder. This is increasingly prevalent with SNS.
Organization - The technology is readily available to create this, just need the resources to take it off of the ground.
