In this laboratory, we will carry out a safety audit of an Open Source web application. The technical objective is to provide a complete report and treat all phases of investigative work: black box analysis, open source analysis, identifying vulnerabilities (XSS, injections, disclosure, etc.), recommendations for strengthening, and prioritization of tasks. All skills will be tested in this complex exercise. We will work on a real application: (The name of the application will come later). The laboratory will end with the handing over of the report to the authors of the application so they can have an outside view on the safety of the application.

The pervasiveness of cloud and containers has led to systems that are much more distributed and dynamic in nature. Highly elastic microservice and serverless architectures mean containers spin up on demand and scale to zero when that demand goes away. In this world, servers are very much cattle, not pets. This shift has exposed deficiencies in some of the tools and practices we used in the world of servers-as-pets. Specifically, there are questions around how we monitor and debug these types of systems at scale. And with the rise of DevOps and product mindset, making data-driven decisions is becoming increasingly important for agile development teams. In this talk, we discuss a new approach to system monitoring and data collection: the observability pipeline. For organizations that are heavily siloed, this approach can help empower teams when it comes to operating their software. The observability pipeline provides a layer of abstraction that allows you to get operational data such as logs and metrics everywhere it needs to be without impacting developers and the core system. Unlocking this data can also be a huge win for the business with things like auditability, business analytics, and pricing. Lastly, it allows you to change backing data systems easily or test multiple in parallel. With the amount of data and the number of tools modern systems demand these days, we'll see how the observability pipeline becomes just as essential to the operations of a service as the CI/CD pipeline.

Infecting the Embedded Supply Chain

With a surge in the production of internet of things (IoT) devices, embedded development tools are becoming commonplace and the software they run on is often trusted to run in escalated modes. However, some of the embedded development tools on the market contain serious vulnerabilities that put users at risk. In this talk we discuss the various attack vectors that these embedded development tools expose users to, and why users should not blindly trust their tools. This talk will detail a variety reverse engineering, fuzzing, exploit development and protocol analysis techniques that we used to analyze and exploit the security of a common embedded debugger.

Gearbox built an online services platform named Spark for Borderlands 2. As this was an entirely new effort for Gearbox, we learned that building a service is quite different from building a game. Along the way, we shipped two beta releases in the original Borderlands to help us succeed. The genesis of Spark, key milestones and challenges in its creation, and post-mortem from launch are discussed. This talk will help others understand why we created Spark and also what it takes to launch an online service.

Bio: I have been developing software for over 45 years. I joined the original IBM Smalltalk prototype team in 1990 and was a founding member of the IBM VisualAge Smalltalk development team. I was Team Lead and Chief Architect of IBM VisualAge Smalltalk from 1997 to 2007. In February 2007, I joined Instantiations to lead the VA Smalltalk development team. I am currently the CTO and Principal Smalltalk Architect focusing on future product architecture and development. I live in Durham, NC and work in Raleigh, NC.

Three years ago Netflix migrated all of its source code to Git for version control. This change furthered the independence of our engineering teams enabling them to manage, build, test and deploy with little friction. But the more distributed our source code becomes, the harder it can be to assess the impact of a change or understand the state of the world. Making a simple change to a shared library could have impact to dozens of critical services so the more feedback engineers can gain, the better. But how do you run an expensive operation against every single git repository within your organization?
