Digital etiquette, also known as netiquette, provides basic guidelines for polite and respectful online behavior. It establishes rules like treating others with courtesy and respect, using proper grammar and avoiding offensive language in both casual and formal digital communications. Maintaining good digital etiquette helps create a respectful online environment for all.
This document summarizes the history of rice production in Cameroon from the colonial era to present day. It describes how rice production grew significantly from the 1960s through the 1980s, peaking at around 107,000 tons in 1985, before declining in the late 1980s due to economic issues. Currently, rice production meets only 13% of domestic consumption, with imports making up the difference. The document reviews the key rice growing regions and production systems in Cameroon.
The document discusses how the author linked their main music video product to ancillary products like a digipak and magazine advert. It explains that they linked the products through consistent themes of death and grief, color schemes featuring the band in natural lighting, use of the same band equipment props, displaying the band's name, and having the band members wear consistent clothing. The goal was to make all the products work together to sell the band and present a cohesive brand identity.

This document provides an overview of the Avalon Green Alley Network Demonstration Project in Los Angeles. It begins with an introduction to green alleys and examples from other cities. It then documents the development of the Avalon Project, including its history, partnerships, funding, design, community outreach and upcoming construction. The Avalon Project aims to transform alleys in the South Park neighborhood into a green network by incorporating permeable paving, vegetation and stormwater management techniques. It has the potential to serve as a model for green alley projects in Los Angeles and beyond. The report concludes with lessons learned from the project to aid in future green alley efforts.

What counts as a philosophical theory of well-being?Ilse Oosterlaken
Different taxonomies of philosophical theories of well-being have recently been proposed. They provide an alternative to Parfit’s well-known but limited tripartite distinction between desire, hedonist and objective list theories. The availability of multiple taxonomies raises the question which one is best. This paper discusses the criterion that a taxonomy should have the right scope, meaning that it should include all (exhaustiveness) and only (accurateness) proper philosophical theories of well-being. A judgment of right scope presupposes agreement on the question of what counts as a philosophical theory of well-being. The paper explores two related methods of answering that question, and concludes that ultimately determining the right scope of the taxonomy is as much a philosophical issue as identifying the most compelling theory of well-being. The paper makes two general proposals that impact the right scope for the taxonomy. The first is to distinguish between evaluative theories of well-being and meta-theories of well-being. The latter, for example well-being nihilism and variabilism, should not be included in a taxonomy of the former. The second is to aim for a taxonomy of theories of prudential value, which acknowledges that well-being and quality of life may not be the same.
ICT, Development & Privacy: Exploring the Debate and Evaluating Argumentative...Ilse Oosterlaken
A presentation on a research proposal which unfortunately did not get funding. This was the abstract included with th grant application:
Privacy, while prominent in Western debates on ICT, receives little attention in the context of ‘ICT for Development’ (ICT4D) research and practice. Arguments in favour or against paying systematic attention to privacy in ICT4D – e.g. “the income-poor are especially vulnerable to privacy-related harms” (pro), or “imposing privacy concerns is a form of cultural imperialism” (against) – have not yet been articulated in any detail.
In this research I will explore the argumentative landscape, expanding the methods of analytical discourse evaluation and argument mapping to a new domain and intercultural context. Based on focus groups with ICT4D scholars, practitioners and stakeholders I will sketch ‘argument maps’. Semi-structured interviews will provide further empirical information about actual reasoning concerning privacy in this context – allowing for a refinement of argument maps.
Key arguments will subsequently be assessed on their strength/plausibility. This requires a thorough normative-ethical analysis, drawing on both Computer Ethics and Development Ethics, and considering empirical realities as studied by ICT4D scholars – three disciplines which currently have little overlap. One contribution to the academic literature is providing the first steps towards such interdisciplinary analysis.
More practically, a pilot will explore how to facilitate deliberations on privacy within ICT4D practice.
Technology, Poverty Reduction & the Responsbility of EngineersIlse Oosterlaken
Technology has an immense potential to contribute to poverty reduction and human development, and the details of design are crucial for its impact. Engineers are thus in a position to make a real difference in the world. Yet to do this in a responsible way is a challenge, as the meaning of human development is far from obvious and even contested, and the relation between technology and poverty reduction is complex. Too often technology introduced in the South has failed, or disadvantaged already marginalized groups, or led to other negative societal consequences. In this talk I will introduce the ‘capability approach’ of Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum as a providing designers and engineers with a useful lens through which to examine this nexus. Justice, well-being and human agency are central values in this approach, which focusses on the capabilities that individuals have to lead the life they have reason to value. As such, it moves away from a simplistic picture of poverty as merely a lack of income. It also draws attention to the great diversity in people and their social and natural environments, awareness of which is also of great importance for engineers and designers wishing to work and engage in this area. The real question is thus not “what if… technology challenged poverty and social inequality?”, but “how exactly… are we going to make technology truly challenge poverty and social inequality?”
