China is becoming increasingly powerful in the Asia-Pacific region and exerting greater economic and political influence over its neighbors. It manages regional issues pragmatically and does things only as needed. Countries like Japan, Korea, Australia and Singapore are gaining economic benefits through partnerships with China, though Singapore maintains some independence of influence. Malaysia has developed strong neutral ties that benefit it economically, while internal divisions have hurt stability in Indonesia. Burma is seeing growing Chinese immigration and investment, Thailand balances relationships well for benefits, and Vietnam risks becoming dependent on China after opening its borders.
