dubai — The UAE has succeeded
in reducing the cost of producing
electricity from solar resources to
record lows as it continues to de-
liver on its commitment to support
all initiatives to ensure sustainable
development and energy supplies
for all and achieve a green econ-
omy, the UAE Minister of Energy
said on Friday on the observance
of World Energy Day.
Observed every year on October
22, the World Energy Day was de-
clared in 2012 during the World
Energy Forum in Dubai and was
first endorsed by His Highness
Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid
Al Maktoum, Vice-President and
Prime Minister of the UAE and
Ruler of Dubai, along with rep-
resentatives of 54 countries, the
United Nations, the League of
Arab States and the African Union
Commission, through the “Dubai
Declaration - Energy for All”.
“The World Energy Day is an op-
portunity to increase awareness of
the importance of rationalising en-
ergy,reducingcarbonemissionsand
protecting the environment,” said
SuhailbinMohammedFarajFarisAl
Mazrouei,MinisterofEnergy.
“It is also a reminder for institu-
tions and individuals to combine ef-
forts to curb practices damaging the
environment, preserve natural re-
sourcesandensuresustainabilityfor
thecominggenerations,”headded.
Al Mazrouei noted that the UAE
cut gasoline and diesel subsidies in
2015 as part of efforts to achieve
sustainability and preserve natural
resources.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer,
Vice-Chairman of Dubai Su-
preme Council of Energy and
Managing Director and CEO of
the Dubai Electricity and Water
Authority (Dewa), said: “World

What is World
Energy Day?
It is initiative endorsed by His
Highness shaikh mohammed
bin rashid al maktoum, vice-
President and Prime minister
of the uae and ruler of Dubai,
along with representatives of
54 countries, in addition to the
united nations, arab league
and african union commis-
sion, who all agreed to make it
a yearly event through “Dubai
Declaration - energy for all” on
october 22, 2012.
The World energy Day
includes a series of activities
to raise awareness on the im-
portance of conservation and
rational use of energy and to
promote the sustainability of
energy. This includes increas-
ing the efficiency of transpor-
tation networks, industrial
processes, buildings, and the
electricity grid. It also aims to
increase energy efficiency and
sustainability.
The aim of organising this
celebration is to support
policies that will increase en-
ergy efficiency by expanding
transportation networks that
use efficient energy methods,
as well as efficient processes
in the industry, construction
and electricity networks, plus
increasing energy efficiency
and sustainability procedures
of urban planning regionally.
while encouraging the sustain-
able use of energy.”
“On this important occasion, I
would like to take the opportunity
to raise awareness about the im-
portance of energy preservation
and conservation, to protect the
environment and reduce carbon
emissions, as well as protect our
natural resources. The Dewa sup-
ports sustainable development in
Dubai by launching projects and
initiatives to support infrastruc-
ture in the emirate. The strategy
aims to provide seven per cent of
Dubai’s energy from clean sources
by 2020; 25 per cent by 2030;
and 75 per cent by 2050.
“I would also like to take this
opportunity to urge all citizens
and residents in Dubai to become
partners in the Shams Dubai ini-
tiative, by installing photovoltaic
(PV) panels on their rooftops to
generate electricity from solar
power. The electricity is used on-
site and the surplus is exported to
Dewa’s network. Shams Dubai in-
creases the adoption rate of clean
and renewable energy by the com-
munity and adheres to our eco-
nomic, social, and environmental
sustainability objectives, Al Tayer
added.
Meanwhile, the UAE will host
the 24th World Energy Congress
2019 in Abu Dhabi as part of ef-
forts to transform into the world’s
capital for energy.

#worldenergyday.
> Create an internal event.
> organise the screening of an
energy-saving themed documen-
tary.
> Create energy challenge
conservation contests within
departments.
> Conduct a workshop to create
awareness on sustainability within
the office/home environment and
show its effectiveness.
> Promote the use of setting the
a/c to 24 degrees or higher to
save energy and costs.
as an individual:
> Switch off or unplug any
chargers or appliances you don’t
need. If they have a standby light,
a display or are hot to the touch
they’ll be using energy.
> Check the energy label to make
sure you’re buying an efficient
product.
> Switch to lED. You can now
get leD spotlights that are bright
enough to replace halogens, as
well as regular energy saving
bulbs.
> Use water saving aerators. If
you’re not replacing taps or
shower units, you can still save
water by fitting aerators to taps
and showers.

dubai — It was an
energetic Friday
morning, when
over 230 women

thesame.ThefirsteverPinkLadies
Games in the Middle East saw
women of all cultures and ages
come together and take part in un-
usual and active challenges spe-

The games were held in part-
nership with Pink Caravan UAE
breast cancer initiative. Over 40
teams from across Dubai took
part in the games for women and
all of them tested their strength,
endurance and fitness at the spe-
cially designed challenges.
The challenges were created to
unite cultures in an active manner
and included Land Rover tyre
change, paddle boarding races in
the sea and the Waiter’s race, fol-
lowed by a Fitness First tug of war
and the Eliminator nail breaker.
All teams warmed up with a Zum-
ba dance hosted by Fitness First.
Inge Van Belle, co-founder of
Hercules Trophy, which was
among the organisers of the pro-
gramme, said: “Seeing so many

The ladies-only games concept
originated from Europe and has
been running in five cities for over
1,000 women before launching
in Dubai on Friday. It is supported
by the Dubai Sports Council and
Emirates Red Crescent.
One of the participants in the
event, Pamela Lovett from Zeta
Phi Beta Sorority, said: “We had
such a great time, the event was
fabulous,agreatcause.Everything
was very well organised with lots
of energy and we would definitely
like to come back next year.”
Participants and their friends
and family enjoyed the music
played by a local DJ who made
sure everyone was ready to bat-
tle it out on the beach, in the
pool and on the paddle boards in
the sea. The games were fol-
lowed by a delicious breakfast
by the pool as the awards and
prizes were given for the win-
ners as well as for the best
dressed team, best sportsman-
ship and the most special lady.

dubai — It was a balmy Fri-
day, but the who’s who of
Dubai braved the heat to at-
tend the first day of Fashion
Forward Dubai (FFWD) be-
ing held at the Hai in Dubai
Design District. The tone
was set with a talk by the
world’s leading trend fore-
casting agency, WGSN’s
Jane Boddy. She spoke of
all the new trends for
Spring/Summer 2017,
such as The Beachcomber,
Riviera Sunset and Purity
— all of which have a very
resort feel. And, of course,
since fashion is all about
‘opposites attracting’, we
need to also look out for the
costumes-inspired ‘Future
Past’ style, which is a throw-
back to the times of the Tu-
dors and showcases their
love for details in a new,
more contemporary way.
As Boddy took the audi-
ence through top trends of
the next season, there was
also a showcase of the col-
lections of 14 accessories’
designers. The resort trend
was very apparent — be it in
Madiso’s fashion jewellery
inspired by waves, Belquis
bags’ use of soft blues or Na-
thalie Trad’s use of shells.
Bana’s retro round-shaped
handcraftedglassesadorned
with daisies and roses were
all about “Riviera Sunset”.
The first designer to do a
full runway collection was
Maram (it was her debut);
but both hers and Saudi Ara-
bian designer Arwa Al Ban-
wai’s showing lacked punch.
In both cases, the finishing
lacked finesse — and with
this being FFWD’s eighth
season, there’s no excuse for
weak tailoring.
On the other hand, the
detailing and finishing in
all the accessories’ collec-
tions were impeccable. But
then, that should not be a
surprise since, this year,
for the first time, 11 de-
signers participating in
FFWD were selected to
show during Paris Fashion
Week. It was a fitting nod
to the talent of designers
such as Madiso and Rula
Galayani, whose products
received the most positive
reaction from buyers.

by chance and not by choice.

This includes increas- ing the efficiency of transpor- tation networks, industrial processes, buildings, and the electricity grid. It also aims to increase energy efficiency and sustainability. The aim of organising this celebration is to support policies that will increase en- ergy efficiency by expanding transportation networks that use efficient energy methods, as well as efficient processes in the industry, construction and electricity networks, plus increasing energy efficiency and sustainability procedures of urban planning regionally. while encouraging the sustain- able use of energy.” “On this important occasion, I would like to take the opportunity to raise awareness about the im- portance of energy preservation and conservation, to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions, as well as protect our natural resources. The Dewa sup- ports sustainable development in Dubai by launching projects and initiatives to support infrastruc- ture in the emirate. The strategy aims to provide seven per cent of Dubai’s energy from clean sources by 2020; 25 per cent by 2030; and 75 per cent by 2050. “I would also like to take this opportunity to urge all citizens and residents in Dubai to become partners in the Shams Dubai ini- tiative, by installing photovoltaic (PV) panels on their rooftops to generate electricity from solar power. The electricity is used on- site and the surplus is exported to Dewa’s network. Shams Dubai in- creases the adoption rate of clean and renewable energy by the com- munity and adheres to our eco- nomic, social, and environmental sustainability objectives, Al Tayer added. The tone was set with a talk by the world’s leading trend fore- casting agency, WGSN’s Jane Boddy. She spoke of all the new trends for Spring/Summer 2017, such as The Beachcomber, Riviera Sunset and Purity — all of which have a very resort feel. And, of course, since fashion is all about ‘opposites attracting’, we need to also look out for the costumes-inspired ‘Future Past’ style, which is a throw- back to the times of the Tu- dors and showcases their love for details in a new, more contemporary way. As Boddy took the audi- ence through top trends of the next season, there was also a showcase of the col- lections of 14 accessories’ designers. The resort trend was very apparent — be it in Madiso’s fashion jewellery inspired by waves, Belquis bags’ use of soft blues or Na- thalie Trad’s use of shells. Bana’s retro round-shaped handcraftedglassesadorned with daisies and roses were all about “Riviera Sunset”. The first designer to do a full runway collection was Maram (it was her debut); but both hers and Saudi Ara- bian designer Arwa Al Ban- wai’s showing lacked punch. In both cases, the finishing lacked finesse — and with this being FFWD’s eighth season, there’s no excuse for weak tailoring. On the other hand, the detailing and finishing in all the accessories’ collec- tions were impeccable. But then, that should not be a surprise since, this year, for the first time, 11 de- signers participating in FFWD were selected to show during Paris Fashion Week. It was a fitting nod to the talent of designers such as Madiso and Rula Galayani, whose products received the most positive reaction from buyers. sujata@khaleejtimes.com Pink ladies unite for cancer awareness at FFWD, accessories prove shoWstoppers Saman Haziq UAEenvoyto UKpresents credentials to Queen london — Sulaiman Hamed Al Mazrouei has presented his cre- dentials to Queen Elizabeth II as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the UAE to the United Kingdom in a cere- mony at Buckingham Palace.
