- Our roots are in the forest. It is sustainable and renewable. We are transforming from a traditional paper and board producer to a customer-focused renewable materials growth company Our ambition is to offer a competitive alternative to products based on fossil and other non-renewable materials Everything that’s made with fossil materials today can be made from a tree tomorrow For example, the demand for alternatives to plastic and aluminium packaging will drive innovation in packaging solutions. Today, only about 50% of a tree is utilised. Mainly the cellulose. The rest is used for energy. We are looking into utilising the rest of the tree to manufacture e.g. biochemicals Stora Enso is investing in new technologies and processes, such as Micro Fibrillated Cellulose (MFC), which is a board with improved properties such as increased strength and reduced weight Our CO2 emissions per saleable tonne of pulp, paper, and board were 39% lower than the 2006 benchmark level. But we can do much more. We aim to increase the use of biomass as an energy source. In 2016, 80% of the total CO2 emissions from our own operations were carbon neutral.

- We are pursuing to increase the demand for dissolving pulp as sustainable raw material in the textile industry Pulp and its derivatives have opportunities to replace non-sustainable materials Enocell pulp mill in Uimaharju, Finland produces 150 000 tonnes/year of dissolving pulp from birch wood Product development takes place in close collaboration with our customers Our Pure dissolving pulp is used by our customers in the production of viscose fibres for the textile industry Our product represents a traceable source of raw material with a very low environmental impact over other sources in the industry

Our role is to provide all the knowledge, competence and learnings we make globally and use it to ensure strong business developments and solutions to be used locally. Today we will see one example - how we provide a cost-competitive building system based on our deep understanding. The multi storey Residential system is our first but definitely not our last. New systems will be launched continuously. The building sector has an oversized environmental footprint Energy: one third of global energy end use takes place within buildings, further 10% when manufacturing the products. Carbon: The use phase of buildings alone estimated to be responsible for 19% of total global greenhouse gas emissions. - Stora Enso and Volvo Cars opened a hot water pipeline between their manufacturing sites in Ghent, Belgium. The 4 km pipeline takes hot water heated using renewable energy from Stora Enso’s Langerbrugge paper mill to the Volvo plant, where it will be used to heat buildings and paint booths. Collaboration enables Volvo Car Gent to cut CO₂ emissions by more than 40%. The annual reductions correspond to the heating of 5 000 households. The four-kilometre pipeline takes hot water heated using renewable energy from Stora Enso’s paper mill to the Volvo plant, where it will be used to heat buildings and paint booths. The annual reductions in CO₂ emissions correspond to the heating of 5 000 households. Thanks to the pipeline, Volvo Cars will use substantially lower amounts of fossil fuels for heating – also reducing the plant’s CO₂ emissions and energy costs. The project will lead to emission reductions estimated at 15 000 tonnes of CO₂ per year, cutting the Ghent plant’s total CO₂ emissions by more than 40 per cent. Volvo Car Group has a stated ambition to be among the leaders in climate neutral operations and energy efficiency. The joint project with Stora Enso takes the company a significant step closer to this goal, reducing its Europe-wide CO₂ emissions by 24 per cent. Stora Enso has committed to reduce the company’s use of fossil fuels to as close to zero as is technically and economically feasible over the next ten years. This cooperation with Volvo is an example of the collaborative efforts Stora Enso is taking to combat global warming. Twelve of Stora Enso's mills are currently linked to local district heating systems, significantly reducing the use of oil and other fossil fuels in these localities. The project in Belgium was initiated in 2014. The construction of a system of industrial district heating outside our premises and the delivery of external renewable energy to Volvo Car Gent will lead to increased energy efficiency, which is beneficial to the environment and increases the use of our assets,” says Chris De Hollander, managing director of Stora Enso’s Langerbrugge Mill.
