Judith Jamison was born in 1943 in Philadelphia and began her dance training at age six. She studied ballet, modern, and other styles. In 1964, Jamison joined the American Ballet Theatre and later joined Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, performing in many of Ailey's famous works including Cry. She stayed with the company until 1980 and then performed globally as a guest artist. In 1989, Jamison became the Artistic Director of Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, a position she held for 21 years bringing the company great success. She continues to be a renowned dancer, choreographer, and leader in the dance world.
