Past simple
Definition of Simple Past
The past simple - sometimes called the past tense - is
used to express a completed action in a period of time
before now . The Simple Past is the primary form of
expression of the past in the English language .When
using the simple past we are referring to an event in the
recent past or the distant past, or it may be unimportant
to mention when the event occurred.
Example on past simple
Examples
• John Cabot sailed to America in 1498.
• My father died last year.
• He lived in Fiji in 1976.
• We crossed the Channel yesterday.
Used of past simple
The simple past is always used when referring to when the event
occurred .
So, it is often accompanied by chronological expressions referring
to the past • Frequency : ( often, sometimes, always )
I sometimes walked home at lunchtime.
I often brought my lunch to school.
Used of past simple
 Specific point in time : ( last week, when I was a child, yesterday,
six weeks ago )
We saw a good film last week .
Yesterday , I arrived in Geneva.
She finished her work at seven o'clock.
I went to the theater last night.
Used of past simple
 Unspecified point in time :
( the other day, ages ago, a long time ago )
Example :
People lived in caves a long time ago .
She played the piano when she was a child
formulate of the past simple tense
the regular (non-anomalous) formula
his is simply by adding only the literal (ed) to the end of
the verb so the verb becomes past.
Subject + V-ed + Complement
if the subject then the verb added to it literal Ed then the
rest of the sentence whether it was an object in it First.
Regular verbs
example
I work in a travel agency now. Before that I worked in a
department store.
They invited us to their party, but we decided not to go.
The police stopped me on my way home last night.
Laura passed her exam because she studied very hard.
Irregular verbs
The past simple does not end in -ed.
For example:
write → wrote Mozart wrote more than 600 pieces of music.
see → saw We saw Alice in town a few days ago.
go → went I went to the cinema three times last week.
shut → shut It was cold, so I shut the window
How do we formulate the question?
in question we use the verb did, whether
installed or exiled
Examples:
Did you go out last night?
When did Yasser die?
Negative of past simple
negative sentences we use didn’t + infinitive
(enjoy/see/go etc)
Example :
I didn’t buy anything because I didn’t have any
money.
I didn’t do anything.

• They weren't in Rio last summer.
• We didn't have any money.
• We didn't have time to visit the Eiffel Tower.
• We didn't do our exercises this morning.
• Were they in Iceland last January?
• Did you have a bicycle when you were young?
• Did you do much climbing in Switzerland?
