5. “Jireh” is the lead song from the first full-length collaboration
between Elevation Worship and Maverick City Music, Old Church
Basement.
The title refers to one of the Jehovistic names of God – “YHVH-Jireh,”
which is found in Genesis 22:14 where Abraham trusts God to provide a
substitutionary sacrifice in place of his only begotten son, Isaac.
Abraham called the name of that place The LORD Will Provide, as it is said
to this day, “In the mount of the LORD it will be provided.”
The basic meaning of this phrase is that God sees and takes care of our
needs. The Hebrew word for Jireh, “ra'a” means “to see” or “to perceive.”
The same Hebrew word is used elsewhere in Genesis 22 when Abraham
“saw” and “looked.”
The deeper meaning is that God provided a substitutionary sacrifice for our
sin just as He provided a ram to die in place of Isaac. Hebrews
11:19 clearly states that Isaac was a “type,” or foreshadowing of God’s
“Only Begotten Son” Jesus who would come to die a sacrificial death for
our sin. Jesus is both the provider AND the provision.
