The Presentation for the Award Winning Feature Film Jhing Chik Jing.
Based against the backdrop of farmer suicides the film tells the story of a 10 year old boy who refuses to let circumstances get the better of him
4. Once upon a now .....
....on a house by a tiny farm, lives a ten year old boy called
Shyam.
In his family are his father Mouli, his mother Manda and his
sister Dipti.
5. Shyam .....
.... is an typical 10 year old. Mischievous, Inquisitive &
Impatient. He is a boy in a hurry!
Shyam hopes to be a “SOMEBODY” when he grew up.
Maybe become a doctor. Maybe buy his own car.
6. Shyam .....
.... wants to grasp the world in his hand
But what he wants right now are fairly simple things – a
plateful of bhajjis (fritters), a new compass box and maybe a
new fountain pen.
But the one thing that he really wants is a new shirt for his
school uniform.
7. Shyam’s Parents.....
....are Mouli (father) and Manda (mother).
Mouli is a cotton farmer and he tries to do his best by his family
by eking out his living on the farm.
The cotton, when harvested, will be sold at the local cotton mill
and pay off their debts – Rs.10,000 or US $250 - to the local
moneylender .
8. Shyam .....
.... is least concerned with all this.
His major time is spent in exploring, discovering & playing
pranks on people. His frequent targets are his own sister Dipti &
assorted villagers.
Shyam’s partner in crime is Gautam. Not good at studies, but
great at sports. The two have a fun childhood.
9. .....has another close friend in the village – Vasantrao Kavi -
considered by other villagers to be an eccentric farmer.
Shyam is intrigued by Vasantrao’s lifestyle & his off-beat
methods of farming. He often thinks that the Kavi is a little ‘crazy
in the head’.
Shyam .....
10. ..... is also drawn to the Kavi. He keeps quizzing Kavi about his
farm, the trees and nature. The Kavi too encourages this
enquiring nature. He begins to inculcate a sense of
environmental consciousness in the children, especially Shyam.
He gives Shyam a small piece of land to tend and try out Organic
farming.
Shyam .....
11. And then one day .....
..... Shyam realises that his family is going to lose their farm.
The cotton crop, that the family had their hopes pinned on,
fetched a very low rate at the market.
All dreams of new school uniforms & bhajjis come crashing
down.
12. Shyam’s Parents.....
….have decided on a suicide pact, wherein all members of the
family will die the day the house & land is repossessed .
Shyam overhears this conversation and is completely shattered.
13. Shyam.....
…once he gets over his initial despondency, takes it upon himself to
save his family.
The lessons he has learned at school give him reason to hope. One day
in school, he hits upon a scheme that might just do the trick - a sack
race that carries a winner’s prize of Rupees. 10,000/-.
14. …one day in school, Shyam hits upon a scheme that might just
do the trick - a sack race that carries a winner’s prize of Rupees.
10,000/-.
Come D-day, Shyam runs the race of his life – literally! But can
he save his family?
And then.....
