Jefferson Pérez was born in Cuenca, Ecuador on July 1, 1974. He had to balance his studies with work to support his family while obtaining degrees in Business Administration and a Master's. His career in marching began by chance when preparing for an endurance race for a Physical Education exam. He is Ecuador's most decorated athlete, winning gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, making him the only Ecuadorian to win an Olympic gold medal.
