Hello! My name is Jazmin Bernal Fajardo. I am in my fourth year at the University of Cincinnati. In the fall of 2016, I will be graduating from the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences; majoring in Communication with a minor in Psychology and a Public Relations Certificate. This electronic portfolio is meant to illustrate the concentrations I have focused on during my time at the University of Cincinnati.
I am beyond excited to be graduating from such an amazing institute. I can honestly say that I have enjoyed all my times at the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences as well as my time at the University of Cincinnati’s Blue Ash campus. As a non traditional student, I was able to use my passion toward Communications and be able to study what has always interested me. At my time at UCBA, I discovered my love for psychology and the human mind. My initial love however has been the PR section of Communication, which is why I am obtaining the Public Relations Certificate as well.
I like to add my bio because If I am not presenting this to you, in person, then this is exactly how I would introduce myself.
I have been at the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences pursuing my Communication degree. here I have also obtained my public relations certificates through various communication courses within the college. I transitioned however to the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences from UC Blue Ash where I minored in psychology.
I always knew that I wanted to major in Communication because my whole life I knew that that’s what I was good at. Communicating with people. I really enjoy the communication study and really loved my classes. I am really going to miss this place!
In my most current role I am the Hispanic/Latino Affairs intern. This role is out of the Student Life office and the description of my Responsibilities to this internship are to aid the Coordinator of Hispanic/Latino Affairs in developing, implementing and coordinating programs and initiatives designed to serve the UCBA Hispanic student population.
This is a new position that has been added to the college as of this academic school year. So, we really had to implement a whole new program. I was a part of the search committee for the position along with the Director of student life. We really had to start from scratch– from the hiring committee to the programming. At this time of my internship I helped with the student orientation session for students and parents. This was all done in Spanish and we had to come up with the language for these orientations. We also went to at various different high schools to recruit and start early. We also went into a few middle schools. I was excited because I got to go to the high school that I attend which is where I first became interested in Higher Education.
My favorite part of the internship however had to do with something that I was given the complete freedom to work on, which is the prospective tours for parents and students in Spanish. I was in charge of creating this because this type of programming didn’t exist at the University of Cincinnati.
The translated ucblueash.edu/espanol went live mid-April. The best feeling was to have this become live! We are so proud of this work at my office and when it became live, Marcus the director of Student Life was also proud, as seen on his Facebook post.
My first internship was with the Multicultural Affairs office. This was before there was a Hispanic and Latino office and I really helped with the events and I really enjoyed that part of student life. Because we really focus on the students and the retention. We really had to do plenty of research before we got to do any of the events. I was involved with sisters in the circle which is what this picture here is about. We actually were at the traveling scarf tradition celebration this was actually the second year that it was implemented and it was really cool because we got connected with in the college. We had staff. We had students and we had a faculty that were a part of this. What was really cool about this program is that we got to get to know each other on a different level, on a sister level. Which is why it's called sister circle. From sister circle like it got moved onto sisters in the spirit where I was in charge of conducting biweekly spirit kind of meditation within your sisters we also had two women of the world conference is that when I was an intern there; we had three Mexican Independence Day celebration, and world fast which is just a whole week of full events that really promote and celebrate diversity .
While I was in my internship positions these were only part time and only about 10 hours a week so I have other employements while I was on campus.
