It is a self-produced, autobiographical track about facing fears of commitment, failure, and how those fears hold one back from taking chances. Jay Soul produces his music independently with help from friends and fans, enjoying the creative process of making music his own way without a major label. An alternative to mass production, Jay Soul's music is entirely home grown, intouch with its influences
and produced entirely by the artist and a network offriends, colleagues, fans and supporters.
"For me, it's all about the music, and the music is personal. It would be amazing to come at this from the
other side with the backing of a major label, but I've enjoyed every minute of the experience - of creating
my music my way."
Afraid is very much an autobiographical track. Everyone craves security,confidence and self reliance, but
when it comes to relationships, there are noguarantees and happiness is all too often in the hands of
someone else:
"Sometimes a leap of faith is worth it, I think that was a lesson that it took me some time to learn. 'Afraid'
is about fear of commitment, fear of failure and how those things ultimately hold you back - you have to
get over it and take that step, decide that you're ready and take the chance - it's the only way forward".
Approachable and earnest, Jay Soul is a very straightforward guy - balancing the production of his album
with a busy IT job in the City. Singing from an early age he felt that it was time to share his music with
others... and that the technology he works with eve day was the vehicle to do it:
"It's a very exciting time at the moment for artists. The internet creates an opportunity to get your stuff out
there and to do it on your own terms. I think I got tired of a lot of the plastic soul being churned out today
and wanted to do something with a more retro feel, but still relevant to now. I hope I've done that - I'm sure
people will let me know!".
