2. Characters
• There are two characters in this scene, a girl
and a boy, both of these characters are
teenagers and we know this because of their
appearance. To the viewer they come across
as drunk as they’re disorderly and running
down the beach front, this ties in with the
genre because its adding an element of
helplessness to the teenagers which suggests
something is going to happen.
3. Enigma
• The enigma in the ‘Jaws’ opening is the creature that is
coming towards the teenage girl, this is the enigma as
we’re unsure of what the unknown creature is so as
the audience is keeps us engaged and wants us to see
the following scene. Another enigma is the teenage
boy at the end of the clip who is laying on the beach
and unaware of what has just happened to the teenage
girl and as the viewer we fear for the boy as we know
the creature is still in the waters. This fits in with the
genre of the film as the fear of the unknown is an
ongoing thing and this is a convention that a horror
movie should have.
4. Sound
• Music starts about a minute into the opening
scene. It starts very faintly in the background. As
the camera gets closer and closer to the girl
under water, the music gets louder and faster.
During the scene there are many uses of foley,
these are the sound of splashing water and
screams from the girl. There is one main contrast
between the sound, this is that during the attack
under water, the music is very tense and very
loud, and then after the attack the music is very
quiet and very relaxed. The way this is done really
establishes that this is a horror/thriller film.
5. Image
• Before the attack, there is a panoramic image
of the beach and the sea and we can clearly
see the girl swimming, then towards the end
of the scene there is the same image but
without the girl swimming. This adds more of
an enigma to the scene and makes the
audience question what is going on.
