1. Jared Allen has long been feared as one of the best defensive ends in the
game, but can he live up to expectations at the age of 32? Allen was signed
by the Bears at 4 years, $32 million to replace Julius Peppers who was
released in the offseason. Peppers, 34, averaged 9 sacks in his 4 seasons
with Chicago while not missing a game. Peppers went on to sign with the
Green Bay Packers so he will see his former Chicago Bears twice this year.
While Allen isn’t young, at 32, he makes the Bears a couple years younger at
the defensive end position.
While Allen is getting up there in age, he has still managed to register double
digit sacks every year since 2007 including a whopping 22 sacks in 2011 while
with the Minnesota Vikings.
Allen will line up opposite of Lamarr Houston, the other defensive end who
signed this off season from Oakland. Together they hope to boast record
sacks numbers for the always aggressive Chicago defense. In years prior, it
was Chicago’s defense that out shined the offense but now with an offense
that contains, Jay Cutler, Matt Forte, Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, and
Santonio Holmes, the defense has a lot to prove.
While posting 11.5 sacks last year at 31, its safe to assume Allen will be in
double figure sacks this year as well. Allen will be a vital part to the Bears
success in 2014, look for him to bring QB pressure on every passing down.
