An 8.9 magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan on March 11, 2011, the worst earthquake ever recorded in the country. The earthquake caused powerful aftershocks and massive tsunamis over 30 feet high that destroyed cities, killed over 1,000 people, and caused widespread fires and destruction. The tsunamis demolished entire towns and the death toll was expected to rise significantly in the aftermath of the devastating quake and tsunami waves.
