This project aims to increase the competitiveness and sustainability of Mediterranean aquaculture through research and innovation. The consortium includes 28 partners from 10 countries, representing over 95% of EU Mediterranean sea bass and sea bream production. The project will develop diagnostic tools, vaccines, and improved feeding strategies to boost fish health and productivity. Key performance indicators and a code of conduct will be established to ensure high quality, safe products and responsible farming practices. The goals are to improve industry profits, produce healthy seafood, create jobs, and promote environmentally friendly aquaculture.

The document summarizes discussions from the PrimeFish 2nd Annual Meeting in Barcelona on creating collective brands for farmed fish productions. Creating a collective brand was presented as a way to differentiate products and increase sales and value. A successful brand requires producers maintaining quality over time, communicating the brand's advantages to consumers through advertisements, and all producers using the same brand identity. While the Spanish aquaculture industry does not yet have a fully successful collective brand, efforts are underway to develop a geographical brand that will create competitive advantages over cheaper imports.
This document summarizes information presented at a sustainable aquaculture workshop in Dublin, Ireland. It discusses aquaculture production in Galicia, Spain, including that Galicia produces over 75% of Europe's turbot. It notes that while the economic, social and environmental requirements for sustainable aquaculture exist in Galicia, no new farms have been established since 2004. The document then describes Galicia's efforts to establish an aquaculture planning framework since 2008 to select suitable areas and facilitate new farms, but that this plan also has not resulted in any new farms. It argues that overregulation and an uneven playing field compared to imports are key barriers to sustainable aquaculture growth in Galicia and Europe.
This document discusses the role of aquaculture farmers' organizations in the GFCM area. It outlines that such organizations exist to work on cross-cutting industry issues, benefit individual members through cooperation, aid policymakers, facilitate regulations, and improve members' competitiveness. Effective organizations require a critical industry size and staff as well as trust, impartiality, transparency, and recognition among members. The document calls for dialogue between such organizations to coordinate production, share market intelligence, prevent disease, and promote sustainability as the Mediterranean aquaculture industry currently suffers from boom and bust cycles. National organizations should encourage this transnational dialogue through the AMShP forum with the goal of delivering tangible results for farmers.
This document summarizes a national workshop on promoting aquaculture products in the EU and domestic Spanish markets.
