This document highlights four influential African American artists from the early 20th century: Henry Ossawa Tanner, who was one of the first internationally renowned African American painters; James Van Der Zee, who chronicled daily life in Harlem in the 1920s; Archibald Motley, whose paintings captured the modern jazz era; and Horace Pippin, whose primitivist style depicted the black experience in America.
