The city's port is the main one in Santa Catarina and the second largest for container exports in South America, with extensive storage facilities. The port has achieved ISO 9001:2000 certification and handles over 50 ocean liners during peak season.

In 1750, Portuguese colonists coming from Madeira and the Azores made this region their home.The Port of Itajaí is the main port of Santa Catarina, and the second port in containers (food , motors) export from South America.Its facilities occupy more then 15 thousand m² of sheltered area to stock products and 40 thousand m²unsheltered for container storage.It was awardered the ISO9001:2000 cerification.
