Ryosuke Matsumura gave a presentation on using Application Insights to aggregate logs from a Rails application. He began by introducing Application Insights and its capabilities for monitoring apps and collecting telemetry. Next, he discussed why it is important to aggregate logs, such as for analyzing errors and performance. Finally, he demonstrated how to set up Application Insights for a Rails app by adding the required gem, configuring the instrumentation key, and using the telemetry client to track events and exceptions. The presentation concluded with a live demo of Application Insights monitoring a Rails application.

It was created by Daisuke Taniwaki and colleagues at Preferred Networks to address the need to test new scheduling algorithms for their GPU cluster without risking the production environment. The simulator allows designing user behaviors flexibly and testing a scheduler with only minor modifications, unlike testing directly on the real cluster. It is open source and available on GitHub to help others develop better schedulers for machine learning jobs.

Beta testing opportunities were provided through a website for teams to find additional testers. Alumni also used mailing lists for skills sharing, help requests, and announcing app launches. VisionMobile and Gengo services were contacted but only Gengo offered discounts through API access.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code Analysis

We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs. We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations. These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18. - Accepted in ASPLOS ‘17, Xi’an, China. - Featured in the tutorial, Systemized Program Analyses: A Big Data Perspective on Static Analysis Scalability, ASPLOS ‘17. - Invited for presentation at SoCal PLS ‘16. - Invited for poster presentation at PLDI SRC ‘16.
