Did You Know?
Retention is defined as the percent of first-time, full-time freshman who return to
their college the following year. Last year, ECU’s retention goal for the 2008
freshman (returning to ECU for fall 2009) was 79%. We actually retained 78.8%.
The .2% short of our goal was literally 9 students! Nine students...
For freshman starting ECU last fall (2009) and returning fall 2010, our goal is 81%.
In recent years, ECU’s retention rate has typically fluctuated between 77% and
79% and, in recent history, we have never achieved 80%. Until this year…we hope.
And, we are positive about this number due to the many initiatives on campus
and efforts by ECU faculty and staff to support ECU students.
Each of us plays a huge role in retaining students and supporting them through
graduation. Even a single interaction can make a difference in a student’s life.
Thank you so much for all that you do!

UNC-General Administration has defined a common census day for the counting
of enrolled degree-credit students, full-time equivalent students, and student
credit hours for purposes of reporting and budgeting. For regular term
instruction, the census date is the 10th class day of the term. On this day, each
UNC university “freezes” the snapshot of students at the end of the day.
September 7th is census day at ECU for fall 2010. Even though we are freezing
the numbers on this date, we will not know our official retention rate until
confirmed by GA (typically sometime in January). ECU’s office of Institutional
Planning, Assessment and Research will release the official report and this
information will be relayed to you.
...to make a difference in a student’s life.
When will we know what our 2009
cohort retention number is?
