MATARA- training for European Jewish Youth Leaders - matara@rothschildfoundation.eu
Matara 2015 during Limmud UK Conference
Friday 25th
December 2015 – Thursday 31st
December 2015
For the fifth year, the Rothschild Foundation (Hanadiv) Europe, in partnership with Limmud, is
delighted to welcome applications to participate in MATARA.
Up to 20 young educators and community activists are sponsored to participate in a specialised
professional development programme at the Limmud Conference in the UK. Led by Sonja Vilicic and
Steve Israel, Matara is designed to enhance Jewish knowledge, discuss contemporary issues in
Jewish society and offer an insight into relevant aspects of informal education, theory and practice.
ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
Matara is a self-contained training programme
where participants work as a group to gain
knowledge and skills essential to educators and
educationally-oriented activists within their
Jewish community.
Matara begins with a specially designed Shabbat
programme, allowing free time to enjoy Shabbat
within the context of the larger Limmud
Conference. From Sunday to Thursday, the group
attends morning and afternoon Matara sessions
and the rest of the time, they are encouraged to
choose from any of the general Limmud lectures and activities. In addition, there are social evening
programmes for the group.
The goals of the programme are:
 To provide Jewish-themed learning, community analysis and insights into informal educational
practice and theory for youth and student leaders employed or active in centres of Jewish life
across Europe.
 To give participants an opportunity to network and be part of the largest conference of Jewish
learning and culture in Europe.
 To enhance the skills of participants to develop Jewish programming upon their return to their
communities enriched by the Matara experience.
Matara sessions introduce contemporary issues facing the Jewish world today and explore the past
and present history of Jewish communities. Other sessions present a comprehensive overview of
Jewish text and history. Special focus will be given this year to informal education theory and
practice. At all other times participants are encouraged to join in all the other opportunities offered
by the Limmud Conference. See www.limmud.org/conference for more details.
