Philippe Desmaison of SUSE introduced their strategies for open cloud computing. SUSE has 20 years of experience in enterprise computing and aims to bring that experience to the cloud space. Their strategy involves using SUSE Linux Enterprise Server to provide an enterprise-ready private cloud reference platform based on OpenStack. This allows for image creation, testing, provisioning, deployment, management and monitoring in a cloud computing environment.

The main way to “go cloud” has proved to be, for security and economic reasons, hybrid : mixing private with public. Moving to Cloud PaaS is then requires to: manage the lifecycle of applications over different cloud providers; mask the heterogeneity; automate the deployment whatever the application technology and execution environment are, etc. This is what tackles OpenCloudware, which aims at enabling flexible multi-cloud applications thanks to a full automated think-build-run chain.
In the presentation we present a sample from OpenCloudware results demonstrating in particular a complete mechanism, comprising: application selection, deployment, benchmarking. OpenCloudware supports many IaaS infrasctructures, including OpenStack (via OW2stack). OpenCloudware is supported by the French administration through its IT support program "Fond National pour la Société Numérique".

Public procurement of open source software: some lessons learned in the Netherlands The Netherlands was the first EU country to formulate formal policies on the promotion of open standards and open source software within its government in fall 2007. Part of that policy was mandating certain open standards in public procurement and an explicit position regarding a level playing field for open source software in public procurement. In order to facilitate this, a programme group was appointed. One aspect of the programme (called Netherlands open in Connection), which is about to end, is the ongoing monitoring of calls for tenders in order to gauge compliance with this policy.
