Women in Indonesian society traditionally played important roles both in the home and contributing financially through work outside the home. This gave women significant economic power and decision-making authority over family finances, which sometimes conflicted with traditional Islamic ideals of male head of household. However, poorer women working in factories often faced exploitation and unsafe conditions as a means of control. While marriages are still often arranged, younger generations are increasingly influenced by Western ideas of marrying for love.
