INTRODUCING: Robin Joynson
Within the music scene of the Cardiff area, acoustic singer-songwriters are a
dime a dozen. It is only with the most character and lyrical ingenuity that the
most talented stand out, and this is precisely what Robin Joynson employs in
his songwriting to bring new appeal to this genre of music. This is not the
average have-a-go musician you'd find at your local open mic.
Listening to his latest release, entitled 'Failure', the initial outstanding trait of
his music is his voice. Filled to the brim with humour, Joynson's style is
theatrical and jocose, with some similarity to the Canadian comedy trio Corky
and the Juice Pigs. Perhaps it would be more appropriate to compare him to
artists like Barenaked Ladies, as the themes of his compositions tend to
connect more to listener's lives. With lamentable tales of unrequited love, laced
with wit and comedic consolation, these songs bring up one's spirits. These
tales of failure are at the heart of his new album, released on the indie label
Southern Summer Records.
In terms of instrumentation, the plentiful use of cheerful glockenspiel and
chugging open chords offer an interesting blend of punk simplicity and a DIY
ethos, with sounds reminiscent of youthful sing-alongs. Combining this with his
at times venomously biting and waspishly honest lyrics, these songs really are
something you don't see coming.
If one ever gets the chance to get to see Robin play live or to spend any time
with him at all, you will immediately notice how his musical presence differs
substantially from everything else about him. In person, he is very humble and
quiet, but even just from his songs you can see how his stage persona must be
engaging and entertaining. His music would fit well supporting fellow Cardiff
based band Los Campesinos!. In any case, he is bound for great things.
Tracks to check out include the lead single 'Oh No!' and one of his earlier songs
'Silvia' (both the original demo and the new recording).
