  Dr.	
  Alison	
  Vaughan.	
  
	
  
Alison	
  will	
  be	
  working	
  as	
  an	
  Extension	
  Specialist	
  	
  -­‐	
  
helping	
  you	
  directly	
  with	
  on-­‐farm	
  consulting	
  and	
  
indirectly	
  with	
  Agwest’s	
  in-­‐house	
  research.	
  
	
  
Alison	
  originally	
  hails	
  from	
  the	
  Isle	
  of	
  Skye,	
  Scotland,	
  where	
  she	
  grew	
  up	
  working	
  with	
  the	
  
family’s	
  herd	
  of	
  hill	
  sheep,	
  young	
  horses	
  and	
  highland	
  cattle.	
  She	
  first	
  came	
  to	
  Canada	
  to	
  
complete	
  a	
  5-­‐month	
  project	
  examining	
  cross	
  sucking	
  in	
  dairy	
  calves	
  at	
  the	
  UBC	
  Dairy	
  Education	
  
and	
  Research	
  Centre,	
  as	
  part	
  of	
  her	
  MSc	
  degree	
  with	
  the	
  University	
  of	
  Edinburgh.	
  Alison	
  then	
  
moved	
  to	
  the	
  University	
  of	
  Saskatchewan	
  to	
  pursue	
  a	
  PhD,	
  which	
  explored	
  practical	
  
applications	
  for	
  the	
  learning	
  abilities	
  of	
  cattle.	
  After	
  defending	
  her	
  PhD	
  in	
  December	
  2014,	
  
Alison	
  spent	
  the	
  following	
  two	
  years	
  as	
  a	
  post	
  doctoral	
  researcher	
  with	
  UBC’s	
  Animal	
  Welfare	
  
Program,	
  where	
  her	
  research	
  focussed	
  on	
  exploring	
  calves’	
  learning	
  and	
  using	
  data	
  from	
  a	
  
cross-­‐Canada	
  cluster	
  project	
  to	
  identify	
  factors	
  associated	
  with	
  cleanliness	
  and	
  cow	
  comfort.	
  
Alison’s	
  main	
  research	
  interests	
  include	
  benchmarking,	
  cow	
  comfort	
  and	
  calf	
  management.	
  
Within	
  her	
  role	
  at	
  Agwest	
  Veterinary	
  Group,	
  Alison	
  will	
  be	
  providing	
  benchmarking	
  services	
  
and	
  finding	
  management	
  solutions	
  to	
  help	
  your	
  cows	
  achieve	
  their	
  potential.	
  Outside	
  of	
  her	
  
work	
  with	
  Agwest	
  she	
  spends	
  her	
  time	
  rock	
  climbing	
  and	
  hiking	
  in	
  the	
  Fraser	
  Valley	
  and	
  
training	
  dogs	
  with	
  behavioural	
  problems.	
  
	
  
Agwest	
  continues	
  to	
  be	
  a	
  collaborative	
  group	
  
of	
  professionals	
  with	
  the	
  knowledge,	
  
experience,	
  expertise,	
  and	
  resources	
  to	
  
effectively	
  assist	
  our	
  clients	
  with

Introducing-Alison-Vaughan

  • 1.     Dr.  Alison  Vaughan   Agwest  is  pleased  to  announce  the  latest  addition   to  our  dairy  team  –  Dr.  Alison  Vaughan.     Alison  will  be  working  as  an  Extension  Specialist    -­‐   helping  you  directly  with  on-­‐farm  consulting  and   indirectly  with  Agwest’s  in-­‐house  research.     Alison  originally  hails  from  the  Isle  of  Skye,  Scotland,  where  she  grew  up  working  with  the   family’s  herd  of  hill  sheep,  young  horses  and  highland  cattle.  She  first  came  to  Canada  to   complete  a  5-­‐month  project  examining  cross  sucking  in  dairy  calves  at  the  UBC  Dairy  Education   and  Research  Centre,  as  part  of  her  MSc  degree  with  the  University  of  Edinburgh.  Alison  then   moved  to  the  University  of  Saskatchewan  to  pursue  a  PhD,  which  explored  practical   applications  for  the  learning  abilities  of  cattle.  After  defending  her  PhD  in  December  2014,   Alison  spent  the  following  two  years  as  a  post  doctoral  researcher  with  UBC’s  Animal  Welfare   Program,  where  her  research  focussed  on  exploring  calves’  learning  and  using  data  from  a   cross-­‐Canada  cluster  project  to  identify  factors  associated  with  cleanliness  and  cow  comfort.   Alison’s  main  research  interests  include  benchmarking,  cow  comfort  and  calf  management.   Within  her  role  at  Agwest  Veterinary  Group,  Alison  will  be  providing  benchmarking  services   and  finding  management  solutions  to  help  your  cows  achieve  their  potential.  Outside  of  her   work  with  Agwest  she  spends  her  time  rock  climbing  and  hiking  in  the  Fraser  Valley  and   training  dogs  with  behavioural  problems.     Agwest  continues  to  be  a  collaborative  group   of  professionals  with  the  knowledge,   experience,  expertise,  and  resources  to   effectively  assist  our  clients  with  all  aspects  of   their  farms.   _______________________________________________________   Agwest  Veterinary  Group   5814  Riverside  Street,  Abbotsford,  BC   604.826.5089   www.agwestdairy.vet   www.facebook.com/AgwestDairy
