Introduction to Data Acquisition
What Is Mechatronics?
Mechatronics is a methodology used for the optimal design of
electromechanical products. A methodology is a collection of practices,
procedures, and rules used by those who work in a particular branch of
knowledge or discipline.
What is DAQ?
➢Data Acquisition is the process by which physical phenomena from
the real world are transformed into electrical signals that are
measured and converted into a digital format for processing, analysis,
and storage by a computer.
➢DAS or DAQ typically measures an electrical or physical
phenomenon such as voltage, current, temperature, pressure, or sound
and converts the analog waveforms into digital values for processing
and analysis.
What is DAQ? (Cont.)
➢Data acquisition systems interface between the real world of
physical parameters, which are analog and the artificial world of
digital computation and control.
➢ Purpose of any data acquisition system is to gather useful
measurement data for monitoring and control.
Why We Need Data Acquisition System ?
➢Reduced costs
➢Higher measuring accuracy
➢Quick measurement
➢Fast transmission of data over large distances
➢Data collected in a computer compatible form
DAQ Components
➢Sensors and transducers
➢Field wiring
➢Signal conditioning
➢Data acquisition hardware
➢PC (operating system)
➢Data acquisition software

Sensors and Transducers:
 Transducers and sensors provide the actual interface between the real
world and the data acquisition system by converting physical phenomena
to electrical signals.
 Examples:
• - Thermocouples, resistive temperature detectors (RTDs), thermistors, and
IC sensors convert temperature into an analog signal.
• Flow meters produce digital pulse trains whose frequency depends on the
speed of flow.
Field wiring and communications cabling
 Field wiring represents the physical connection from the transducers and
sensors to the signal conditioning hardware and/or data acquisition
hardware.
 Communications cabling is the communications interface used for long
Distance linking between sensors and DAQ hardware examples(RS-232 or
RS-485)
Field wiring and communications cabling (con.)
 Since field wiring and communications cabling often physically represents
the largest component of the total system, it is most susceptible to the
effects of external noise.
 We concern about choosing the appropriate communication interface,
earthing and shielding of field wires.
Signal conditioning
 Signal conditioning is used to convert electrical signals
generated by transducers to a form acceptable to the data
acquisition hardware.
The principal tasks performed by signal conditioning are:
 Filtering
 Amplification
 Linearization
 Isolation
 Excitation
