About Colorectal Cancer
• The colon is the part of the digestive system
where waste material is formed.
• Cancer cells of the colon and rectum can
invade and damage nearby tissues and organs.
This is known as locally advanced disease.
• Cancer cells can also break away and spread to
other parts of the body such as the liver and lungs.
This is known as metastatic disease.

About SIR-Spheres® microspheres
• SIR-Spheres microspheres are a medical device
used in a procedure called Selective Internal
Radiation Therapy (SIRT).
• The microspheres are extremely small resin
beads (about one-third the diameter of a strand of
hair) which contain radioactive yttrium 90 (Y90).
• The radioactive microspheres are injected into the main artery that supplies
liver tumors and flow to the small blood vessels surrounding the tumor where
they lodge. Radioactivity is delivered directly to the tumor cells in order to
destroy them leaving healthy liver cells unharmed.

How SIR-Spheres® microspheres Work
• Microspheres are injected into the hepatic
artery that supplies blood to the liver tumors.
• Once the catheter is in position, the doctor
releases millions of tiny spheres directly to the
tumor site.
• The SIR-Spheres microspheres become
trapped in the blood vessels around tumors
and give off enough radiation to kill the
tumors, while the surrounding healthy liver
tissue remains unaffected.
• The microspheres only stay radioactive for a limited time. After two weeks only
3% of the initial radiation remains, and after one month no radiation remains.

• Several days before SIRT, patients will go
through a series of tests, including angiograms,
to make sure they are suitable for SIRT.
• On the day of treatment the patient will receive
SIRT after the doctor has checked the results
from the previous tests.
Patient Preparation

• Once the catheter placement is
confirmed, the SIR-Spheres microspheres
can be administered. This portion of the
procedure takes about 15-20 minutes. The
entire procedure lasts approximately 1 hour
from beginning to end.
• After the microspheres have been
delivered, the catheter is removed and the
patient will be monitored for a few hours.
Most patients can go home within 4-6 hours.

Are Administered

Side Effects of
Selective Internal Radiation Therapy
• Side effects of SIRT are usually mild. Patients may
experience abdominal pain or nausea for 1-2 days.
• They also may have a raised temperature,
chills or a feeling of pressure in the abdomen.
• These side effects are usually gone in a few days.
Tiredness and appetite loss are the most common
side effects and can last longer.
• Patients should contact their doctor immediately
if they feel things are not right.

Important Safety Information
• Most side effects following a Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT)
procedure are minor, but a small number can be serious. Every patient is
different in how he or she reacts to a treatment.
• Many patients experience abdominal pain or tightness in their
abdomen, nausea and loss of appetite which normally subsides within a
week.
Patients also develop a mild fever that may last for up to a week, and
fatigue which may last for several weeks.
• In rare instances, a small number of microspheres may reach other
organs in the body in error, such as the gallbladder, stomach, intestine,
lung, or pancreas. If the microspheres reach these organs, they may
cause inflammation or ulceration. These complications are rare, but if
they do occur they may require additional medical treatment.
